I graduated with an AS degree in 2005 for Computer Animation. I never got into this as my career and now almost 20 years later I'm wanting to get back into 3d modeling and so far this tutorial is just amazing. I spent 10s of thousands of dollars for my education and it is just insane how much information is available online for free. Thank you so much!

Information, and TOOLS. Teenage me constantly fell into the "Open Source" rabbit hole of constantly trying out new tools and software for various things just because they're free and community managed... Blender is a great example for modelling, I use GIMP for photo editing (as probably the best alternative to Photoshop, also free btw)... I've come to the point not only is the learning all free on KZbin, but the tools you're learning are also free! Look hard enough, and most common tools in the industry have free alternatives

Ha! I did my BA on Visual Communication Design and graduated in 2005. I had a 3D course where we learned basic Maya, but after graduating I focused more on graphic design and never continued with 3D. I was just thinking how amazing this tutorial is going and after seeing your comment, I decided to comment as well. Andrew, thanks for making it look simple and constantly reassuring us along the way. I've been wishing to get back into 3D for some time now, but as each year passed the first step felt even more daunting. Thanks to you, after 19 years, I was able to make that first step. Hopefully I keep going at it :)

I had bought a few online courses and they really show a lot (they explain pretty much every function) but this is the first time I've really enjoyed a tutorial. As mentioned in the previous part, you don't need to know everything. Praxis is almost more important, everything else comes with time. I can use the purchased courses perfectly as a supplement afterwards, but for learning and memorizing the basic functions, this tutorial is unbeatable! Thank you so much for your time and effort, you are just opening up the world of 3D editing to me. 🤗

@12:30 IMPORTANT TIP about the "Circle of Influence" that I learned the HARD way! If your proportional edit isn't moving JUST a part of the donut but the WHOLE donut, then like me, you've somehow scrolled the SIZE of your circle of influence to be SO big, that now you're moving you whole donut as if in Object mode. As a beginner I tried everything to figure WHY it was doing this. Finally, I decided that my best route to figure out what the problem was, was to begin anew with a new donut. Sure enough, I see the "Proportion Size (Smooth):" on the upper left and notced it was way smaller on this newer file. I was able to go back and fix my old bad donut file. Thank GOD. Hope that helps someone who messes up with the scroll wheel the way that I did.

This is the third donut series I'm following along with for fun since I started with Blender years ago. It's so nostalgic and enjoyable following along with Andrew after all this time. For all you people new to the world of 3d. I know it will feel hard and confusing at first, but don't give up through that first steep learning curve, it's really a life changing experience. After 3 years I was finally able to make Blender my full-time work and it all started with this donut. 🍩

I have been using blender for more than 10 years, I use it professionally, I just this second learned about proportional editing, I’ve been loop selecting and circle grabbing vertices and then push/pulling and shrinking to deform things, for YEARS I am going to CRY why is Blender ALWAYS LIKE THIS
@samixalam_

I'm pretty sure Proportional editing is a relatively new feature tbf, watching blender grow has been amazing! I remember first installing blender in the 2.7 days, and being so overwhelmed😭 not to mention the UI looked ugly too (as an autistic person that actually does mean a lot to me)... I loved 2.8 and the overhaul but didn't have much time around school etc, here I am in 4.2 and FINALLY learning it! So much has changed and it's great we get all this for free!

I like how you encouraged people to, "work on the fly" because I used to pressure myself to match it perfectly like the video. Remember guys, Blender Guru learned this stuff when there was little to no tutorials online. Loosen up, you have a guide in front of you and can play it back to see what tools to use. Cheat sheet comes in handy as well. Loving the content and I cant wait to bring my own creations into my games.

for all of you out there who are struggling, KEEP GOING, you will get it. I learned blender less than 4 months ago using this man's 3.6 tutorial. It's the one you want to watch. I would rewatch every section of each video 5 to 20 times each so ik it can be rough. I'm re-watching the tutorial to learn the new 4.0 update but I've only replayed maybe 3 sentences total. So it really will get easier.

For real, I’ve been trying these donut tutorials since the first one and I still can’t make it past Part 2…putting aside that there are parts of Part 1 that I have to skip because I can’t figure them out. In so many years of trying to learn the basics of this program I still don’t understand what any of the keys or features mean, I haven’t been able to memorize how to navigate around, and I still rely on File>New project as my Deselect button because there just doesn’t seem to be one. I feel like I’ve wasted years of my life and I hate myself for being this stupid. I don’t understand why people say this stuff is fun 😭

I've been dabbling in 3d for too many years to count. I created and animated an Eagle Transporter from Space 1999 in Povray when there was no graphical front end, you had to code the shapes, distortion and movement in a text file. I played with the Blender Game Engine a few years back, throwing balls at a wall and dropping rain into puddles. Now I'm back and starting from square 1. Thanks for starting your series again for v4. I'm really looking forward to getting some great results. And when I make it to Hollywood I promise to put a donut in my first movie! 😁👍

In case someone runs into the proportional edit moving the whole object instead of deforming it problem, you simple have to scroll up with the scroll wheel, that's because you made the grey ring too big, this way it gets smaller, achieving the desired deforming effect. Great video!!

I’m working on making my first donut now, but I gotta say, those last 40 seconds or so was the most valuable part thus far. It is a steep learning curve and we are in the middle of it and it does seem very foreign, but it’s been fun. Thank you thus far and thank you for the encouragement too.

I got a problem, that if I want to select the edges (like in the minute 16:08) I can't do it. What the problem was is, that "Emulate 3 Button Mouse" was on. Only if that one is off, you can select that edges by pressing "alt+left_click". I hope I could help those, who also got that problem.

at 3:15 right click wasn't bring up the specials menu, I don't know why this happened to me but I found the short cut to help. Pressing W will bring the menu up, from there you can click smooth shading or D to shade smooth. if anyone knows why right click doesn't work for me and how to fix it, i would be grateful

I have had a go with Blender before but I haven't for the life of me figured it out. Just watching the first video, I've already got the controls and basics. Thank you.

At 16:00 if you’re stuck on edge select you might be struggling with your preference setting from the previous video. What worked for me was disabling the “Emulate the 3 button mouse” in input preferences. Now followed the steps he said and the edge of the donut and all the edges in that row should be selected in that row.

not sure if someone else commented but a tip too for selecting the middle line! Click one of the verts, hold shift then double click and it will select the whole line! without shift and double click it selects the up and down verts of the line and not left and right. Something I learned when I was in Maya for 2 years

Running through them again. ***If you're looking for Proportional Editing and it's not in the top right. The current version of Blender (fresh install for me today) has it in the top center. Looks exactly the same as on his screen, just slide your eyes left and click the circle-dot-target icon. Let's go!

I was in college back when Pixar was first touting its 3D stuff with Luxo Jr & Tin Toy. One of my friends was in Computer Science back then & was touting all the "3D artwork" he was able to do by entering what looked like a ton of numbers & code. I knew BASIC and some DOS, but I was also into drawing & painting -- all the work my friend was putting into 3D was really counterintuitive & "left-brain"ish, not the way the artists I knew worked at all. And everything since then just seemed to take 3D & computer art out of everyone's hands and keep it firmly in the hands of only those who could afford the fancy expensive software & machines. Realizing that we finally hit the point where we can put the intuitive hands-on work back into the hands of artists and not just coders is a huge relief. Making it available for EVERYONE to afford, instead of those with the $$$ is a huge high.

I have been using Solidworks, Inventor and other 3D engineering modeling software for years and Blender still has a learning curve for me because it is more art and creative based vs. engineering based. My experience in those software programs still help, but the learning curve, not as bad, is still there.
