Now you've seen some of the beginnings of Angelina Jordan, the Barefoot Princess ,from Norway's Got Talent to America's Got Talent, and this performance, 9 year old Angelina doing this classic in her very own way. The original was by Screamin' Jay Hawkins, the guy pictured on the candle Angelina was holding at the beginning. She changed it drastically, and in my opinion improved it. Angelina does have some of Nina Simone's qualities in her voice through her musical journey, and many others as well, but Angelina is Angelina most of all, and her timbre, breathiness, velvet tones, amazing range (her vocal "instrument" is quite remarkable), her growls, rasp, all of it presents a very unique tone, a throwback in some respects to golden eras, sassiness, attitude, twang, you get it all with her. Thank you for going down this Angelina road. You will not be disappointed with where she was at the beginning, where she went, and in particular where she is now as a 17-year old diva, may I say, who just dropped her own EP a few days ago. I have enjoyed your reactions, the goosebumps and stirrings Angelina always evokes in us. She is mesmerizing, hypnotizing at any age.

Having listened to both Screamin’ Jay and Nina Simone do this song, Angelina’s version made so much more sense. It really seems to me that she took elements from both of them - the theatrics of Jay melded masterfully with Nina’s classic jazz. Both are present in AJ’s cover. So good!!

Angelina was 9 years old in this performance - This song was not arranged for her - she wrote the vocal arrangement based on listening to the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version and communicated to the band how she wanted it to be played - in fact, at the beginning of the video you see Angelina writing down some last-minute changes and it is read by the bandleader. You also notice that her own handwritten notes are on the music stand in front of her as she sings. For more insight into how Angelina works, here is a rehearsal video with some of the same band members at the same age (9 yrs old) - You will see that she is aware of what each musician is doing and communicates to them what she wants to do. The first thing she says is that she wants to start, followed by her saying she wants to start over, later she tells the pianist that the key is too low and that she wants to raise it a half-tone, then at the end of the song she changes the ending on the fly. BTW, the person who first wrote and sang this song back in 1956 was Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Many people would go on to record this song, including Nina Simone. But Angelina based her version of his song after him, and yet made it her own. Astounding!

Thank you for featuring Angelina again. I hope you will do many more reactions to her, as she is well worth every nanosecond you spend on her. I have watched and listened to her in awe since she released her first video on KZbin, and what has been evident to me from the start is that she sings with total conviction, despite the fact that she is far too young to have experienced the events suggested in the lyrics of the song she has chosen to sing. But it is not only that, for strange as it may seem is the even more remarkable fact that she can convey the appropriate emotions within those lyrics to her listener. This is Angelina's tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956 (50 years before Angelina was born). She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original. There are many things I found particularly worthy of note in this video. Some I recognised immediately and those I missed were brought to my attention by the more observant Angelina fans (her Angels) and I thank them for letting me know what I had missed. Another Angelina "Angel" has pointed out something else which I had missed, and it is added at (l) below, (a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled. (b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers. (c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it. (d) The smile on the face of the Bass player. (e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine" (f) The fact she occasionally refers to her written notes on the music stand. Possibly to remind herself of the last minute changes she wanted. (g) Her unwavering passion throughout the performance. Evidenced by her facial expressions and the way she uses her hands and body to emphasise the direction of the song. (h) The way she takes a breath just before she starts the last phrase (I don't care.....) and that breath lasts the whole of that sustained note. A child of that age should not have the ability to hold a note for that length of time. (i) At the end, when she sings I Doooont Caaaaare, she employs TWO separate and distinct vibratos to the word care, a wide one to start the word and a tighter one to close the word (j) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody. (k) Perhaps the most remarkable is that despite her tender years, she sings with such total conviction that her authenticity is never in doubt. It is easy to believe that she has experienced the events described in the lyrics. It is not only her voice that is mesmerising, it is also her facial expressions, and the way she uses her hands and body. Her stage presence is electrifying. (l) The performance absolutely is powerful and raw but to me, I am amazed that this is balanced by the profound beauty of the ending phrase; the last twelve words of the song. AND… they are essentially sung a cappella! Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.

