Hyram lost me when he said that you can "cure" your eczema, it's a condition that comes and goes for life and is usually connected to your immune system.

Honestly I feel like the market is over saturated. There’s simply too many celebrity/influencer skincare brands. And with skincare, people are more educated so they know that they can get a cheaper product with similar ingredients.
@joelle2497
@joelle2497 Жыл бұрын
Exactly, and there’s nothing “new” that can really come out with skin care like with makeup. With make up, you can always establish a new routine with trying new looks, when new shades of thing come out, etc. But with skincare, as you as you have a routine down and find the basic things you need, there isn’t really new stuff to find.

Hyram was always a baffling phenomenon to me: he just copied Paula’s Choice and Dr. Dray’s information on skincare and sprinkled it with his own misinformation, both because at the end of the day he wasn’t a skincare expert nor tried to learn about it, and because he accepted sponsorships that made him spew fearmongering nonsense. Never clicked with me, I tried for a couple of months during the hype but I just couldn’t. And I can’t understand how everyone so quickly forgave Patrick Starr when he was, live on Instagram, tongue-kissing another influencer during a covid party just to show off some twisted kind of privilege. All that blatant lack of care, the need to show off some weird exclusivity that spews classism and self-entitlement while so many were dying and we were all locked in our homes… That is a piece of human garbage. People can grow and learn, but I can’t look past it. Yet he launched his brand, and I constantly see influencers mentioning or trying One Size… Not my thing. The same as NikkieTutorials coming out supporting James Charles - even if it’s just a nice comment on his launch. As much as I support raising voices for the trans community, someone who publicly sides with a Pred for views is off my list. Don’t know when the beauty community decided to start forgiving James Charles, but it’s not our place to accept his half-hassled apologies… Looking back, the Morphe crew and adjacent big influencers were always a group I never paid much attention to. I tried for a while with some of them but their personalities didn’t jive with me, something felt too fake and pushy. And turns out they were mostly crappy people, so, as much as I still waste time on the internet, I’m glad I didn’t contribute for those ranks.

I disagree about why Hyram's brand is struggling. His selfless brand was promoted with greenwashing and had white savior optics. In the past, he had bashed both practices (as he should) but then did it anyway. I also recall there was a bit of hypocrisy involving some of the ingredients. For instance, he had been clocked saying one of the ingredients lacked the efficacy to be the focus of a product while reviewing a brand, but then a few months later made it the focus of one of his products. This may have been the red algae. The price point was also quiet high for what you got. He'd criticized brands in similar price points with similar ingredients in the past. So a lot of hypocrisy. Also, his "skincare specialist" tag ended up being highly misleading. It was intentionally misleading. It's been a while since I've watched his content, but this is what I remember. Any one of these is enough of a reason for someone to walk, but all of it was a lot.

Oh and there was something about donating a percent of the sales, but the website was unclear about how much would be donated despite using this donation in advertisements. Or was this a fever dream?
@morgianasartre6709

Honestly I don't think Hyram is that passionate about skincare anymore, he has his coffee brand now and the podcast which has nothing to do with skin. His content was becoming quite repetitive and I'm guessing he just felt that he has done all he could in the sphere given his limitations in knowledge, he can't really compete in the long run with creators whose content is based in ther professional expertise without just copying them and repachaging their info the way he had always done with Dr Dray (by his own admission).

i think a huge limitation with Nymya is the fact that it's not available in A LOT of countries due to formulas. I still cant get it where I love because of approvals. I think if she had marketed herself towards makeup more instead of base first, it would have given her the opportunity to be able to ship internationally right away, and then go into skin care.

As a Dutch person I keep seeing NikkiTutorials more on TV (shows and programs), opposed to her being an influencer and make up artist. That combined with the fact she has some not-so-stellar opinions and hyping up some questionable (allegedly) people just makes me look at her and go :\

Hyram’s brand flop is surprising to me, though I never considered buying it. I was personally turned off by all the hype around how eco friendly it was, when it’s clearly just another brand filled with plastic packaging that none of us really *need*. I was also surprised at how unattractive the packaging was? I imagine that made it less likely to get picked up off shelves

Be careful with those one size trio blushes. I went to buy Fire Starter during the sale. I couldn’t find it on Sephora because it was unlisted. But I found it at a Sephora inside Kohl’s. The one I bought had hair and mold/bacteria in it. I took it back to exchange and the exact same thing. I’m guessing that’s why it was pulled off Sephora

One size is popping at Sephora tbh. I work in a small store, have seen a lot of new launches - many don't survive more than 6 months, but one size kicked out dinosaurs like clinique and smashbox. I thought it would be a flop when he launched wipes and oil cleanser but he has a lot of staples at this point. Liqid liners are literally the best (I'm a liquid liner connoisseur), setting sprays and powders are pretty good. Lip liners are pretty decent and same price as sephora collection. Concealers are good. Eyeshadow glitter toppers are good, wish there would be more crazy shades. Blushes arent my favorite formula, but still decent. Smart branding, good price point, not much focus on Patrick. I think its a big deal to have the same size gondola as ABH in about a year without being super viral.

That narrative about inclusive brands is complete bull..... Its ok to want many different shades from established big brands, but start ups just cant afford to make 30 shades of which 20 most likely wont sell at all. It just shows how little so called "Influencers" actually know about business in the "real" world. Why should an asian Beauty brand start out with 20 shades when 95% of their potential buyers use like 5 shades top.

I enjoyed Hyram as a person, although I never watched his videos regularly. I'm just not interested in influencer or celebrity skincare or make-up in general. With a few exceptions, most influencers are simply putting their names on products. I don't believe they're using these products or are actually involved in their creation. The biggest issue for me is that I love & use The Inky List & Hyram never distinguished his line from them.

I mean so many of the influencer brands in Sephora don't come to Sephora Australia but we do get One Size, so it seems more like its like a proper brand rather than Item beauty which we never got at all (if any of that makes sense). I feel like the blush trios do seem to sell out in certain shades etc & seem to sell pretty well. I feel like it does better than it seems it does, because it is sold internationally.
