A lot of comments on here showing how distrustful people are of Kier Starmer and co... I get it but if you think for a minute - what kind of power must be arrayed against him? The 0.00001% who are desperate to continue the status quo for as long as possible, they'll be cutting his balls off left right and centre. He has to be smart, smarter than we can possibly imagine - he has to think of the long game and play every move right. I too wish he appeared more confident - I wish he was the lion we all want - like Mick Lynch AND I wish they'd supported the pickets BUT... I'm also prepared to watch and wait because I know the reality of his position is tough. He's trying to turn a corrupt ship around but it'll take time AND cunning to beat the establishment. I first came across Kier Starmer in a little documentary called McLibel - it's free on youtube. It's about a postman and a gardener who took on McDonalds and won. Kier Starmer helped them as a young lawyer. He did it for free and stuck with them through the whole process all the way to taking the UK government itself to court because the libel laws in the UK are unjust. So... I have no doubt his heart is in the right place - but the powers that be are just that, powerful, clever and manipulative. I think we should give him a chance... We all want Labour to jump up and start championing the working man but we saw what happened when Corbyn did that - the right wing oligarch owned press immediately jumped on him as a communist etc... I think Kier is playing a waiting game - a smart game. He knows that the rightwing press are ready to jump on his every move. OR... he IS a coward and I'll be the first to shout that out if he disappoints us. All I'm saying is we gotta give him a chance.
@davidbates30578 ай бұрын
Many of us have given Starmer a chance, and unfortunately he's come to show that there's a reason he has a "Sir" tacked onto the front of his name. For me, it's not necessarily his political stances that are concerning, but more about what he's doing behind the scenes, such as cutting out proven good Labour MPs and Councilers, or having one of the worst expenses claims, one that in four short years is currently higher than all four leaders of the party going back to Blair had combined in all their years in office, and rivals the worst Tories have put out. Had the talking points of the party been what Rayner laid out here, Starmer wouldn't be getting any of the stick he is today. Which begs the question, why the sudden change? If his acting like a Cameran Tory to date was all 10D political chess to get the right wing press on side, how is it Rayner came out and set this speech out when the election hasn't even been called? Are the right-wing press just going to ignore this, because let's be real, had this come out in Corbyn's leadership we'd be getting across the board headlines of the country being driven towards Communism for the next month. I mean she stated putting mental health on par with physical, yet only last week the shadow minister for mental health quit over it not being any priority for Starmer. This sudden worker's rights speech also ties in with a number of baffling videos from the New Statesman, a traditionally Tory-lite Neo-Liberal outlet, also calling for "radical" Labour policy to tackle the crisis the country is in. I want to believe what Rayner is saying here is reality -- I genuinely do -- but they've damaged their reputation so badly in the past few years that the cynic in me is saying the party is now in a place where the establishment is happy it won't be a threat in any way and so they are happy to put out the soundbites to grift the working class into voting them into office at the next election.

I'm not an apologist, I'm an optimist. It would be pretty miserable if labour and conservatives were the same as Democrat and Republican - i.e. two sides of the same coin. When Obama got elected everyone felt so hopeful for a moment but in the end he was the same if not worse... a massive sell out. All I'm saying is that until they're in power I'm prepared to see what plays out. We've all heard parties promising the earth before elections - the manifestos that turn out to be empty air and not worth the paper they're printed on... Rayner has done more to sell Labour as a credible government in the last 48 hours than the party as a whole has done in it's entire time since Starmer took over. Let's just hope that this all isn't something that a few negative headlines in the press will result in a media scrum of backtracking two weeks from now with claims that as much as they want to help workers, we have to prioritise getting inflation down. Or worse, what with seeing the likes of the New Statesman all of a sudden calling for a radical Labour agenda, that this isn't all a cynical ploy to get working votes onside now that the establishment is confident Labour is fully prepared to take over and continue the Tory agenda in their name.

Yeah... made me sad too. But lions aren't born in a day... maybe Kier is slowly feeling stronger - I can't imagine the powers arrayed against those who want to change the status quo. If you want to know what kind of person Kier is watch the film 'mclibel' he was a young man - he helped a post office worker and gardener take on McDonalds. He did it for free - and they won. It's full on David and Goliath and well worth a watch if you haven't seen it. So, I don't doubt his heart is in the right place... I just wish he had more courage but hopefully that will come in time as he builds confidence. I'm happy to see what happens next...

"This government has turned it's back on our economy" - I understand this is Politics (capital P). However, why do they always think people are dumb enough to believe these one liners? Do I really believe the 20,000 permanent staff employed at Whitehall & BoE have somehow decided to ignore the countries' economic prosperity? No, i dont. Do i think we need bold policy to break out of low growth cycle, which has been exacerbated by Brexit? Absolutely, but that's a much more intricate train of thought than her statements.

0 hour contacts are really handy for certain workers.
@iskrajackal90498 ай бұрын
@wendywolfman Really??? For example? Can't see how. Zero hours is not the worker deciding to take time off without much notice, which is just having a flexible boss. ZH is the boss denying you a full week of employment some weeks, with little or no notice, against your will. It leaves you unable to budget or plan, and forever fearful in a precarious so-called 'job'. It was only invented for director-level roles, and intensely remunerative temporary roles, not for bar staff, cleaners and other low paid positions.