Alison you I think are the closest reactor I've seen that sctually resembles Angelina a lot ! I can imagine that you looked like her as a child ! Angelina has always had great big hair as so you and its part of her look ! As a jazz singer tou can understand the complexities of what Angelina is demonstrating in taking in this classic jazz song ! She is the combination of Ella Fitzgerald Louis Arsnstrong, Etta James, Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, Adele , Amy Winehouse, Whitney Houston , Elvis Presley and Nora Jones all in one person named Angelina Jordan ! Angelina is known also as the girl with a thousand voices and the queen of jazz! There are no xhild singers who can sing the iconic classic jazz and pop songs of if the 50's & 60's like Angelina ! Sometimes, more on some later songs, she brings to mind another barefoot singer who has covered this song - Joss Stone. Here is a tip, especially regarding her early performances in Norway: ALWAYS play every clip to the very end, and watch her return from her "music mode" (her own world of music that she enters whenever she sings). She quietly changes from the vocal prodigy we just watched, back to being just an unassuming little girl. It is quite apparent in this one. Also, check if English subtitles are available for that clip, the dialog is usually in Norwegian.

Nice reaction, Alison! This is one of the crown jewels of Angelina's early career. She based her arrangement (yes, she arranged it) on Screamin' Jay Hawkins' original, which is very wild. She reined it in a bit and created a miraculous throwback to the early days of blues. One reactor compared her voice on this track to Bessie Smith's, and the comparison holds up. A barefoot princess with a hypnotic voice. She was only 9 years old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, an American singer/songwriter. He wrote and performed it in 1956 and Angelina based her performance on the original, although she did make some subtle alterations to both lyrics and melody. As you continue your journey of discovering Angelina, you will come to realise that she does her own arrangements of most of the cover songs she sings. The differences may not be immediately discernible on first listening to them, but they are there. There may be a subtle change in tempo or tone, or more inflexion on some words, or a phrase may differ in pitch from the original. The amount of control that Angelina has over her voice cannot be measured. She never hurries a song. She sings in such a way that the emotions in the lyrics are felt by the listener. Hi Alison, At age ten Angelina did a cover called 'I've Been Holding Out for You' from a singer called aka Baby Fuzz. A fan put together this leaked video and it wasn't stopped in time because the second part of the song deals with suicide. Angelina's family didn't want her to have anything to do with this subject matter. There was also some dispute with the song writer that she could only put it out as a demo. This is one of Angelina's best early recordings because it starts to show the maturity of her young voice and the way she uses her vocal techniques.

Funny you should say this performance was theatrical. The song was originally by Screaming Jay Hawkins, who was a very theatrical performer, and Angelina is here channelling his version but putting it in her own musical style. Alison, since you love this song, do yourself a favor and react to the original by Screamin Jay Hawkins from 1956. You will appreciate 9 year old Angelina's arrangement that much more. For me, Angelina is the best singer story teller of my 64 years. I recommend you react to The Warning, a rock band comprised of 3 sisters from Mexico, each a true rock prodigy. They went viral at age 13, 11 and 9 with a cover of Metallica's "Enter Sandman". Now at ages 23, 21 and 18 they are recording their 4th album of original music. Yes..There is a 'flow' to any performance and interrupting the performance chops that up...Backing up 5 seconds sort of 'helps" that break in the flow.. For me, I have NEVER heard any reactor have anything to say or to add, nor to have any point that's soooo important or unique that their observation(s) couldn't just as easily have waited (respectfully) until 'after' the artist's performance! Also Angelina wrote a book about being barefoot when she was 9 & It's called “Between Two Hearts ” & she was/is the youngest to be published in Norway.
