@BodfordBlue2 ай бұрын
If it looks like a Rolex, feels like a Rolex and functions like a Rolex then it must be a Rolex. Firstly, thank for your content, it's insightful, funny, well written and presented. I have recently become interested in watches though I wouldn't consider myself a collector, more someone with time on my hands and a mild enthusiast. My wife purchased a James Cameron Deepsea for me earlier this year and I enjoy the watch very much. I'm a surfer and I like the idea that if I sink to the bottom of the sea my D-Blue will tick on long after I perish. The topic of replica or clone watches and what these simulacra or copies imply is of interest to me. At a recent party I was comparing watches with a friend who travels to Hong Kong regularly and he mentioned that he was purchasing some super clones on his next visit and would I be like to get one. I said yes and he got me a black dial Submariner and a Panda Daytona each for $1000 Australian dollars. I only really buy Rolexes, not because I'm a snob but because I like them and there are just too many nice watches out there from great brands and I fear falling down the rabbit hole of collecting. (I do like the Breitling Datora however and now it's preying on my mind, dam). I'm happy with both replicas and wear them around the house though I always take my "real' Deepsea out as I don't like leaving it at home because it's so expensive and I fear for its safety when not with me. If I did wear my replicas out and someone asked me about them, which I feel is unlikely as most people don't care about these things, I would happily tell them they're clones. I think that someone who considers another poorly because they wear a "fake" watch are just as "fake". The clones look the same as the "real thing" though the finishing is not quite as good, the edges on the replica Submariner bracelet are a little sharper, but apart from that there is no discernable difference to my untrained eye. My replicas are actually keeping better time than my six-year-old second hand Deepsea which I should probably service soon though I don't wish to be parted from it for the two months it takes to service and the fact it's losing a couple of minutes a week is not that much of a concern. How do these replicas make me feel? I have positive and negative feelings about the clones. Every Rolex that is produced at the Switzerland factory is a copy of the previous one and I think that my Chinese Rolex is just a copy of a copy. Use of the word fake is not correct because it implies that the replica is not real whereas is it quite real and functions as such. After buying the replicas wearing my "real" Deepsea feels more important and less important at the same time. More important as it is a lot more expensive and the "real deal" so it carries more weight in my mind at the same time it is also less meaningful as it is just another commodity made on a factory assembly line and in no way 25 times better than the clone which makes me think I'm paying mostly for the Rolex brand which reveals that I too can be shallow and that concerns me somewhat. At the same time wearing the replica is not as "real' and has less statue, though not by much. Wearing the replica is less stressful as I'm not so concerned about damaging it which is a positive as I do fuss about my Deepsea. Rolex makes a million or so watches each year but I hazard to think that the Chinese Rolex factories make more which begs the question who is more relevant or important. If people like these replicas and pay good money for and enjoy them is that wrong? French post modern philosopher Jean Baudrillard said the simulacrum, which is the copy, of which everything is, is never that which hides the truth, it's the truth that conceals that there is none. So, I ask, where is the truth in watches. I would very much appreciate for you to broach this subject with your creative mind and hear what your opinion on this divisive topic is in one of your videos, yours sincerely Bodford Blue.
