There’s a story about John McEnroe trying to play this riff on guitar in his hotel room when someone knocks on the door. John thought It was going to be someone complaining about the noise. Turns out, it was David Bowie, who was staying at the same hotel. He offered to show John the correct way to play the riff.

A&A - The first rule of listening to Bowie is that you unburden yourself of expectations and let him drive. Bowie does have more mainstream material, but he created it and moved on from it to something else years before anybody else in music went there. He was a time traveler.

There was so little public discussion of LGBTQ issues then...my friends of that age who identify as say Bowie was their god for having the balls speak out and promote with his appearance and lyrics they could relate to...with a crazy popular riff, on the radio, in the 70's! Although "Rebel Rebel" is a great track a lot of his other singles have a lot more musical meat to them. "Golden Years" is one such - as is "Ashes to Ashes" and I always loved the sad sad feel of "This is not America" - which like Neil Sedaka's song "The Immigrant" (it was about John Lennon) mourns the dilution or loss of the American dream.

This song is based on the character Julia from George Orwell's "1984". She is described as a "rebel from the waist down"...Interested to see what more modern audiences would make of the lyrics "a handful of ludes"...The album this is from, "Diamond Dogs", was originally conceived as a concept album based on that book. When Bowie was unable to obtain the rights to explicitly reference it from Orwell's widow, he altered it, though there are many, many allusions, such as songs titled "Big Brother", "We Are The Dead", and "1984". Highly recommended. This was the first album Bowie did after parting with his longtime guitarist and collaborator Mick Ronson, and Bowie plays the guitar himself. I'm sorry, but a B+ on this is very nearly heresy...Heh...This is easily in a top ten list of his greatest songs...

@@dwinkleman Yeah...Just wondered if younger people knew...For the kids: "Ludes" was a slang term for a powerful barbituate that doctors regularly prescribed at one time - Quaalude. Recreational abuse really ramped up in the early to mid 70's. So much so that pharamaceutical companies phased out production. The slang could also refer to Mandrax, which was another brand name for the same drug. I believe those were manufactured in Europe.

I have a special place in my heart for artists that seemed to do whatever they felt like musically and got popular anyway. Guys like Warren Zevon, Johnny Cash, Beck, and of course Bowie. His songs can be so different from one to another, and yet somehow they're still OBVIOUSLY Bowie in an indescribable way. When you get back to him, I hope you hit the title track from this album, Diamond Dogs.

Speaking of Bowie guitar riffs, his early ‘80s album “Let’s Dance” featured a young Stevie Ray Vaughan on lead guitar. Check out “Modern Love,” “China Girl” (co-written by Iggy Pop), and the title track, “Let’s Dance,” which happen to be the first three tracks on the record. Bowie never stayed in the same lane musically. Everything he did was groundbreaking. When you come back to more ‘70s Bowie, check out “TVC-15,” “Changes,” and “Golden Years.”

Hey Bowie needed some radio hits too! The album this is from, Diamond Dogs has a ton of the Bowie avant-garde sound you want and this song slots in fantastically as a light moment. Listening to the whole album in order is an experience. Highly recommend. What makes Rebel Rebel quintessential Bowie is the core Bowie message of it's ok to be whoever you are. You will be loved and accepted even if it doesn't feel like that now. In this case it comes out in terms of gender expression or fluidity which was a message definitely ahead of its time.

Rebel is relative to the time you are living in. This is when Glam rock was coming to the fore. There is a lot of gender bending, flamboyant outfits going on in this subculture, which was very rebellious at the time. Today this has been normalized but in the early 70's it was still pretty taboo. Not to mention the drug culture undertones. The lyrics are a bit more rebellious then at first listen, particularly for the time.

While on the subject of Bowie ! An Album that gets overlooked quite a bit is "The Man Who Sold The World " Bowie plays a 12 string Acoustic ,and saxaphone , The Bass is ace as well ! Tracks to Check out IMO are "Running Gun Blues " and "Black Country Rock " Cheers !

Alex, this IS the “other” Bowie. Like Ziggy, Diamond Dogs is a concept album about a dystopian future based on the writings of William S. Burroughs and George Orwell. This is just the poppiest song from it. Ziggy Stardust has songs like this too. Like “Hang On to Yourself.”

