I am 65 My wife is 56. Her mother, (my mother in law ) is 86 years old, widowed, lives alone in her own small home in North Wales. She is not wealthy. She is not even well off. She is very old fashioned,and always has been. She still uses a small, old fashioned tv with 4 channels and a roof aerial. She still uses only a landline telephone. She has NEVER owned a mobile phone, neither has she ever had internet access. I have always had these things and even I find it confusing going onto government websites, configuring new passwords for access etc just to access pension information or applying for a passport. There is no way on earth she would even attempt to, even for the fuel allowance… it’s totally alien to her ! How many MILLIONS of older pensioners like her are there out there, who will freeze this winter because they are not tech savvy ?😮

And that’s AFTER you get to the right place… Getting to that right place takes hours of hair pulling security screens, robot tests, setting up accounts, confirming passwords with texts or emails blah blah Believe me, that was me applying for a new passport ! “ your session has expired” “confirm your password” “test you are not a bot” “ your password is not secure enough” This woman doesn’t have internet, never has. So obviously, she doesn’t have an email address. She doesn’t even have ( or want) a mobile phone, so she obviously has never received or sent a text message , or wants to ! So you see, the thought of “just jumping online and applying” is like asking her to jump on the moon ! So yes, she really is that ignorant…. My Parents are 80. They are just above the pension credit. What people dont realise, not only the winter fuel payment removed, but the price cap. The winter fuel payment of £300 plus the rise, an extra £300 on top. I`m very angry! They sat under blankets last year alone. They wont be doing this this year. Just bought half a ton of smokeless fuel. They can come here. F labour! Ill pump some carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and F net zero because Labour made gas too expensive to heat a house and I`m not letting my parents get hypothermia.
