It is finally Day 1 of Gemma's new job! She passed the interview process :P and today was assessment day to see where she is so we have a baseline to go forward and improve.
The day was a bit rough, the wing was too big and the location was wrong, but there were still some valuable lessons to be learnt.
Tune in tomorrow for more :)

This is SUPER helpful. I'm on day 2 of trying to learn this on an ancient (1998) wing, and it is easy to get discouraged. But seeing that you weren't that great on your first time out sure helps, because I know how much better you get! Of course, having a pro right next to you sure helps too!

Your videos helped me so much. I'm actually on my way to Morningside Flight Park right now in southern New Hampshire, United States. Today will be my 4th day of PPG training and we'll be kiting with a motor on. I got a 11 or 12 flights in from the 150' launch and it is just the most amazing feeling. Cheers and thank you!

Are you guys under the influence of the rotor from that plateau on the back? Or is it far away enough that the air gets laminar again??

Loved the video, I an training on a BGD seed, I am having a hard time with the cross contol, and turning my body forward! Any tips? I guess just practice, look forward to watching and learning. Go Gemma.

Cheers Peter, love the Seed to practice with and play around but I find that smaller wings might be twitchier and move a lot faster than a big wing. For tips I would agree with you that it's just practice and more practice until you develop the muscle memory. It's nice to know that some people might be doing their Groundhandling with us and do keep us updated on how it goes if you manage to get out and play!

Thanks will do, I am OK facing the wing, it does move about and I am in a very turbulent area, I have a hard time committing to the turn with confidence and walking or running forward! Will keep at it and when success is reached I may send the video, cheers.
@AndreBandarra1
@AndreBandarra1 6 жыл бұрын
That would be awesome Peter. Yes I noticed for myself when I was learning and Gemma too that GHing in turbulent wind at the very beginning does more harm than good because its hard to know which reactions of the wing are your inputs and which are just turbulence. If you get the chance to practice somewhere with laminar flow (or close) you'll get a lot more experience out of an hour's groundhandling. Best of luck and keep at it!

Great series! Look forward to the learning & tips through the video. A suggestion: May be, at the end of each video, you could just point out 1 or 2 instances - where a new pilot can learn - "how to avert a particular situation" For. e.g. #1 When the wing goes sideways at 6:18 in the video, we can turn our body at our waist towards the falling side - inducing weight shift towards the higher-side and walk in-to-the wind and sightly towards the side touching ground, to get the wing back up overhead.

Thanks a lot for the encouragement, really helps! Yeah that makes sense and we try to do a little bit of that so we'll keep the suggestion in mind the the future!

Thank you. Definitely won't fly, just want to work on my mechanics. Would like to find a small C wing, like you guys use. BTW, i live in Anchorage, Alaska
@AndreBandarra1
@AndreBandarra1 5 жыл бұрын
We use a BGD Seed, not a C wing (wouldn't recommend those). Yeah you can try an old small EN-A or B. Maybe an speedwing could work too? I know ozone and U-turn also do a groundhandling only wings but they are harder to find used and cheap

Andre. Where can one go to shop for used gear? I have found a used BGD seed for $940.00 US dollars, but a new one isn't that much more

I would try ebay, craigslist/gumtree, skyads.aero, paragliding forum and always look at the schools or dealers closest to you as they some times have old gear or can at least advise you on where to get some. hope it helps

Hey, the series is a great idea, I'm curious about the progress! Good point with the wing size as well, I thought it would be a little large too. I've build Gliderbase.com and there's a "takeoff weight filter" to help you find the right wing size. If you want to check it out, I'd love to know whether that helps you.

Andre please teach Gemma the Mitsos launch method. I'd hate to see her injure herself as she's clearly not in command.
@AndreBandarra1

If I thought she was in danger I would have intervened and picked up the wing don't worry. There's a difference between teaching and learning. Doesn't matter how good you are at teaching (I'm not great by the way) the person still has to take their time to learn their own way in a safe environment and invariably, make mistakes. We've all been there.

advice: If you care about your equipment don't do groundhandling on salty/sandy beaches :)

true, but if sandy beaches is all you have, it's better to wreck your equipment than to wreck yourself for lack of training :P

Yeah sand is bad, but equipment is just stuff, skill development is king, and soft sand is real nice to practice on.