Diamond Dogs is a terrific record, but I was never crazy about this particular track, even though it was the hit single. It doesn't really get going until the third verse. However, it's immediately preceeded by the "Sweet Thing" suite, which I think is one of the best of his career.

I think the lyrics "sell this song" along with the riff....and the "cowbellish" sound. Andy... "we're not sure if you're a boy or a girl...." Haha...just kidding. I'm a fan of rock with humor ;) .

An off- topic point to ponder: It's all good... Actually it's all elevator music. Everything from Elvis to Elton to Stevie and Duran Duran is all elevator music. Contrary to conventional opinion, elevator music isn't played in elevators. No the term means , "music to elevate your mood." Most music makes me feel better instantaneously. In the 60s Ray Conniff Orchestra would make instrumental records out of songs like Purple Haze or Louie Louie or Wild Thing. This music was played in department stores while women shopped. It was called MUZAK. They ripped all the funk and soul right out of the music thereby giving it a pejorative vibe. Nobody likes "elevator music" until they understand the real meaning. And now you Know!! Don't you feel a lift from David Bowie? Or David Byrne? "Same as it ever was."

I remember the day this album was released, me rushing home with it in my hot little hands and playing the whole thing three times in a row. My verdict then and still now is that "Rebel Rebel" is the worst song on the album, and still a great song. Better songs with some of the weirdness you seek are "Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing (Reprise)" and "We Are The Dead". You'll enjoy the madness of "The Chant of the Ever Circling Skeleton Family" as well. If you want a Bowie song from this period that will astonish you try "Aladdin Sane (1913-1938-197?)".

Damn guys, you just made my day. LOVE this song and Bowie in general. The lyrics are spot on as are all of his songs. Check this out at Live Aid in 1985. He has toooo many great hits to list but "Changes", "Ziggy Stardust", "Heroes", "Modern Love", "Moonage Daydream" etc etc to name a few...Appreciate you keeping it honest as always with your reactions!🧡

Jean Genie’s riff is as iconic imho. Strangely it was kept from #1 in the UK by Blockbuster by the Sweet which had essentially the same riff. If you ever want to do a deep dive, Sweet Thing/Candidate on the DD album is some of his very best songwriting.

Bowie wrote about everything that moved him, and that included hanging out with the amazing people he came across in his amazing life. If you're expecting every song to be a scifi fantasy, you've put him in a box, and he definitely didn't live in boxes. Check out his version of 'Wild is the Wind', or even his Tin Machine stuff, to see a different side. He even did a duo with Bing Crosby for god's sake! BTW: if you get a chance to see the movie 'Moonage Daydream', do! Not a documentary, it's more of an audiovisual assault on the senses for 2 hours, but gives a good impression of him as a person and artist.

It might sound like a Pop song by today's standards, but in 1974 you didn't mention trans-gender anything and you wouldn't sing "Hot Tramp, I love you so!" and expect to be played on the radio.

If you want weird, play this song at the end of a sequence that goes Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing (reprise)/Rebel Rebel. That's how it's organized on the album, and I think they all go together. Then think about why the tone changes when you get to Rebel Rebel.

I think Alex missed quite a bit of the lyrics on this first listen if he doesn't think this falls in line David Bowie's usual propensity to sing about the oddities in life. This 100% is not a typical coming of age song. And especially not for the time it came out. Even now with basically all forms of media trying to normalize it, androgyny is still fairly taboo. And when this song game out? Oh boy.

This was the 1st album that David Bowie played electric guitar on...Mick Ronson and the Spiders were gone… so he kept it pretty simple. The album as a whole is really awesome... it's a moody album about a decaying world in 1984. I like this song a lot, a bit repetitive, but you really should hit up the title track... Play the entire title track next… with the Prelude … and pay attention to the lyrics, they're wild! "Cracked Actor" will give you weird AND great guitar!

Thanks Guys, and you are right. This is a standard Pop banger, no Bowie "Weirdness", and that is my fave part of Bowie too. Still, this rocks and is still all over Classic rock radio! If you want stangeness, try the title cut of Station to Station or "I Am The DJ" off Lodger.
