Now you know why the Angels are so dedicated. Just start listening to more and you’ll see why she’s The Girl with a Thousand Voices. Contrast this old school blues with her right now: her just released cover of Elvis’s Suspicious Minds will show you how her voice, musicality, and delivery have matured into just mesmerizing talent. It’s a beautiful tribute to Elvis, but like today’s tribute to Screamin Jay Hawkins, it’s all Angelina.

I love this performance so much. As they say AJ don't play. Well perhaps this is what she does when she does play and we get the most stunning, amazing performance of a 9 yr old of this Jazz standard ever created. I believe it is going to go down in Jazz & Music history as the best ever for this age and in my opinion the best rendition of this song ever created Screamin Jay included. It will be revisited for Decades and will remain relevant for Generations to come. Anyone who discovers this performance for the first time today or a 100 years from today are going to be as amazed and astounded as everybody has been to this point. Think of the children who will be inspired by this one performance in the decades to come. This is an Iconic performance and will always be Iconic. Angelina has on her own from early on at 6 or 7 yrs old reintroduced what I believe will be a whole new Jazz Era and redefined by this young phenom and prodigy. That is astounding! And she is just 16 years old... That is unfathomable!... Oh Lord... what is coming the world is not prepared for but we as fans have been on the edge of our seats and will remain there as we wait. No hurry. We want Angelina to do it her way when she is ready. She has already established her proficiency and incredible work ethic in this endeavor guided by an incredible family and professional support now surrounding her. We know Angelina will continue to amaze! We will be here to experience and cherish it for as long as we live.... and I am praying for many more years for myself to enjoy it till the end of my days... I hope to go out of this world listening to the most beautiful voice ever created for man just as Angelina came into it to fulfill her purpose, what she was put on earth to do, sing for the whole World... and Me! To me Angelina is always singing to me transporting me to that beautiful place she inhabits when she sings and to experience it with her. She has the ability to touch hearts and souls and change lives. She has the ability to change lives on a personal level and the power to change lives on a global scale. To me no one compares. You just watched a Masterpiece! Destined to go down in Music History as the best performance by a 9 yr old, Period! Past, present & dare I say Future! I'd like to see anyone, young or old who can do a cover of this & with the justice it deserves as Angelina has done on every cover she does. ♥👣👸🏻

Such a fun ride no matter how many times I watch this! After the first time I checked out the original Hawkins version and was even more blown away by what 9 year old Angelina did here. The original was a wild piece of performance art with elements that Angelina clearly loved and tried to incorporate into the arrangement. The grunts and growls are there, but other sections removed to create a tighter, more melodic song, and in my opinion, the best version of it I have ever heard. A spell indeed! Thanks for the great reaction!

Woohoo! Thanks for the shout-out, YOSC! It really does seem like she transforms when she sings, doesn't it? Angelina based her arrangement on the original by Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who also wrote it (he's the face on the candle at the beginning). You have good instincts; the "hey-hey-hey-hey, watch out!" was borrowed from a performance Jay did on video. I guess the amazing thing about her borrowing it is that she made me believe it. In fact, I consider this performance as on par with other iconic blues songs such as Billie Holiday's cover of I'm A Fool To Want You, or Nina Simone's deliciously subversive take on Feeling Good. Great reaction, YOSC! I'm so glad you enjoyed it.

Angelina brought "Screamin" J. Hawkins back to life in so so many minds around the world with this. In this studio-session she gave it her all. She did it how she realy wanted, and most singing and voice coaches make their point of that this might be harming to her voice if she sing like this a lot. Angelina knew, or at least was was told this. So all of her live versions of this is eased down quite a bit, and are still very nice and impressive. She showes that J Hawkins original version (-s) is the one for her, and she honor him for his work both in this, and in her jam-session with her band, on his song "A portrit of a man", as she rewrote into "A portrait of a child". kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXLOi3d3ja90aqc

I must have listened to Angelina's version of "I Put a Spell on You" at least 100 times along with different Voice professional Reactors, trying to explain how an old Jazz Singer's voice comes out of a little 9-year girl. I think Angelina has a connection with the Jazz Singers from the past given to her at birth, or she has a Time machine. As absurd as either one or the other is, the reality is Angelina's Grandmother Mery Zamani introduced Jazz to Angelina when she was a baby. Mery loved playing Jazz music around Angelina not knowing that she would become a child musical prodigy, Mery was also a child prodigy Artist. The truth is, "The apple never falls far from the tree".

