For me, this episode really supports the hypothesis that a soul is effectively a superego. It gives you the *capacity* to resist your baser impulses. But that doesn't mean you have to.
@jonathannoble7845

But the only limits on behavior that vampires lack are one’s government by morality and compassion. Plenty of vampires have shown to have significant self control when it comes to resisting their baser impulses because there is a practical gain in doing so. Angelus, for example, was more than capable of keeping humans alive and unharmed because they were more useful to his long-term plans that way. Successful hostage taking and negotiation also requires the superego, not just morals. Personally, here is how I view vampires and souls: In some versions of the afterlife, when a person dies, everything that is bad in them gets burned away by the light of heaven, leaving a pure soul to enter the pearly gates, and the burned up ashy sludge left behind is what goes to hell. When a person becomes a vampire, instead of the burnt up ashy sludge going to hell and the good parts of the soul going to heaven, the burnt up Ashly sludge melds with the mindless demon spirit animating the corpse to create the vampire’s personality, and the rest of the soul floats aimlessly in the ether until the vampire is killed or a spell is cast to return their soul to their body.

It’s why I think Spike is the way he is. As William, his capacity for love and his desire to be loved in return both simultaneously had selfish and selfless aspects to them. He was coming from a good and well meaning place, but he also had a lot of bitterness tangled up with those feelings. This, as a vampire, he still has that same capacity and desire for love, but it’s primarily defined by its selfish aspects in him. He was able to risk his life for the name of love even without a soul, because it still allowed him to be brave and heroic and carry out a romantic fantasy, SPOILERS I GUESS but it was only after he got his soul back that he was able to actually accept the notion that Buffy didn’t love him back.

No, there's nothing in Buffy lore about newborns being stronger (that's a Twilight thing). I think Darla's strength in that moment is meant to be driven by her rage. Rage at having her choice taken away from her, rage at what Drusilla did, rage at remembering the first time Angel killed her, rage at realising he's trying to kill her again. And concomitantly you have Angel weakened by guilt (at so many freaking things) and a feeling of reluctance to kill her having failed her, which makes him hesitant.

"And yet somehow, I just can't seem to care." This is one of my favorite episodes! Darla and Dru are so great and fun together (I'm ringing all over"). That ending is so dark (keep in mind not everyone in there were necessarily bad, some were just the innocent dates of the party guests) and it shows a different side of Angel and what he's capable of even with a soul.

2:50 "almost maternal but also very sexual in nature". Yep. And I think that explains why vampires are in such thrall to their sires. Sires are both lover and parent. Retroactively, I think it also speaks to how in love with Buffy Angel was in S1. We saw his conflicted feelings towards Darla even then, but when she threatens Buffy's life, he kills her.

This episode has one of my favorite WTF moments that the audience was definitely not supposed to notice. When the group are all in Angel's car and Cordy makes Angel turn around there's a quick shot as the turn where you can see that everyone in the car are stunt doubles... except for Cordy who suddenly transforms into a doll. It's one of those things that I can never un-see and laugh at every time.

I feel like Darla's change of heart is coming from initially waking up, having to fight for her unlife, the last thing her remembering being Drusilla coming in and taking away her choice- she's rightfully angry at Drusilla and attacks her. Drusilla breaking down and saying about how she thought she was doing 'what you wanted, saving you' and then rambling about the worm brings Darla to her senses in a way that Drusilla is still mad and not in her right mind and well she's back to being a vampire now, might as well embrace the lack of humanity and have a good time. There's a small thread of irritated compassion in Darla's interactions with Drusilla. Darla's lack of soul doesn't come with a lack of feeling, unlike Angelus who is very much soulless, we have seen the Darla loves Angelus deeply and I think, like spike and Dru has a little humanity even when she's a vampire.

