I remember this game back when I was kid. Penny answered a lot of haters early in the season if he can shoulder the load with Shaq starting that season injured. His first 40 pt game. He really would’ve been one of the all time greats if he didn’t hurt his knee.

A statline like that was so hard to get in those days. In 33 games without Shaq he went 25 ppg while being the primary facilitator and kept the team second in the conference. And he still wasn't in his prime. This game proves he could go for the scoring crown if he wanted. Doubled and triple teamed, with handchecking and still scored 42.

@@PATROKLOSSSSWhile I agree it was incredible and I am a HUGE Penny fan, you're lying to yourself if you think he wasn't in his prime. He was 24 years old and had reached his prime the season before in the playoffs. I actually would argue that this was part of his peak but he did get better as the season went on despite his numbers regressing. He just had to share with Shaq. If you mean he never reached his "peak" then I understand what your argument is and would probably agree but this was absolutely during his prime which he hit the year before in the playoffs.

@@bdww4072 Imagine, they talk about Luka not being in his prime yet. Usually the span between 27 to 32 years old was considered the prime years, by 80s-90s standards. Players tended to polish their games, overcame deficiencies and read the game better. In Penny's case, he had already limited his turnovers, which were an issue earlier, due to his overpassing. He also refined his perimeter game and looked to draw contact instead of rushing shots or relying on athletic finishes. That glimpse we saw in '97 playoffs, I believe he would had played consistently at that level, at least until the 03-04 season, if he was pain-free. It couldn't had gone otherwise.
