I saw him play several years ago with his solo band. He was such a trooper. He took requests from the audience. The band just winged it on a couple of songs. I was really drunk and was yelling, "Everyone play something different. Give us chaos!" He started laughing, turned to the band and said, play anything you want for the next couple of minutes. No joke. The audience was laughing hilariously. When they stopped Summers look at me and asked, "Ok...are you happy with that?" A great player and showman.

@@michael_caz_nyc when I was a kid we had the documentary Police in Monserrat come on the TV. When he was on the balcony and showed how he got the Message sound I was transfixed. I just couldn’t wait to buy a compressor and echo etc. Glory days when the guitar was king and it’s stars were like Jedi knights.

I started playing guitar when I was 15 (30 now). Andy and the Police were a massive influence then and now. My mom got me Andy's hot licks DVD when I turned 16. It was mostly far beyond my ability at the time, but I studied the chord booklet that came with the DVD like a bible and got turned on to jazz guitar more thoroughly hearing Andy discuss his influences and how jazz influenced his playing

I started playing guitar with two total "opposite" influences: Brian May and Andy Summers. I tried to imitate his sound in my first gagrage band in Buenos Aires (1984-1985) with a MXR Dyna Comp, a BOSS DD-2 Digital Delay and a BOSS CE-3 chorus. In time of no Internet and no information around. Later I realized he used an Electric Mistress Flanger and an Echoplex. Years later I met the man himself in the backstage of the concert he and I think Ernesto Bitetti gave in my city. A real gentleman, with a very witty sense of humor and incredibly talented.

As a kid of 11 in 1982 I discovered the Police but didn't know who they were. A song was on the radio in the car. Some nothing station, probably a college kid falling asleep at the board, no band names, no nothing for songs or bands. Song song song ad ad song song song, that was it. Roxanne. That was on a summer trip, my legs melting into the vinyl in a '74 Polara with no a/c on the way to the ferry with my folks and cousins. Later I heard it again but thought the cops made up some songs. Weird. A few summers later I heard Synchroncity as an album and adored the band and all of their songs, especially the oddball ones. Andy Summers created texture and context for songs that was so different from the diddly-diddly-diddly of the 1980s and how his three piece filled up the sonic landscape so fluidly has still got me hooked in 2024. A masterful guitarist and King of tasteful restraint.

1:39 - So awesome that Andy would think of this. So awesome that Sting and Stewart wouldn’t tamper with it. Waiting for Rick Beato to discuss this. Musical bravery at its best.

I never figured out whether Andy Summers could shred or improvize, but I think his real strength was playing exactly what the song needed - he always seemed to value the cohesion of the song and playing something tasteful and appropriate rather than showcasing his technical abilities. He also used guitar effects incredibly well.

I realize this is probably not the popular opinion, but I totally agree with you! Sting is very talented, but there are really only a handful of his solo songs I ever listen too. Seriously, how do you top "Bring On The Night" or "Walking On The Moon" with Andy and Stewart? Good luck! :)

Stuart's drumming is extraordinary. He must be the absolute master of not repeating himself and constantly surprising the listener. I love how baffled I get trying to follow what he's doing. I'm not a drummer - I'm a guitar player, but I love his off-kilter feel.

@@HIWATTSteve dude. You’re a real fan eh? When I was gigging round London in the early 80s, I went into a bar and the only table that had room was occupied by a single guy. Turned out to be Stewart, who was patient enough to tolerate about 20 questions and much needed advice. At one point he threw his hands up and chuckled ‘Jesus you know more about me than I know about myself!’ Just imagine if he encountered both you and I at the same time. 😂

He has not influenced me at all. However, I like his bringing complex chord voicings (often via simple fingerings) from jazz theory (extensions) and changing the hackneyed progressions of rock into something with much greater emotional deftness and mystery. He loves kit and uses the magic boxes for musical purposes not gloss. I like that he's cheeky and also knows his own worth as a great musician not just as a guitar player. His solo records are wilder than anything he did with the Police - but that work is stunning compared to most Pop players. Clearly, Mr Summers has many influences, across styles and cultures. Power to him! There were very few people with that austere crystalline sound, but Vinnie Riley (Durruty Column) was my favourite at that time.

@@HIWATTSteve It's funny, but I never much cared for Sting's solo work. His songs weren't the same for me without Andy & Stu, who are both irreplaceable collaborators. It's hard to imagine any singer/songwriter being fortunate enough to work with them, and thinking "Nah, I'm gonna go solo, and go more for more of a lounge-jazz sound."