"But not tonight." "And yet some how I just can't seem to care." "No, I walked to my car and drove away." "You're all fired." This episode is quite quotable. The dark Angel arc begins. Also something people often forget is that Angel doesnt hold the same stance on killing as Buffy does. Though he generally tries to keep people alive and even redeem them Angel kills humans all the time and he has shown that he has special contempt for Wolfarm and Hart. That being said not everyone at WFH are straight up evil and we don't know that everyone in the cellar was a lawyer so Angel letting them die is not ok.
@blackkatt777
@blackkatt777 2 жыл бұрын
It's the irony that Wolfram and Hart brought Darla back in hopes of corrupting Angel and leading him away from his Shanshu prophecy coming true. In this episode, their plan worked, but at the wrong time. Like a spider getting caught in their own web. Yeah, the fandom went nuts at the end of that scene, when he locked them in. That was almost Angelus-esque. This reminds me of something that someone said or a phrase that goes "No matter how far you go, you can't escape family." lol

I hear some people make the argument that what Angel did was justified because of how evil the lawyers were. This line of thought argues that the lawyers were responsible for a great deal of suffering, and killing them stopped them from hurting more people, so it was a good thing, in a utilitarian, pragmatic kind of way. ...There are two problems with this: 1) If Angel really did do this for pragmatic reasons and not revenge, why not set the building on fire to take out Darla and Drusilla as well? They're also extremely dangerous, especially together. Him leaving them alive only makes sense if his primary motivation was to punish W&H for stealing Darla's redemption from her and making his life hell. And 2) Holland told Lindsey to bring a date. There were probably spouses, girlfriends, boyfriends in that cellar who didn't work for the firm. We see in the next episode that there were catering staff down there. Holland's wife didn't seem evil, and Angel apparently left her to bleed out on the floor after she begged him to help her. He absolutely killed innocent people when he did this. ...There is no justification for this. What he did may be understandable. But it was still evil.

I really love the duo of D&D. I never knew Drusilla could fight this well, nothing from her previous appearances indicated that at all. As it was teased earlier in the season, Angel doesn't need a soul to do bad things and after all the prodding from W&H, he finally played their game and embraced the darkness.

A newborn vampire is an emotionaless drone until they get to feed for the first time. Then, and only then, does their true vampire personality emerge. You saw that in this episode with Darla, and you also saw this before in the first season episode The Prodigal, with Angel himself in the flashback when he rose from his grave and had to feed on that cemetery grave digger before he came to his senses.

It's probably due to perspective of having seen the whole show a handful of times, but I have a different take about Lindsey's apathy in face of near death here. I believe that from the moment he chose to stay at W&H at the end of 1x21, he was somehow conscious that this could happen, that one of the monster they used may turn against them. Plus losing his hand may also have made him think about the eventuality of death. I don't see him being especially into being killed or turn into a vampire, rather than just having already accepted the idea of it.

It's so interesting to watch the series now, 20 years later, as I watched it for the first time. Back then, I was very often angry at Angel and Buffy for many of their actions. Now I understand them in many ways. That 's Joss 's talent . He shows not cardboard characters, but real people with their strengths and weaknesses. So you just can't fall in love with these characters and worry about their fate with all your heart.

I don't think there's any particular advantage in powers from a vampire being older. There is a huge darwinian selection with them though, in that the weaker and stupider don't last as long before getting staked or whatever. They don't arise from their graves as martial arts champions immediately. Except for Dracula. He's got additional powers compared to everyone else Angel the show introduced the idea that vampires are immune to falling damage, although it's not clear whether or not Angel can fly fully.

The class of Darla cracked me up. How a soul works is one of the biggest debates in the Buffyverse fandom. There are many opinions, but this is now I see it: The soul: It doesn't necessarily make you a good person, it just gives a person the capability of being so. Soulless: It doesn't mean a person cannot be and/or do good things or not feel emotions of good. It just means the drives of someone without a soul (including said positive emotions and actions) will be based on the negative aspects of a person from when they had a soul. This is the first time the Buffyverse gets into details of how the technicalities of creating vampires work rather than Buffy saying to Giles, "To make you a vampire they have to suck your blood. And then you have to suck their blood. It's like a whole big sucking thing." Although in this case some of it could easily be the inner-workings of Drusilla's ritualistic mind. 11:55-12:08: Technically there isn't much else to do when faced with a newly turned vampire who hasn't yet fed. I remember the creator saying he was going to have Angel save the lawyers unwillingly before realizing the "darkness" storyline they were working towards was at the point where he wouldn't save them and with that he also had to have Angel fire the group.

