Ah, not to bust your bubble but.... According to the United States Postal Service (USPS), curbside mailbox posts should be made from wood that is no larger than 4 inches by 4 inches, or a 2-inch diameter steel or aluminum pipe. The post should be buried no more than 24 inches deep and should be 41-45 inches above ground level. The post should also be stable but able to bend or fall away if hit by a car. It's all about safety. Over 50 people a year die from collisions with mailboxes. Some common mailbox supports that are illegal and therefore a huge landowner liability are those made out of brick. A knowledgeable personal injury lawyer is going to sue everybody. Even a DAss personal injury attorney is going to sue EVERYBODY, including the manufacturer. As for damage to a mailbox post by someone knocking it over....well, the owner may not be able to collect for the damage/repair to an illegally installed mailbox. The really scary part is when a motorcyclist or bicyclist runs into an illegally installed mailbox support. Just saying....
