Amazing that she's only 12 here .. this was before AGT. She never ceases to amaze me. I Thank you for hearing the whole thing before your full comments. (Confession .. this is probably at least the 25 th time I've heard this .. and most of her songs .. for a full- on confession😊) I like reminding reactors of her age. 12! The special thing about Angelina Jordan is that her songs are not all that intellectual. She was only about 13 when she sang this song. When they listen to this song, many people forget this is not just a cover but a tribute to Whitney Houston after her death. Angelina was honoring Whitney Houston by showing what she loves about the singer and at the same time gently adding what she thought would improve the song. In my opinion, there was a wistfulness about the song and certain moments that illustrates how she loves Whitney Houston’s music and how she was sad that Whitney Houston is no longer here to hear this rendition of the song.

I really like your professional analysis of Angelina. You seem to catch a lot of those little things that make her so special. As you said, this is outside of Angelina's normal style. You can tell when you listen to this one that she was really testing the boundaries and pushing against them. She seems to be someone that is constantly growing, and constantly challenging herself to expand her abilities. I think nobody gets as good as she is without going outside the comfort zone often. Interesting side note... a few weeks after this video was published, Angelina was singing this song with David Foster (the guy that wrote it for whitney) accompanying her on keyboard when they were working together on a charity event. You asked about her original and new stuff...... The new album that she is working on (under Republic Records) is moving slow this year because of the pandemic, but I would expect something by early 2021. Angelina has 5 original songs published in the last couple years. 3 are her original works, and 2 are songs written by other artists specifically for her vocals. As a musician who is most decidedly NOT a singer, it is so interesting to hear the comments of a musician AND very accomplished singer who picks up all the details that are lost on most. Thank you! For me, this is one of Angelina Jordan’s most impressive performances, precisely because she steps out of her comfort zone, yet bravely goes all in and does an amazing job. Everyone who has heard just a few of her songs knows she can sing the jazz standards brilliantly. But who knew she could combine that rich tone, beautiful low register and huskiness with belting out these high notes - and move so effortlessly between the styles that they gel instead of jar? So no, belting up high is not what she does BEST, but she does it damn well!

Always great to see you react to her. Yes, belting is not her strong suit. But I love her fearlessness. I think belting works best on her cover of The Show Must Go On. Lately I've been really loving her take on Happier (like so many others she picks, a great song). She did apparently have an album of originals, but that might be on hold now that she signed with Republic. I have noted else where that the jazz greats that inspired her recorded very few songs they wrote. Others have pointed out the Linda Ronstadt and others make fine careers out of covers. We'll see.

Norwegians give their children a teaspoon of “Talent Syrup” once a week. Angelina must have found few bottles and overdosed on them. LOL After turning many lucrative offers from many major labels as well as Disney over the last few years, Angelina signed with Republic Records as their “highest priority new artist”. She announced about a year ago that she was working on an Album of all original songs, then came the pandemic and things slowed down. Hopefully it will be released soon. Very well done, Caleb. I am sure you also noted that she was a little tight just before she went up on that high note you highlighted. She knew exactly how much she had to give that higher switch and note, just about her everything, and just for a second was too tight on the build-up to it. But all in all this performance is outstanding, coming from a girl just turned 13, also being outside her comfort zone. It is really well done. Thx for this interesting reaction, that's a completely new view on this song. Most vocal coaches only focused on watching if she can reach the high notes required in this song so far. It's also my impression she's looking for challenges. While we are still waiting (impatiently) for any news on the new album, she did some originals you didnt cover yet: "Oslo" and "What is Life?". She also did some excursions through collaborations with Nico Cartosio (Song for A) and TRXD (Above the water, EDM) which both are original songs. Technically you could also call her cover of "Back to Black" an original, since she replaced the lyrics. According to the story her mum gave her an ultimatum to replace the text or forget the song. She had only one day to do that.

I think even we untrained, amateur voice critics understand that Angelina is out of her comfort zone here. I still enjoyed this, even though I like classic Angelina best. In just about any Angelina performance what’s remarkable is her calmness, ease, and relaxation. You watch, listen, and wonder because the amazing performances seem to be effortless to her. On this song, you could tell she was reaching. I think this performance is exactly as advertised: a tribute to Whitney. Yes, kudos to Angelina for her adventurousness Both Shield and What is Life are great songs that Angelina wrote. Try one of those, both for the musical talent and for the amazing emotional depth of thought behind the lyrics. Or, if you want to see Angelina stretching her zone unbelievably, watch I’d Rather Go Blind. It’s an Angelina you’ve never heard (or expected) and one, I’m sure, you’ll never hear again. I think you hit what amazes me about Angelina when you mentioned the "autotune" fad at the end. Just about all of her videos are, essentially, live performances. One take, no do-overs, no autotune. Just Angelina stepping up to a microphone and delivering the goods, with all their perfect imperfections.

