Thanks for another fine reaction to an Angelina performance. Confession time. I'd never heard of Macy Gray, so had to search and find her KZbin website. Listened to several of her songs and, yes, she is an excellent jazz singer. However, I didn't recognise any of the songs. I put her on my "Listen to this singer" list and will spend more time with her over the coming weeks.

Angelina is not just "singing" that song. The least we could be justified to say is that she "feels" it. Could we say more? Yes, she sings it "in the spirit". For that, she must find, not in her body instrument nor in her mind and emotions, i.e. in her soul, but, farther therein, in her spirit, the essence of the song. I that sense, although she is not exploring yet the "negro spirituals" genre of music, she is, in some songs, venturing into her "singing in the spirit" vocal art ability, when appropriate. For me, these type of songs are, therefore, her "spiritual songs". What I find amazing (and unique for a young artist) is that she can easily, by closing her eyes, dive in her spirit and come out of it, to follow the lyrics, for instance, and perfectly perform like if it were as simple as breathing.

I never noticed before but I think she’s playing the piano whilst she’s singing. She’s done this before in at least Wicked Game and Love on The Brain. I’m not sure you’ve done Love on The Brain, but I recommend it. There’s enough vocal fry to cook a full English breakfast.

Angelina posted this just a few days after the death of Aretha. That's a very good call about Macy Gray. I agree that Angelina's version of this song is how Macy would sing it. You missed the end of the song where Angelina fades to black in respect for the passing of Aretha. Even as a child, she remains such a classy person. And actually, Angelina's performance is my favorite on this classic Carol King song.