Angelina laid down this track at the tender age of 9 years and 2 months. I have a theory on how this performance came to be. Angelina spent a lot of time on the internet searching for music. Her inspiration for this song, as others have commented, is the performance of the song's originator, Screaming Jay Hawkins (1956). The backstory of the Screaming Jay version of this song can be found on Wikipedia. The story goes that the band got to drinking more than a bit in the recording studio, and led by Screaming Jay, really hammed up the performance. What they delivered was no sultry Nina Simone, jazz love song, which inspired a thousand me-too versions. The Screaming Jay version was "rough trade" rhythm and blues. It was accompanied with totally zany playacting by screaming Jay. That version landed it among the all time top 500 recordings in the Rock-N-Roll Hall Of Fame. You do need to watch Screaming Jay's performance to fully appreciate Angelina's. My take is that Angelina found the Screaming Jay video while she was still an 8 year old, and I expect she found it very funny. It is funny. She really connected with the humor of the performance, and that made her determined to pull a version off her own. If you go back to the beginning of Angelina's video, where she comes out from behind the curtain, where she was standing with her grandmother, she is holding a memorial, or votive, candle with a portrait of Screaming jay Hawkins on it. I read that as Angelina's telling us that this performance is a homage to Screaming Jay. The camera then pans up to Angelina's face where she displays a mischievous grin, That grin is inconsistent with the solemnity of the memorial candle. I think that grin is telling us to watch out because you ain't going to believe what's coming next. I think the whole performance was Angelina having a riotous good time. She was totally serious, while at the same time being completely tongue-in-cheek. Pretty sophisticated for her age, wouldn't you say.
@terryellsworth58482 жыл бұрын
WP that there is some highly elucidating possibilities you throw out there 🤔, but I can buy into a lot of the aspects of AJ's possible live of the humour of Screaming Jay to her 8 year old artistic (Miss Lady Day) mindset and soul that swirled through her then. So yes ... all you conjecture I can imagine some great truths in... and it is quite fun to consider! Cheers 🍻
@dojoswitzer2 жыл бұрын
Not meaning to contradict anything you stated, I suspect that Angelina listened to every cover of IPASOY that she could find and found Hawkins rendition too unrefined and the covers too distant from the original. I also suspect she read the backstory about the writing and original performance. I feel that Angelina ’fixed’ her rendition to more closely align with Hawkins’ intent of a love song while also appreciating his consequential recordings, by creating some middle ground between the original and her favorite cover(s). For me, mentioning her age only add icing to the cake, because no one of any age accomplishes what Angelina did after 65 years and an endless list of covers.

All the speculation is actually wonderful. Things that we know for sure: Angelina pours out her soul, with every performance; she has a great since of humor; she is humble; she has great respect for the artists she covers; she loves her family and fans; as she has stated, singing is like breathing for her. We all appreciate music differently but the one thing her fans, of which her Grandma Mery is probably her greatest of all, have in common is that we can’t get enough of her. I believe, as do many this performance will be enshrined in the Music Hall of Fame.

After watching many of Angelina’s recordings, listening to a variety of vocal & performance coaches, and watching the limited number of interviews with Angelina; my impression of her is that she probably has 1) an idyllic memory for sound, allowing her to remember everything she ever heard and giving her a wealth of knowledge to access at any time; 2) an abnormally sensitive perfect pitch, allowing her to hear finest of details in other singer voices; 3) an innate internal metronome, allowing her to always know exactly were/when she is within the time signature; and 4) developed incredible dexterity of her entire vocal tract, allowing her to not only mimic the sounds of other vocalists but to also emit the emotions those performers were experiencing during the original performances, without actually experiencing the emotions herself.

Secondly she said, when she sings she closes her eyes and goes into another world. An endless world filled with happiness and love. Basically tapping into her heart it sounds like to me. I find two unique personas in Angelina’s videos. 1) an age appropriate awareness and reaction before and after she starts singing, and this reappears occasionally during long instrumental sections between verses; and 2) ‘the singer’, the vocal artist who has an absolute control and mastery of the moment. Sometimes you get to see her transition into or out of that magical world, from this magnificent timeless vocal artist persona into a girl of her age at the time.