Angelina's first attempt at a Whitney cover was at the age of 18 months! before her Grandma introduced her to Jazz! She tries many styles of singing and shares these raw performances with us all. As far as I am aware she has only 3 original songs: What is life Oslo Sheild. I understand that she started putting together an album of original songs (after AGT champions) but the pandemic has caused a pause as she lives in L.A. and the studio is in New York. I guess that in normal circumstances she would have launched the album with a concert tour...

Whether there may have been one or two technical issues throughout the entire song, Angelina demonstrated her biggest strength in conveying emotion. Her body movements, her hand gestures, her holding her hand over her heart, and looking at the camera at times, made it feel like she was singing it to you directly. Furthermore, at only 12 or 13 years old here, she is conveying those emotions as if she has lived and experienced them. I will never get over how she has that ability to project feelings that she has not experienced in life.

And, if she chooses, it will be even better in 5-10 years. I don't need perfection. I want connection to the song. if you listen to the whitney original she does the same inflections or bends in those high notes. if you take out what sounds like a bit of straining, it no longer sounds like an rnb, soul, jazz singer, it sounds like a pop singer. the more i listen to it the more i think it is basically perfect.

For a 13-year-old -- this performance is incredible. Most adult professional singers would not even attempt to sing this song -- it is too technically complex in range. Someone composed a side-by-side recording of both Angelina and Whitney singing this song together, and I was shocked that they were almost identical. Crazy, considering when Whitney sang this she was around 29 with a much more mature and developed vocal ability, and that has to be programmed into the assessment. It is really important to remember that she is probably an alto. Although this song makes me wonder if she is a mezzo, actually. However, of course it would be easier for a soprano to reach those insane notes. But would they be able to reach the low notes like Angelina does in the Adele renditions?

Wow, Caleb -- what a great reaction. "Outside her comfort zone" is exactly right. AJ does push the high notes, particularly when she was really belting. She does in fact waver sometimes. But what an enormously brave performance for someone who's 13. The confidence it takes to perform "I Have Nothing" -- as a tribute to one of the most accomplished popular vocalists in history (Whitney is underappreciated for her articulation and breath control vs. her range and volume) -- is just exceptional. That was a wonderful analysis thank you.I noticed that a few times she turns towards the camera and away from the mic which changes the volume and fullness of the tone.I also think that her humility actually works to her benefit in the sense that she doesn't try to ousing any artist that she covers,hence she always sounds like Angelina.

I think perhaps Angelina's "tribute" to Whitney here was to sing Whitney's song pretty much Whitney's way (of course, with a few AJ flavors and spices added in). Going somewhat out of her comfort zone with a one take, raw, unprocessed "here it is" delivery is quite a tribute. And it also answers a question on another side of what AJ can deliver when she wants, when she "ain't playin".

Try her live version of "It's a man's world". Just the idea of the same young lady covering Whitney Houston and James Brown is unbelievable but then recognize she has covered 60+ of the best vocalists of the last hundred years and you just gotta say how and wow !!

Interesting, this is one of a few difficult songs that she really belted out and sounds really fantastic. There are a few more songs like that she really belted, "This is a man's world" & "Nothing breaks like a heart" are other ones I know. Coming to her compositions as requested, there are a few I know, "shield", "what's life", "I am still holding out for you". Not sure which ones you might have covered.... God bless take care

Welcome back Caleb, I've missed your AJ reactions! Could you help me? A couple of music experts say that she misses a couple of notes during her belting phase of this song. For the life of me I can't identify where this happened. Did u notice these missed notes? Also, we need to remember she's only 13 here...

Hi. Yeah her pitch was little off during the section I replayed at 10:48 - 10:54 . Particularly the 'My arms' are both a little off. But like I said, I really appreciated that she went for it rather than playing it safe. And I agree, to do so well at such a young age when she is out of her comfort zone is pretty awesome.

@@kevingood4644 I am from the U.S. but my husband and I retired in the Philippines, and I listen to many ladies here in the Philippines sing this song and for some reason, it is just easy for them (even teenagers) you know they could even do more. For me, I don't always notice a pitch being a little off but I am able to tell on this song she is reaching her limit, she is at a wall. When you hear the song a lot and it is done with ease that is where I notice a difference. I never like it when someone recommends this song to a new reactor even though I believe she did a great job on it, it is just not her strength. It is ok for someone like Caleb who knows her strengths. She is the best jazz and blues singer I have ever heard in my life. I am positive she will be making music in her strengths maybe a jazz-pop (Bohemian Rhapsody) sound I also loved her country-pop (Nothing Breaks Like A Heart), also love the gospel sound that she did in (Somethings Got A Hold On Me). Whatever she does I am sure it will be fabulous.
