NEC Motorhome Caravan Show 2024: The Quest for a BIG Bed

Well meeting Andrew at the show was far more exciting than buying a new caravan. It really was after watching one of his videos that we decided to take a plunge into caravanning 7 years ago and we love it. We have a lot to thank him for. His videos really don’t show what a genuinely nice and humble man he is. Oh and Buster absolutely loved him, you could tell this the way he pulled forward when he said his name.

This is a subtle and rather brilliant piece of film from an absolute master. I’ve watched this a few times now, and Andrew is at his best. Enthusiasm! Excitement! The joy of having a motorhome or a caravan. This will be the most fun thing you will ever own! Meeting friends - the warm and supportive community, like Jules and Karina of Here We Tow. Making new friends (like Rob and Riannan). Dog friendly - meeting Beeny and Buster, (not forgetting the stars Dougal and Ted). I love this film for showing all of this. Even more, I love this: All this excitement, meeting new people can, exactly as Andrew says, be overwhelming for many people who just want the peace of feeling and being ordinary. Andrew speaks to those people too: “I’m just a man in a van. I’m also just an ordinary person. … I see you, and I hear you.” Andrew is a widely respected journalist with huge knowledge and experience of the industry and 81,000 followers on KZbin, who regularly clocks up in excess of 40,000 views on his films and wins awards. This brilliant piece of work carries all that warmth. All that expertise. That reticence and respect for the space of others. Andrew’s trademark “Hello! Sorry!” is more than just a running joke. It shows his warmth, his friendliness, his humility and in this film he uses it with skill and humour to show that caravans and motorhomes have something for everyone. This is a film the industry needs to pay attention to. If you want to understand your market, then watch this! If you are thinking of buying a caravan or motorhome, this is a great place to start! Oh … and if, like me, you are tall and need a big bed, then this has some great advice. Just mind your head on the door of the Eriba!

The Explore caravan is exceptional value for money. The industry seems to have fallen in love with black fixtures, taps, sinks etc. they look great until you get water marks on them then they’re a nightmare. I don’t see them lasting unless you only visit soft water areas Great video, please keep hallooing, no need to apologise. So glad you enjoyed yourself

Hi Andrew so glad you had a good time on Friday!! I thought you would give in to temptation and buy that Xplore XTC Duo! That is the layout that I love! Been looking at MHs with that layout which would be plenty for Richard and myself plus Holly of course! I went yesterday (Saturday) with my sister as we're both looking to buy a MH/ Van probably next year now. I absolutely fell in love with an Autosleeper Bourton which came in at a meagre £109.000!! If only, I thought. I looked at the Eribas too, I loved the one with the end kitchen instead of a dinette! We fell in love with a few actually! Finally, very soon we shall both be the owners of a van!! Andrew, I have to tell you that you not only look happy and healthy, you sound it too!! I for one am over the moon for you, I think this is what you have needed for quite a while now and I'm so happy I could cry! Will we be getting a big announcement soon?! By the sounds of it, you're planning to stay with your partner for a very long time?! I hope I'm right! Anyway, sorry to have missed you, perhaps the February show? People really get upset by the hellos?!! I’ve been watching you do it for years and still makes me smile! Was getting a bit worried when you started looking at the campers. My friends are trying to convince me to buy one instead of a caravan but it doesn’t make sense in my head. You don’t lose 2/3rds of it to the cab, 2 lots of MOT, tax and insurance, what do you drive around in when you get there? I guess you could buy a small electric microcar but you still end up towing. Your caravan layout is perfect along with the TAB 400. Am looking forward to seeing how this pans out for you and to follow your future travels.

Andrew, American RV service technician “AZ Expert” also says “Hello” when he sees his reflection in a mirror! But you’re the original! I also like how the caravans and coaches use warm fabrics where in the US they all go with vinyls or leather in the high end coaches. Also no carpet runners but some are using the woven vinyl as in the Airstreams.

Great video as always!! I have a Xplorer 304 and a EV. I would like a Eriba because off the electric miles will go up quite a bit! And I don’t live the living in the layout and quality of the Xplorer!

So strange that you have an Xplore 304 and now looking at the 422! That's exactly what we did! Our 304 was our first van in 2020 and just so cute and cosy. We watched your review. My wife slept on the couch and I on the lower bunk bed. The upper bunk kept my clothes in Ikea fold out light cloth boxes. The 304 was light easy to tow and we loved the large front window and the portrait side window. Didn't like the small shower with a curtain though. We did a 7 week tour in France, Extramadura (Spain), Portugal and the beautiful northern Spain. Just loved it. But it was written off in an insurance claim when we were side swiped by a lorry. Replaced the 304 with a 422. What a, pleasure. Nice corner shower. Good washroom. The chest of drawers has a fabulous shelf that pulls out which was what we always used as our dining table. But we crossed to the other side and bought a motorhome. Easier for touring but I can see us going back to a caravan when we're older. Nice to see you on YT again Andrew. Be well.

Great to see you again. A REALLY good video. I'd go so far as to say that, of all the caravan/motorhome/campervan videos, yours are the best. I have a two-year caravan and dread to think of the hit I'd take on selling/px it. So although there is a bit of me saying "motorhome" in my left ear, and I don't rule that out in tbe future, I suspect it will be the Swift making its appearance during the 2025 season. If I were you, I'd go for the Xplore, bearing in mind what it offers and the £70K+ price differential over some of the other options. I look forward to your next video.

Yes I think the Xplore XC Duo is a nice balance of Size Vs Weight and it gives you that open plan feeling making the space bigger than it actually is, I Say Go For It Andrew, you've worked all year time for a little reward I think,👍

I too can truly say it’s all your fault as we bought a Bailey Pegasus Ancona in 2011 following your trip and review! Great video. I’ve never been to any of the shows, they just don’t appeal to me. I think I’d become overwhelmed quite quickly. I prefer to browse the Internet then visit a factory. Thanks as always for sharing an interesting video. I also loved the Explore caravan, it has a similar layout to our campervan but our bed is 6’3” x 6’2” so lots of room for me, my husband and 3 cockapoos. 😁

Ref the Xplore XCduo what have Elddis done if anything to overcome issues they are aware of with the single piece front window ie cracking of top corner/s at ends of hinge and water ingress behind hinge ?

5:55 The "fast regen" figures sound a bit (a lot) dodgy - 600Ah of battery that can be recharged in an hour would require a HUUUUUUUUUUGE alternator and a HUUUUUUUUUUUGE battery to battery charger. Oh, and very very very very thick copper cable (even 120mm^2 cable wouldn't be thick enough). And batteries/BMS that can cope with a sustained 300A charge each. On top of that, it would kill your fuel consumption. I suspect what they mean is that an hour's worth of driving will put in about a day's worth of usage - but given my experience (gas free van conversion with 560Ah battery), even that would be a little optimistic. Sadly there's no mention of it on their website. **EDIT** Hmm. Just re-read that and it sounds a bit negative - well, more negative than I meant. Let's try again..... Firstly, thank you for the video - always a pleasure. The moan about battery charging is born out of frustration with sales techniques in general - always ambiguous and always misleading. It's always worse when you have some expertise in the area (like this with 12v electrics) when some claims stand out like a sore thumb. Ah well. (loving the idea of the wine cooler - wishing I'd put one in the camper now!) Anyway, thank you again.

Transit = new £1500 wet belt every 40,000 miles. Ducato = frequent new air bag modules and leaking fuel filters. Pity no one does a Japanese van. All new ones come with built in computer faults.
