Very impressive! I made one and attached to a short range/cheap 2.4 hk receiver that normally drops off within a park while maneuvering. The range is unbelievable (way beyond visual) regardless of attitude/orientation... further than my long range "high quality" receivers...thank you for the contribution! I removed the receiver case and soldered directly to the small board to keep weight down.

having that metal thing 31.5mm is not right. adding a wire itself from both sides makes the antenna side ~33.5mm and that is the setting for ~2200MHz. So, to have it tuned for WiFi frequency, the internal length should be ~28.5mm. Adding wire from both sides makes it 30.5mm (L/4) that corresponds to WiFi middle freq 2450MHz. A lot of people tried to reproduce your variant and they figured out that the gain is not like expected exactly because of the wrong length. 31.5 internal - is wrong for WiFI; 28.5 internal - is right. Hope this correction helps to build a better antenna for other people.

So it won't work if 31.5mm is considered?

I just followed your tutorial here and have to say THANK YOU!. I've been using a huge directional antenna for years trying to grab free hotspots in my neighborhood and honestly the cable connectors are quite shot, the antenna has been banged around for 10 years and it's just been an OK solution. I made your omni bi-quad and got about 30% better performance without having a 75 foot lmr cable running through the house to the back porch. This is a 30% difference *right at the router*. Amazing. Thank you again!

Wow, these work pretty good. I made one for one of my ESP8266 WiFi modules and get around a 23dB improvement over the ceramic chip antenna on the board. I used some copper clad steel wire from an rg-6 cable to make the antenna.

Lots of questions about wire thickness. Thicker wire will give you a wider frequency range with acceptable impedance match to the antenna. We use the word "bandwidth" for that ... but "bandwidth" means something completely different to computer people than it does to radio people :-). So, use what you find convenient. If your wire is too thick, you will have a hard time bending and soldering it. If it is too thin, it will not support itself and hold its shape. If you stay away from those extremes, anything will work. BUT ONLY USE COPPER! (or silver or gold). With such small dimensions, there is not real cost benefit to using fencing wire and it will not work as well or be as easy to solder.

Most antenna designs I have seen require the inner and outer coax to be isolated ie no continuity the centre goes to the radiating element and the outer goes to the ground plane (isolated) With this quad antenna design the inner coax is directly connected to the outer coax via the copper wire radiating element, ie not isolated? Is this because each element is actually a radiating and ground plane element? Would make sense I suppose. I can see the gains over a traditional dipole would be much increased as the radiating pattern would be flatter, less signal going up vertically and instead going further out horizontally? I'm assuming this design would be suitable for 2.4ghz radio control models?

Is it possible to add two more half-size "bow-ties" in between the larger ones for additional 5ghz wifi reception, or will the larger 2.4 elements shield the higher frequency signal?

Hi Andrew. I have no previous antenna knowledge but learn a lot from your videos. Thank you. My Windows 7 computer (Lenovo K410 IdeaCentre) is in a remote location about 30 feet from a Belkin router (unfortunately they both have internal antennas). I have a question if you don't mind. Is it possible to strengthen my signal with the antenna limitations I have just mentioned and how? I would like to build your Bi-Quad Uni-Directional antenna assuming there is the possibility for improvement. I am probably closer to one neighbors modem than mine.

I connected this same size of omni directional BiQuad antenna as an RX antenna on my drone. So far It has given me about a mile of seamless control and telemetry. That is if I fly my drone in a horizontal straight line from the TX controller. I have it mounted upside down on the belly of my camera drone. The only time it gives me trouble is when I gain altitude. And the 2.4GHz RX is at a 45 degree angle to the TX BiQuad directional antenna. It will cut out and I get major signal loss. It does not perform as well as my skew planar clover leaf design of about the same size. The LHCP skew planar antenna has no signal problems from most any angle. But this BiQuad antenna matches the 4 leaf clover skew planar receiver in distance. As long as your not at a steep angle to it...

Hi Andrew, great work.. excelent video´s. Thank you. One Question: I want to use at a copter, a skew planar (2303-2402Mhz) only for sending (video-Broadcast) and at ground I would use a 3times diversity receiver, with different Antennas, to solve different distances and Area-angels. My Idea, to use two Helix 4turn or I´f seen in your other video, two Biquad-Yagi for the far range, and a clover Leaf in near range and around me. Do you think that will work? Should the thicknes of wire the same as in your´s? For each Antenna I have another Wifi-Stick (TP-Link W722N) with modified driver special for 2.3GHz. As TX I use a Alfa AWUS036NHA, also modified driver. The diversity and the broadcast is working today, but the distance is not really good, so I would improve this. I use it not in GB.

Hi, the class was good, I have some doubts, it is with respect to the material that would be used for its construction, specifically, the type of cable or cables that could be used and what would be the difference between one or the other; Example: the ideal is the 50 Ohm RG58 coaxial cable, some use other 75 Ohms cables, and even since they use electric rigid cable from 1.5 millimeters to just over 3 millimeters. Diameter of cable, etc. Regardless of the type of antenna being built, whether type Biquad, Yagi, Dipole, etc. The serious question: Knowing that it would work for base frequency 2.44 Ghz, which would be the best cable to use, for the elaboration of an antenna for the WIFI, either to use it as receiver or emitter of such signal. And that made so much difference in using one cable or another. I have known that using cables with 75 Ohm can damage the network card or the equipment used. How true is this? Sorry for my bad english

Andrew, could you clear something up for me? In this video a quarter wavelength for 2.4Ghz is 31.5mm but for the blade style antenna a quarter wavelength for 2.4Ghz is 25mm.....why the difference? Should the biquad elements not be made to the same dimensions...25mm? Or should the blade antenna elements be made to the 31.5mm dimension?
@andrewmcneil

robrow Hi Robrow this is probably one of the most controversial topics that have come up since I started making videos. I do intend to do a full video on wavelength and wavelength calculations but for now do a google search for "short dipole" and "hertzian dipole". Because of the way the dipole is constructed it affects the antenna in such a way that in order for it to radiate at 2.4GHz the wavelength has to be shortened. Hope this answers your question Rob and this is the reason I don't like on line calculators as they don't take the design into consideration.

I have lots of 2mm aluminum wire readily available, the kind used in power cabling. If yes, will the design differ in terms of wire lengths etc. - Your measuring tool is 31.5 mm. Shouldn't it be 30.6 mm. (Average Quarter wavelength - Mid of Channel 8 & Channel 9)
