wonderful! My favorite yard sale treasure is to get an "experienced" sewing box. It is fascinating to see what other women placed in their boxes. I had to stop going to these sales as I was getting out of control so I assured my husband I would no longer buy any sewing goods but I would appreciate it if he would grab me some interesting findings. The next week he brought me home yards upon yards of french cotton laces still on their retail racks from Martha Pullen, the entire batch for $5 along with an antique sewing box filled with treasures that I gifted to my adult daughter who quilts. The very tiny buttons, usually mother of pearl, were used for baby clothes and are still in demand for custom made christening gowns and slips as well as coming home from the hospital baby gowns created by hand (primarily) done in the heirloom style with french seams and hand made button holes or loops, and embellished with generous amounts of french lace. These items are so much fun to sew, the tiny hand stitching is relaxing. They also work for making clothes for antique collectors dolls which I do make by hand and sell, another relaxing hobby that brings in $$$ for what amounts to bits and bobs of laces and silks, constructed for models that stand perfectly still and offer no opinions as to the style.

Please, PLEASE, keep giving us little videos like this one. I happy dance in my chair when I see super bargains and rescued gems from yesteryear. I inherited several boxes of crewelwork yarn and embroidery floss from my grandmother and I never stopped to think of the boxes themselves. See that? You taught an old lady something about perspective. Good on you! And thank you for it. About that lace: some of it is much older than you realize. I inherited a bankers box and a half of lace that belonged to my great-grandmother and her mother and her grandmother. My great-grandmother was born in 1901. Some of your laces are very similar to hers. The handmade ones are from her mother and grandmother. You struck pure gold with those, especially since you already make vintage clothing. I love all that you found, but my favorite part is that you stuck to your instincts and didn't just buy the pattern weights on eBay. Instead, you waited and it paid off. Two sets, plus a load of thread, for half the price of one set! My favorite button has to be the mother of pearl leaf. I am a sucker for mother of pearl. I look forward to the whimsical outfits you make with the shaped buttons.

It was so fascinating to see the lace the previous owner made as well as the lace ribbon she used to make that piece! What a neat bit of someone’s sewing history you now own. It’s good that something someone handmade will continue to be used in a new way and be truly appreciated!

I've never been to an estate sell, but people in my area (small villages, everybody knows evrybody ^^), do know I'm sewing and knitting, so I have a bunch of things coming from "it belonged to my mother/grandmother/great-great-aunt, it's in my basement for years, I'm not using it, so take it". I always feel very touched when I'm using those materials, given that the have a real history, and I'm always tring to figure out was it was ment for in the first place. I think the lady who passed away would be very pleased to see her items in your hands !

Those tins are lovely. SO MUCH THREAD! Wow. You need to some super elaborate, over-the-top, colorful, shiny, metallic...thing. I don't know what. LOL! I've never been to an estate sale, but my aunt has been cleaning out her mother-in-laws house, so I have been gifted some of her sewing supplies. Vintage metal zippers, miles of bias binding, grommets & snaps & closures. And over 120+ spools of thread. I won't have to go shopping for notions for a LONG time, thanks to "Grandma" Kay.

The tins are dated 1988, but I've seen similar tins in Jo-anns - I think they re-released them! And I agree, I need to do something involving shiny embroidery. I've had a similar experience with my great aunt and grandparents...I'm the new home for all the sewing stuff they no longer use lol!

That is handmade tatted lace! The hours that had to have gone into making it!!! (The green and ivory lace) Also here is a fabulous blog post about what tatting is: medium.com/re-form/fifty-three-thousand-knots-one-mans-journey-into-the-craft-of-tatted-lace-deefb55795f3 I tried to pick it up about 13 years ago and didn't have the follow through once I realized how long it would take to make an inch of lace. (Still have the tools as I am not quite ready to fully give up yet.)

Non-washable buttons can be applied by sewing the shank to a standard plain button and using 2 holes in the garment that make a lapped closure. Then the buttons can be easily removed and preserved during the wash.

Fabulous haul. The cotton lace at 14:48 is Irish crochet lace. Probably late 1900s or early 20th century. Very few people know how to make it now, but there are a few teachers and self-taught enthusiasts, like myself. The tape lace is fantastic too.

My favorite find was at an estate auction I went to last summer. The person had collected buttons from the 18th, 19th, and early 20th century, and mounted them on comic book cards by type or era. I walked away with about 1/2 of the cards. They are phenomenal to look at. My favorite are the calico buttons that are so colorful and dainty looking.

