No, it doesn't. It looks brand new. Wood doesn't look like that after 100 years. It decays like any other organic material. In fact wood (obviously not a burr) is used in archaeological dating in a process called dendrochronology. Also the varnish on an antique wooden artefact from hundreds of years ago would have a different finish.

The moment I saw the word burl I knew what to expect - the simplest of forms to let the wood speak for itself with nothing but a rich varnish to bring out the grain. And I was not disappointed. I particularly liked the random irregularities in the rim and holes. I could feel the wood telling you where to go.

Beautiful! Perfection doesn't need any improvement! I love that you stopped when that point was reached, rather than filling holes/indentations with epoxy to make the bowl 'perfect'. It's perfect as it is!

Thank you for this video, my dad was a wood turner, self taught in his 60s and i hadn't seen him make a bowl so it was great seeing how he used to do it. In NZ burls were hard to find but he managed to get a few.

Love how you leave some of the live edges and other natural imperfections. A lesser artist would have turned it down to uniformly smooth burl. Leaving those checks and cracks gives the piece so much more interest and character. And a visual reminder that this exquisite bowl was indeed wrought of a living tree. Well done.

Those finishing type cuts your making on the outside of the bowl where you use the wing as a scraper. Almost ever time I try it I end up with a lot of tear out. Great work and a nice good honest bowl. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Have you ever considered drilling some holes in a cool piece of wood and inserting pencils into these holes. I googled for "mappa burl" after a commenter suggested that it might be the type of wood. That's a poplar type of wood. No pun intended. It looks very much like what it could be. It turned out wonderfully! 😁👍👍

Many years ago one of my dad's friends decided to turn a mystery burl that a logger friend gave him and it nearly killed him. It was poison oak!
