Hi there Andrea, just stumbled across your channel. I've been a Linux user for a while now, but I just wanted to say how refreshing it is to see someone like yourself involved in the community. I feel that Linux desktops are often thought of as machines only used by young guys in computer science, so it's fantastic to see someone like you breaking that mould :) Brilliant video as well, wishing you all the best

I love the simplicity of Nautilus, its design is very consistent overall.

I find Nautilus difficult to work with as it doesn't have the basic functions that Nemo and other file managers have. That's why I use Nemo when I am on Gnome.

Simplified to the point of being borderline unusable.

I also prefer Nautilus. Thanks for the tips! Greetings from Brazil ❤

My favorite is actually Caja. Because I like that you can change the folder background. Nemo is better on Gnome because it draws the desktop icons without the need for Gnome Extensions. Where as Nautilus and Caja cannot. Even on Mate Caja depends on Mate Tweak Or Mint Desktop Manager if on Linux Mint to sow the desktop icons. Nemo can do this on it's own. Nautilus is too stripped down and does not have the features needed to do a lot of things as other file managers do. I cannot copy or paste anything in Nautilus because I cannot find the tool buttons.

Nemo and Nautilus - - I like it. Jules Verne right. It's such a relief to see someone with the same handwriting as mine doing KZbin creator videos. 👏👏👏

I enjoyed watching. I'm using Nemo but only because I'm using Linux Mint Cinnamon (on desktop) and Linux Mint Debian Edition (on laptop). I think Nemo on Mint is great.

I switched from Win10 to Linux Mint about 3 years ago and to work with Nemo was like love on the first sight for me. It offers so much usability that I miss every single day when I have to deal with the explorer on Win10 on my PC at work...

Oh really? Although there were things I didn't like about Windows 8 ,including the ribbon in Windows Explorer. I found that I could use it and was able to do everything I needed to. There was still copy and paste buttons and you could view everything. With Nautilus you cannot view your program files in /usr/share/applications or open them except on the desktop. No copy and paste buttons. With most other file managers you can and they have a toolbar. Nemo and Caja have the toolbar at the top and so does Dolphin,Thunar and PCmanFM. They are a lot like Windows Explorer in that way. So most Windows users are familiar with them. You can disable the ribbon in Windows Explorer but I think Microsoft may have removed the ribbon in Windows 11. I am not sure as I don't use Windows 11.

@@AndreaBorman Indeed its more the functions of having tabs or splitting the screen (by pressing F3) that makes nemo more functional for me. With the Windows explorer I have to open every folder in its own window or I have to install a third party software that implements this functions more or less good but in my opinion not as good as I'm used to it when using nemo.

@@Interplexx When I was on Windows I used to disable the ribbon in Windows 8 Explorer with Ribbon Disabler. Which make the Explorer toolbar look like the Windows 7 Explorer. I am sure this will work in Windows 10 though I have never used 10. I was still able to open files with the ribbon but like a lot of people I never liked it. The ribbon just didn't look very nice and it looks quite out of place on a file manager. But then there is a lot of things wrong with Windows 8 and 10 as well as 11. No proper start menu is one thing and you cannot find anything. Windows 7 was much better but Microsoft changed all that with Windows 8 for the worse.

I have no issues with any file manager, be nemo, dolphin, thunar, my only problem is with nautilus i think its really bad, but is very visually appealing since its very minimalistic, but today i use dolphin since I'm on KDE. But answering your question between the 3, I'm with Nemo.

Nautilus is not very user friendly because many of the features that used to be there have been removed. The old version of Nautilus which you can see in 26.11 of the video used to come with all of the features that Caja now has. Caja is based on Nautilus 2 so has all of the old features that Nautilus used to have. I don't know why they removed them in Nautilus.

@@AndreaBorman I Maybe think this all has to do with the UX design decisions from GNOME team, they simplified nautilus too much so people wont bother with too much settings, just the strict necessary for all people to know all features from the start, but i think they took out alot of features which made it a worse file manager compared to the others, but on the counterpart, some people say that Dolphin is too much complicated (like windows), which has too much settings and people become confused and blinded by having so much options and start to dislike dolphin because of that, this UX decision by GNOME follow the same pattern of decisions that apple do with their MacOS system, and people who aren't too much versed into technology likes them more than windows and linux just because of these UX decisions, thats why i think they intentionally took it off these features to not confuse or not complicate support for nautilus and focus on other things.

@@DavidCoutinhoCG Dolphin has all of the functions you need and it's a good file manager. Nautilus does not as the toolbar at the top is on the side. Though that is not a bad thing in itself as you can still see the settings. The problem is it's difficult to copy and paste as you see in the video I could find the copy or paste link. Other file managers have this and also I could not see the program files in the applications folder in Nautilus. Because it would not display them. This is not a problem on other file managers. Yet when you look at the old version of Nautilus in Ubuntu 10 which was Nautilus 2 it had everything. I think it was the wrong decision to remove those features.
@codebraker126 ай бұрын
For me the only really capable file manager is Dolphin from KDE, the other ones lack of so many features.
@AndreaBorman6 ай бұрын
Yeah Dolphin is good but I am not sure if it can be run on Gnome or other desktops. Since it's meant for KDE. What I like about Caja is that you can change the folder backgrounds. Nautilus used to have this but they removed that and many other features in the later versions.

@@AndreaBormanyou can run dolphin on non-KDE desktops. It just sometimes doesn't look exactly right as it can't figure out what theme to use in some circumstances
@AndreaBorman6 ай бұрын
@@novafurry That's good to know. Though it might pull in some things from the KDE desktop but I am not sure about this. As I have never tried to run Dolphin anywhere else except on KDE. I know that the LXQT version of PCMan FM QT pulls in the LXQT desktop but the LXDE version PCManFm does not. Nemo Caja and Nautilus can be run on other desktops alongside the default file manager of that desktop. None of those pull in the desktop environment.
