I'm a 40 year old man and scared of balloons popping too. I'm not as bad as Bert but I do keep my distance from them if I'm in the same room with them. And unlike Bert, I remember when I developed my fear of them. I was at my first lock-in when I was 4 years old and they had us play a game where you tied a balloon to your ankle and you had to run around and pop other people's balloons. It was in a gym and very loud because of the acoustics, combined with older, bigger kids chasing after me and stomping near me feet. Ever since then, I kept my distance from balloons.
