the first version of evangelion had a message to share: acceptance. That's what the last episodes of the serie was made, for shinji to understand that he isn't less worth than anyone else and can accept himself the way he is. but since the public didn't get it, they made a rebuild that is about shinji, not accepting himself and his fate. that's why in the rebuild, when Shinji wakes up after year, he didn't grow and that's what Asuka was talking abou when she says that this is the "Eva's curse". They didn't grow in mind just like the public who watched the past Evangelion. It's not the Evangelion we knew years ago for this reason but it seems like the public still don't get it...

What I like about Anno’s approach with the rebuilds is that the characters can change their fate from the story of the series. It’s the same plot but Shinji and others make it unfold differently, how they react to their experience, feelings and actions are unique. The message is that our fates are not set as long as we still have agency.
