Bobby Caldwell is the jazz artist most noted for being white and yet sounding African-American. It got to the point where his label tried to hide the fact that we was white. "What You Won't Do For Love" is a good example of the "quiet storm" sub-genre. Quiet storm is a kind of slow, extra-smooth jazz meant to be played late-night on radio stations - the idea is that the music should go well with either coming home from a night on the town or a graveyard shift at work.

---------- CHANNEL DESCRIPTION ----------
This channel was about a compilation of reactors reacting to a music video before. I carefully cut the highlight of the video where the reactor listens and makes a comment to either:
a) how the singer/s and the instrumental music background perform the song,
b) how the reactors can relate to the message of the song, and
c) how the whole music performance can affect to the reactors.
By doing this, it takes me between 4 to 6 hours to transform this video into something new to the viewers. I provided a time stamp in the videos for the viewers if they want to skip and just watched their favorite reactor. I also put the reactor’s name in the video, and I added a transition in between clips of the video as well.
------- BIG CHANGES IN THIS CHANNEL --------
Started on June 26, 2021, I decided to change the content on this channel by uploading my own reaction video and expressed my personal comment about the music video as well as the performer. No returning back to making videos without me or my voiceover. STAY HAPPY & BE BLESSED!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These reactors thought that this guy who sang this song “What You Won’t Do For Love” is black until they saw this video. I hope you guys will enjoy this video.

Back in the day I was an acquaintance of Bobby, our dealings were strictly business matters and our initial meetings were by phone. We had to meet in person one day and. when Bobby introduced himself I was shocked. With a big smile I said, Bobby, it does not matter to me at all, but I have to tell you, I thought you were black! He laughed and said he takes that as the highest compliment. He also said when he first started recording he intentionally kept his face off the albums because he loved the fact people thought he was black. He was a great guy. RIP Bobby and THANK YOU for all the love and great music you brought to the world.

The beginning of the vid is a likeness of the albums cover art. Bobby saw this artists self portrait and asked for ut to be cover art. I guess it does add to the "surprise' he's white but for me it's him giving life to the painting he loves so much.

My mom introduced me to Bobby Caldwell when I was a kid. I remember her pulling out a vinyl and putting it in the player, then dancing around the livingroom like no one was watching. So now that she's gone, this reminds me of her every time. It brings me back to a beautiful moment as a kid. There was nothing like getting to see the freedom and pure unadulterated joy on my mom's face. She was a beautiful dancer. Thank you Bobby for a beautiful musical backdrop to a memory of the woman I loved the most in my life.

A little historical note you might find interesting: back in the '50's and '60's, with black artists who "sounded" white, like Nat King Cole and Johnny Mathis, the album covers didn't have their faces on them, for fear that people in certain parts of the country wouldn't buy them if they knew the artists were black. Even some singers like Otis Redding who WERE black saw the record companies use very generic covers to sell more records. With Bobby Caldwell, it was the EXACT OPPOSITE. Bobby "sounded" so black, they were worried now that "urban stations" wouldn't play the record if they knew he was white. So, the label used the silhouetted image that you see at the start of this video on the covers of both his album and the single. And that's one reason why for years, people just ASSUMED that he was black. But the more blue-eyed soul singers that became popular - Michael McDonald, Boz Scaggs, Bobby Kimball of TOTO - the more they got comfortable putting their real identities out there.

Bobby Caldwell was blessed to have a good music director and musicians to back up this song. He sung this song from the heart and the mix of R&B with Jazz on the extended track is an amazing thing to hear. I discovered him on WJZZ Detroit Jazz Radio. They played this song during their morning smooth jazz show every Sunday. I didn't know anything about him and just fell in love with this song and it's arrangement. I just loved the power of this. Mr. Caldwell passed away this year 2023. I love anyone who sings from the heart. Bobby Caldwell did that. May the love you shared continue on. Blessed in Spirit, eternal rest❤

When both he and Teena Marie came out, we didn't know they were White, but after they made appearances on television, we saw them. Caldwell and Teena was a shock because there were always White artist that played R&B and Jazz tracks, but we always could tell the difference in vocal tone, inflection, etc, from White singers. Bobby Caldwell! Still performing, mostly in Japan. The story is he wrote the song in 2 days. His record company intentional left his face off of the album cover. The purpose was to see how it would be received in the black urban radio setting. He was on tour with Natalie Cole. The audience was mostly black. When he came out, you could hear a pin drop!! The record was already a smash it. Even today, March, 2021, it is still played. I heard it on the radio 2 days ago. He will be 70 in August. Georgie Woods, a Philadelphia radio DJ, is thought to have coined the term 'blue-eyed soul' in 1964, initially to describe the Righteous Brothers. Another group, that some thought was black are the Bee Gees (on some of their songs.)

This is the one white friend you had, who hung around a lot and he soaked up some of the SOUL while eyeing your sister. Super cool dude. In the 70s, I remember as a very young kid that blacks and whites were coming out with great disco and soul music. Think of KC and the Sunshine Band, Boz Scaggs, etc. Then, something bad happened, and crazy white people burned the records saying "Disco was dead". Anyone remember that?
