We have a short week coming off of Christmas break since we take Thomas' birthday off. Lots of fun with crafts and games and another failed trip to the Museum. (We use ACE curriculum and our children are in 9th, 7th, 6th, 4th, 2nd and Kindergarten, plus two little ones!)

Really liking how the new longer table is working in the space, and clearing space in the kitchen. When I saw it in the Skip Bo video, I didn't realise it had replaced both previous tables. We have a nice long table in our library and I love that we can have 4 different activities on the go at the same time; ours is separate from our dining table so we can even leave a puzzle out.

It's been such a blessing! This is a temporary table Tom made from plywood. We're going to use it for a month or so and then trim the top to be narrower. After we live with it that way for a month or so, we're going to buy a nice butcher block table top in the size we preferred and build our "real" new table. We don't want to spend the money on the top until we're sure we like the size.

I just adore Grandma Fern. She is so wise and sweet, and funny too! As soon as you all pulled up to the museum and said it was closed I was like "NOT AGAIN!" I remember the last time, lol!

I'm jealous of how focus your kids are. I would be so distracted by the little ones and the tv and all the talking. I wouldn't be able to do my work. I really like your way of homeschooling, they seem to enjoy school and get one on one help unlike in classes of 16 or so kids. I have no kids and don't have plans for kids anytime soon but I'm really liking the idea of homeschooling, especially because I have dyslexia and my future kids (if genetic) will most likely have it also. I kinda wish I was homeschooled I feel like I could have gone further and learned more than just cramming for a test than forgetting everything to cram for the next test. Very lovely family and all the kids seem so happy, just subscribed (:

There's a book on heliotherapy and how in the old days sunlight and cool air were used to treat all sorts of ailments. We've purposely tried to under-dress for short times outside and it's amazing how much you change to withstand the weather!

I made the dividers out of those cardboard things that are meant for science projects. I cut them in half to make two dividers. The inside was white already; I covered it with clear contact paper to make a surface that wouldn't get torn when we taped things on and took them off. I painted the backs with acrylic paint. This is the board I used: www.amazon.com/Elmers-730205-Project-Display-Tri-Fold/dp/B002N77U6U/ref=sr_1_7?s=office-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1484797226&sr=1-7&keywords=science+project+board

Do you remember where you got Claudia's little table hang high chair? I love how simple it is, but to be honest always makes me nervous. I'm sure it's secure though, just scary if you aren't use to it!

I was a little nervous myself at first, but it's very sturdy. Sophia has even sat in it without seeming at all worrisome. Here's a link to the one I have: www.amazon.com/Mountain-Buggy-Clip-Highchair-Flint/dp/B00BMNW9R6/ref=sr_1_5_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1484723133&sr=8-5&keywords=hanging%2Bhigh%2Bchair&th=1

With all your little kids checking out lots of library books do you have trouble keeping track of them? What's your system for not losing them? Love your channel and your cute family by the way!!!
@TheMillsFamilyVlog
@TheMillsFamilyVlog 7 жыл бұрын
We have a picture rail shelf on the wall behind the couch for all the library books and they're _supposed_ to stay on the couch to read them. It doesn't always work that way, but it's helped immensely with keeping track. My older boys keep their books on the shelves in their beds because they're responsible enough to keep track of them.

I'm curious what the two colors represent on your flags. To be clear, I did ACE for grades 7-12 and also taught in a school that used it, so I totally understand the flag system. I'm just asking what specifically you have your kids use each color for.

Green is for fast things like needing an initial to take a self test or needing to recite a verse. Yellow is for slow things like needing to read a story to me, needing me to score a writing assignment, needing help with math problems or something like that. The green is kind of like the monitor flag and the yellow more like the supervisor flag.

What are your thoughts on the HS technique, unschooling?
@TheMillsFamilyVlog
@TheMillsFamilyVlog 7 жыл бұрын
I think it fits very well with some people's personalities and families. There was an interesting study done that showed that whether a family was very structured, casual or practiced "unschooling", the kids did basically the same on standardized tests.

What time do the kids go to bed?
@TheMillsFamilyVlog
@TheMillsFamilyVlog 7 жыл бұрын
If they are on "E" privilege (our highest privilege level) it's 9:00. Everyone else goes to bed at 8:00. In the summer it's an hour later for everyone. Since Thomas started high school he doesn't have a bed time anymore, but there are consequences if he's not up and ready when we open our store in the morning.

It's been great! We've used them in the past (or something similar) and I missed to structure they give to the day. Aside from cutting down distractions, it makes it very clear when it's school time and when it's not.

how does the flag system work
@TheMillsFamilyVlog
@TheMillsFamilyVlog 7 жыл бұрын
The green flag is for fast things like needing an initial to take a self test or needing to recite a verse. Yellow is for slow things like needing to read a story to me, needing me to score a writing assignment, needing help with math problems or something like that. That way I can assess ahead of time if I have time at a particular moment to help them with what they need. If they can't go on without me, they get out another subject to work on while they wait.