That's sort of how I take the soul in the Buffyverse as well- it gives you the capacity to be good- you still have to make the choice to do it. Note that the stuff Dru does in this episode is not necessary to make a vampire- the bloodsharing seems to be all that's strictly required. IIRC Angel describes it as ritual. But Dru is the sort of vampire who's into that, apparently.

You can tell how amazing an episode is when I realise I keep having to rewind cos I've stopped watching Alley's reaction and am focusing too much on the clip. Even in its tiny form on the screen 😅

In the lore of the Buffyverse vamps get stronger the older they get. Something about the demon growing in power with age. Which is why the oldest ones we've seen can't even make themselves look human anymore. It's all very fuzzy though, and more often than not the answer is vamps are exactly as strong as the plot requires them to be.

I personally don't thunk Angel felt responsible for Darla being brought back, I think he's aware enough to put that on WRH who are actually responsible. And with Cordy not having a vision in awhile, I think it makes it all the more the point that the PTB sent the the vision to prevent him from chasing after Darla and Drusilla and veering of course. He is soppose to help the helpless more or less not punish the guilty or the evil that Darla and drusilla represent. The interesting thing is by the time he catches up with them it doesn't matter because he let's them continue to kill everyone which is exactly what would have happened had he not showed up - so you could almost argue it was meant to happen regardless. Is it morally wrong? Sure. There's a lot of great arguments to support that. However, That line about how "you don't qualify" and earlier content about how WR&H employees sold there souls kind of made sense to me in my younger years because I didn't think they had souls to save 🤷‍♀️ All great stuff! And yes, Drusilla is Queen!

This is the episode that solidified my opinion that the Powers That Be are evil. Angel had the opportunity to stop Dru and Darla before they could start their little murder spree, but instead the PTBs send Cordy a vision to stop some random guy from committing suicide. Two or three people commit suicide every day in Los Angels County, but they don’t rate visions. You’d almost think that the PTBs got exactly what they wanted when Angel locked all those lawyers in with D&D.

If you like buffy and angel, you should check out Grimm. I think two of the producers from buffy and angel worked on it and it is really good. And is not just a copy of the buffy verse. It's original and unique in its own way. Well worth checking out.

About the "different personality" thing, Darla really didn't seem happy to have been turned into a vampire at first, and the last thing she decided before being forcibly turned was to die as a human...

You know, it's really a pity that we did NOT get a Darla/Drusilla spin-off. But then, I guess you can't have the bad guys as your protagonists. Or at least you couldn't back then. And of course we're not done with them on Angel yet anyway. Sigh.

18:13 This is the emergence of Angel's third persona, it's not remorseful Angel or soulless Angelus. This is Dark Angel. 51:13 Please don't! Holland Manners is not the boss, not even of the LA branch of Wolfram & Hart.

Some other comments have mentioned it, but just to reiterate, baby vamps being "stronger" is almost exclusively a Twilight thing. In basically every other vampire setting/mythos/pop culture older=stronger. Just another reason so many of us hate Twilight.

In my own head canon, I think Dru, while going along with Wolfram and Hart, isn't really fooled by them. She wants to help Darla and works with them but I think she was very aware of how they were using Darla. Maybe my favourite episode of Angel so far and Dru fits into Angel the series very well. It's also the most physical we've seen Dru.

I don't think she was fooled for a second. Her psychic abilities and intuition let her see so clearly even if her mental illness sometimes makes it difficult to communicate or act effectively on her knowledge. When she does though she's pretty damn calculating and scary.

I agree with you. I think she might have seen this as a chance to free Darla from what wolfram and hart is doing to her. I think it was also a way for Dru to try to rebuild part of her “family”, sort of a 2 in 1 action for her.

I don't think they could have gotten any Vampire, they needed one that would turn her not just kill her. Because to turn someone into a vampire the Vampire drinks their blood until they're nearly dead then they get the human to drink their blood so a random Vampire could stop at part one and just leave Darla dead.
