One of the greatest features of Bonham's playing is knowing when NOT to play. He creates drama by leaving space for the music to breathe. Although he's known for the power of his playing, he's just as powerful when he holds back and gives space. Light and shade.

As a painter I totally understand light and shade, but also positive and negative space, and Bonham understood that too. What I mean by this is that the soundscape of his actual drumming influences what it sounds like when he not playing.. It is similar to light and space, but a bit more profound.

Again, Bonzo playing perfectly for the music and not overplaying. Of course, live was a different story as it should be. But being that young and having the restraint in the studio to come up with his own fantastic rhythms, unlike others might do and to just concentrate on what’s best for the whole song. Amazing!

You touched on the relationship with the rhythm between Pages guitar work and Bonham. It has been said that both live and in the studio Bonham watched page and played to him and movements. There is often accentuated drum parts specifically linked to the guitar. Ramble on is exactly the tune to point this out. JPJ is essentially a lead instrument and the guitar and drums are the rhythm until the electric chorus

My personal opinion is he was tapping on a guitar case but no one knows for sure - not even the rest of the band; they've been asked and don't remember. Jonesy's bass work is so melodic but it turns almost percussive during the "ramble on" choruses, punching you in the face; a satisfying treat to the ears. Another thing I really enjoy is the acoustic guitar that plays throughout, not only during the idyllic parts, but its a subtle anchor piece. This album as a whole was recorded primarily while on tour. They would go to whatever studio they could find in the town they were playing in to lay down tracks and, since they were also playing live, the recordings got to benefit from the occasional riff or phrasing they may have discovered during an improv the night before. Jimmy said that he was so sick and tired of listening to the various pieces repeatedly, that he'd lost confidence in the album by the time it was to be mixed. He needn't have worried because - as is witnessed, the album sounds phenomenal. That is something else I appreciate about Zeppelin - the musical vision. As producer, Jimmy could've made each song/album sound however he wanted but he wasn't hesitant to lift the others to their own rightly deserved prominence as fellow master musicians and we all get to benefit from those talents.

This band loved syncopation. Page was playing muted syncopated strums in that part to add a funkiness, but notice his other tracks drop out at that part so it's more featured. Most of the other parts have 3-4 guitar tracks doing different little things, but the strumming acoustic is pretty constant throughout. Later on, Jimmy would be using 8-12 guitar tracks to build up his guitar army sound. Achilles' Last Stand is a wall of guitars.

Page's greatest trick, no matter which element you focus on, drums, bass (that bass), guitars or vocals, your brain will be convinced that's the best element of the song. He pulled that trick a lot, but 'Ramble on' is the perfect example.

Thank you Andy again for the great breakdown and analysis! Holding back the snare, allowing the groove to breathe for the bass and guitar...your analysis gave me new insight of what is going on there. And how about the kick drum perfectly in sync with the bass, adding to the groove of the bass beat. Do I have that right? Is that the kick drum? That section of the groove always takes my breath away.

Did you watch the Page & Plant version of this? I believe Michael Lee was tapping the rim to make that sound. It’s P&P Wembley 11/6/98 around 1:38:00 second song in encore. Second song in my playlist.

@@JohnBonhamisEverything Just checked it out, pretty cool! Michael Lee was so good playing live with them. Got to see Plant Page in 1995 and it was fantastic! Not sure what he is tapping with the sticks to make that sound, since it is a fan made video and no close ups. And I have been checking out your other playlists. The movies and documentaries playlist was an eye opener....I had no idea the Led Zeppelin DVD's were uploaded to KZbin, both DVD 1 and DVD 2 there to watch and enjoy! So awesome! I own both from the 2003 release and surprised they were not blocked on KZbin. You should check out my channel/page, I got cool playlists for you to check out, LZ and other cool stuff.

Just found your channel, Andrew, and it is great! And to answer your question about a "guitar case," the answer is, no. Two friends and I saw Led Zeppelin perform in the autumn of 1969 in Los Angeles on their first American tour. This is quite simply musical mastery of the first order. On another note, in "Dazed and Confused," Page used a violin bow during his solo. Now that you know, you will instantly pick up were that happened in the performance. Onward and upward.

Andrew, How Many More Times will I say Great video!?? Who knows?? It has always amazed me how Jimmy played amazing rhythm guitar where sometimes you can’t tell if you’re hearing Jimmy or JPJ. I LOVE how Bonham always followed whatever Jimmy felt like throwing in and he would just throw in extra beats or hold back by instinct and feel. I’m convinced they will never be matched bc of their magical connection! Make sure you check out the O2 version of this-Jason is the closest to John’s feel Ive heard & felt.

A couple of friends and I went to the LZ concert in Los Angeles in 1969, and I can't recall Bonzo reaching over to a guitar case. But then, we never expected Page to use a violin bow on his guitar. This band refused to be "normal." They were inventive from their embryonic beginnings.

Might I suggest Jethro Tull with Barriemore Barlow on drums. By the way, John Bonham referred to Barlow as "the greatest rock drummer England ever produced." Try "Minstrel in the Gallery", "Hunting Girl" or "Cold Wind to Valhalla" for starters.

Page was like Bonham, He knew restraint. There were songs with no solos or solos that were brief and beautiful. It was summed by Virgin Rock, a KZbin reviewer, who said the LZ songs she had heard were all about the song, not obvious displays of virtuosity. Think of it terms of great art. It is about the whole painting, what you see when you step back. It is not great art if the artist's skill in painting hands is the sole point of interest.