That was heavenly. I purchased an entire business off a lady who had not cleaned out anything in the twenty years of working. My husband wanted to get a skip and just chuck everything. I protested loudly and said, No way, there are far to many treasures buried in there. Sorting the buttons took me hours and hours. But it was so much fun. As was the lace, and the fabric. It was almost my favourite part, rather than doing the dress making and alterations for clients.

I used to create what I termed goddess gowns using recycled materials - vintage petticoats made ankle length, dyed then decorated with lace and with sew on jewels or flowers. I sold these at craft markets and the local library hosted a wearable art exhibition. The ladies who worked in the Op Shops (charity shops) in the region loved what I was doing and would put all the vintage laces, ribbons, notions and slips aside for me. I'd visit every few months and often picked up huge boxes of exquisite vintage trims - the pleated trims were my faves - that they would sell me for perhaps $10 for the whole box. Most were from the 30s to 50s. Not quite an estate sale. More the estate ending up at the Op Shop. Ten years on, I still have stacks of this stuff left. My other fave was vintage crocheted tablecloths. A round one with a small hole in the middle, elastic and a tub of dye makes a really stunning long circle skirt that people will stop you in the street to admire. Oblong ones make stunning coats dyed in rainbow colors. Or cut one up and sew pieces onto a slip to make a beautiful and unique dress.

There was a lot of lace in a short time. WOW. There was Battenberg lace, entredeux, beading lace to insert ribbons through, cotton laces for heirloom sewing popular in the 90's. I missed the hand tatted lace. But I thought I saw hand crocheted lace. Both have been known to last generations, transferred from one garment to another as styles change and fabrics wear out. Another resource of findings is to attend estate auctions. Domestics are auctioned later in the day when the lawn tractors and snow blowers are gone. They are auctioned by the box, much like a grab bag. Such fun. I've done some machine embroidery... the trick is to use the appropriate needle. Please keep posting. I am inspired by your creativity. I haven't ever gone to an estate sale to find sewing supplies. But I did inherit a lot from my grandmother who was a professional seamstress for a time. My aunt let me go through a bunch of her stuff and I ended up with a box of lace, a box of buttons, a box of bias tape and zippers, more snaps and hooks and eyes than I will ever need, some amazing gingher scissors and pinking shears, a whole lot of ribbon, and, my personal favorite, a singer featherweight sewing machine from 1939. All for free. It was one of the best days because I got so much cool stuff, and it made me feel that much closer to my grandma ♡

You did not like the entre-nous lace? If you ever get into French heirloom hand sewing entre-nous will be your favorite friend. To clean the lace I would suggest using Joy dish soap or Synthapol this is what most museums use. Oh! all those fine cotton French lace's! I am jealous! Once the lace is clean and dry wrap it on acid-free card stock to prevent re-staining. You have some nice English lace too. Wow! What a boon!

I just went to an estate sale and got a LOT of sewing supplies. But my favorite was the 50s(??) hair dryer. The hair dryer is tucked away inside the box. Outside of the box is a spot to dry nails, and the dial for the settings!! Will look so cool on my bookshelf!

The lace... oh, the lace! So beautiful.. but how do you clean it without destroying it? Would love to see how you do that.

A lot of lace is made of pretty sturdy stuff - most can take a few dips in oxi-clean which do a world of good!

Maybe it could be basted to lightweight cotton or even tulle, washed in a garment bag, then air dried and pressed.

Love the wide lace. That is my favourite and would be great for christening gowns. My best finds lately is fabric I have purchased online from Fabric Mart. You have directed me to that site and have purchased twice and still I have not made anything with them. I think I know what I am going to make but also need to find the time. You have been an inspiration for me. Thanks.

Great finds! You have found a number of laces used in heirloom sewing. There are some marvelous books out there with patterns and techniques for shaping. Think christening gowns and delicate lingerie! Also, I recognize many of those buttons from the 80’s / 90’s when I was sewing for my daughters. Daisy Kingdom had a lot of patterns out then that used decorative buttons.

How fun! I can’t believe you resisted the fabric AND the sewing machines! I don’t think I could have, if I had had the cash on hand. Can’t wait to see what you make with this! I liked the buttons. Weird I know. The Halloween funky buttons are always a fave for me. Anything Halloween actually. I think I saw a bat button? Love bats. Yeah. I’m weird. Haha! Good score!
