I’m a receptionist at a veterinary clinic and of course listen to and trust your doctor, but try not to lose all hope. I’ve seen dogs live with late stage kidney disease for years on medication, special diet, and extra vet visits. Sending all my love to you guys, sometimes anticipating the loss of a pet can destroy you (I’ve been there). Try not to let it take over your life and just enjoy the time you have with him. He’s so lucky to have you guys as his family ❤

I had a dog who had kidney failure too, we had her on a drip for over a week and when we got her home we were just super strict with her diet and we got another healthy 5 years with her ❤ stay positive guys, my dog was honestly on her way out it’s all about how you can manage. 100%. When my dog died, they put her down in our home, on her favorite chair and I kept telling her ‘we did it. We did all we were supposed to do. You checked off all the dog boxes, you chased the mailman, you played on the beach, you traveled, you cuddled me when I was sad, you never ran away or got hurt and so so much more and I checked off all the owner boxes. We have nothing left to do. You did it all so it’s time to rest now’ and she died the second I told her that. Ethan, I’m sure you guys are going to have more time with Shredder but just know when the time comes, focus on all the good things you did together. That ending hit so hard for me. My cat also had advanced kidney failure, and we had to put him down shortly after because we couldn't afford the treatments that would've prolonged his life. He was an older cat about 15 and I grew up with him. It still kills me to this day that we couldn't afford to do the treatments for it, seeing his health decline so quickly was so heartbreaking. Shredder is so so lucky to have such loving and caring parents. Sending so much love to you guys.

Kidney failure can be so sneaky and fast. The veterinarian I worked with didn’t see any early signs with her dog . She had access to all the IV fluids, medications, foods, bloodwork, but she passed within weeks of any symptoms. In my experience in vet med, showing love to our pets is more important than extending their lives. I’m sure you gave your kitty the life he deserved ❤

Lost my 14 year old kitty to kidney failure as well, she was fine the week before and then suddenly we saw her eye leak but weren't sure what was happening the next day she was practically lifeless. It was so sudden and the vet said there was basically nothing we could do even if we had the money it most likely wouldn't help her so we had to put her down that day. It was so hard. Dont feel bad, even if you could afford it that recovery can be so difficult, especially for an older animal. sometimes its more humane to just let them go as peacefully as possible

I wanted to share something that may not relate but could bring some kind of reassurance. Before i was born my parents adopted a cat called Ben. However, Ben sadly passed before i had the chance of meeting him, to create memories with. Although I could not create my own memories, my family would tell me of their own. Funny little things he did and stories of how kind he was to my brother. They would tell me how he would steal the ham from my Dad's sandwiches before he left for work and how he laid at the end of my brother when he was baby to protect him. It was hard knowing I couldn't meet him for myself, but the stories I was told made me feel like I knew him. So, pass down all the memories you have, little or small things Shredder did. Even if you think Teddy will not remember, I can assure you, just from how you light up when you talk about him, he will. ❤️

Oh man, I just tuned in and it was at the end of the episode. I lost my 17year old dog in September to cancer. Seeing your pets health decline is an extremely heartbreaking thing to go through so ik how you're feeling rn, he was also a tiny dog like Shredder. Listening to the end while driving in the car with my 15 year old dog is truly heartbreaking. My dogs are my everything and it is validating to hear the love and compassion that they have for their dog. It is too normalized how dogs and pets in general are materialized and serve more as props to people which is so frustrating. While Ethans emotions also resonated with me, since my dog was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder which will soon take her life, this moment reminded me of the incredible times I had with my dog. I have had the honor to be with my best friend for over 13 years and going and while I will be devastated when she is gone, I also have so many incredibly memories with the one that has been there for me through it all.

what ethan said about not wanting to look good in order to not receive attention is so relatable for me. every time i’ve received attention from men, i’ve felt uncomfortable and anxious. some of them were really respectful and sweet, and some of them were creepy and gross. nonetheless i’ve felt somewhat uncomfortable every time. i put significantly less effort into my appearance. i wear baggy clothes, cut my hair short, and wear less makeup now in order to try to make myself look less attractive, so that i’m not put in an uncomfortable situation where i’m receiving unwanted attention and potentially making the other person feel bad for rejecting them, which i obviously do every time as i’m in a monogamous relationship. i do experience a lot of anxiety especially surrounding my relationship, i think this may potentially be an anxiety issue for ethan as well

My heart goes out to Ethan and Hila. The day before flying home for Christmas, my mom called about our younger cat and was rushing her to the ER vet bc she was very sick out of nowhere, literally like a switch flipped. Within a few hours we had to put her down bc she had serious lack of motor control and had a tumor in her head that couldn't be helped. We found out our 4 year old kitty was likely much older than the shelter said she was, and that what happened was basically unavoidable. It's so fucking hard to go through and to see your little family member be in so much pain and fear. I really hope Shredder pulls through, or is able to spend some comfortable time at home with them before he goes💕so so sorrry for them all

My cat is senior and her health has been declining a bit, which makes me cry very often, although it doesn’t seem serious yet. But I can’t imagine my life without her, I got her when I was 18 and moved out of my parents house, she’s the reason I’m here today, been suffering from chronic depression and at my lowest I knew I couldn’t leave her. Our one remaining dog out of 2 is a senior Chihuahua who's gonna be 16 this October and every once in a while I just worry she's gonna die without me being home because I work in the city and it makes me so sad. When I video chat with my mom I always ask to see our senior girl too. Taking care of pets is a lovely experience but knowing you'll most likely inevitably outlive them is awful 😢

I got my cat when I was 11 and I’m 26 now, and we just took her to the vet today due to her drooling a lot and they said she has a growth on her jaw, which we were given antibiotics for, but they said if the antibiotics don’t work we’ll just have to let her live her life until it starts to affect her quality of life. It’s so sad when an animal that’s been with you more than half your life gets sick, (or any animal gets sick) and sometimes there isn’t anything that can be done expect make them comfortable. I wish they lived forever.

My Yorkie passed last year from kidney disease as well so this really hit home for me. The doctors gave us the same option for at home care but my little guy was already 16. If he was as young as Shredder, I would do anything in my power to make more memories with him, even for just a year so you guys are absolutely doing the right thing. Im so incredibly sorry and it pains me to see you & Hila like this. Shredder will live on through stories and photos/ videos shared with Theodore once he's older so please don't let that idea upset you too much. My Yorkie was my best friend as well and as unfathomable as it may seem, the thought of loosing a dog is somehow more upsetting than the reality. Humans are resilient and although you will miss him, it will always feel like he's around in some way. Saying as many prayers as I can that you guys can have as much time as possible with him