Angelina was 9 years old in this performance - This song was not arranged for her - she wrote the arrangement based on listening to the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version - in fact, at the beginning of the video you see Angelina writing down some last-minute changes and it is read by the bandleader. You also notice that her own handwritten notes are on the music stand in front of her as she sings. For more insight into how Angelina works, here is a rehearsal video with some of the members of the same band at the same age (9 yrs old) - You will see that she is aware of what each musician is doing and gives them some instructions. From Iowa, USA; OK, WOW ❗🤗🌹 1. An important thing to remember about AJ is that she refused to sign for a record deal through AGT and they relented and invited her to sing anyway. 2. AJ is currently signed with Republic Records. 3. AJ began singing at 18 months. Her grandmother was a jazz/blues fan and played that genre of music for AJ. She fell in love with it very early on and has even arranged most if not all that she sings from age 8. What an incredible talent. 4. Currently in 2022 she is in her mid-teenage years, stands 6 foot tall and still performs barefoot. The backstory of her encounter with the homeless girl she met while she traveled with her family through Iran at age 6 includes the weather damaged bare feet of the child she gave her own shoes to. 5. The reason she performs barefoot is to bring awareness to her public of the children worldwide who can't afford shoes of their own. She has raised millions of dollars for clothing including shoes for those unfortunate children. 💕 6. AJ sews her own clothes, (the cloth is designed by her grandmother). 7. We all hope to enjoy her performances for many years to come. 8. BTW I'm 80 and have been involved privately in music since my age of 7.

It is truly a conundrum when we try to rationalize how it is possible that this tiny sweet-faced 9yo Norwegian girl can step up to a microphone, flip some switch within her, become this "beast-mode" version of herself and deliver this historic performance. "I Put a Spell On You" has been covered many times and is recognized as a classic, yet almost never is the tone of the original 1956 "Screamin" Jay Hawkins version captured (before Nina Simone). This is because Hawkins was the original shock-rock guy (think Ozzy Osbourne type craziness) and his style is difficult to emulate and also because his dated delivery is uncomfortable and stereotypical to our modern sensibilities. Yet Angelina respectfully sings his own song in a manner that exceeds his (Hawkin's image is on the candle she holds at the start of her video). You must go and listen to Hawkins' original to appreciate the true genius in how AJ incorporates many of his vocal elements [usually omitted by most singers]. This shows another aspect of her musical IQ and arranging genius (not to mention her masterful control of her vocal instrument equaled by few others regardless of age). She based this version on the Screaming Jay Hawkings original. She took his wild performance and put it into a jazz style. Much of what you hear is a 'musicalised' version of Hawkings' extraordinary enunciations, including that 'Ha, ha, ha' bit you mentioned. But what gets me about Angelina's performance is the drama in it. That first utterance is like a menacing whisper, and she practically spits out the word 'spell' then adds a neat vibrato so you can't answer back. After that she sends shaft after shaft of barbed arrows, pinning down the person who is addressed here. Then the extended 'Ooo' section is like an incantation, and at the end you are completely at her mercy, like a rabbit caught in the stare of a weasel. Thank you so much for this reaction. Can't wait for more!

Fantastic reaction and articulations. As I'm sure others may have stated here I believe her interpretation is closest to Screaming Jay Hawkins 'original' in tempo and sharp audacity but she bumps up the melodic swing and cohesive tightness whereas I'd say Screaming Jays was looser in his rhythmic expressions with the song. All said it seems she had to have really invested time in really evaluating so much of Screaming Jays intents and then allowed her indwelling musicality to shine through this incredible re-interpretation and of course, 'making it her own'. Her respect was so uniquely honoring that id love to know how she and/or Grandma Mery came up with the Screaming Jay candle that she presents at the beginning? Cheers 🥂, and look fwd to following your AJ journey

Many believe the music legends blessed Angelina with a unique tone and style that transcends all. This performance is likely the finest recording ever of a 9 year old, and is a taste of things to come. Like most reactors, you request that your viewers like, comment, share and subscribe to your Channel. The fact is that most do not know how best to support you or the artist, but would comply if they knew HOW and WHY! Begin by providing all reactor and artist links in your description. Next, inform your viewers HOW and WHY either verbally, or by PINNING the support guidelines below. I suggest your reading it, as it will help you understand what your viewers need to do to support you. VIEWERS: Help enhance the exposure of your favorite reactors and artists! It is essential to first address the KZbin algorithm, as it determines how frequently videos are displayed on viewers' KZbin feeds. "Showing love", as you hear from some reactors, does not help the algorithms. Rather, take the very specific actions below to elevate the reactors' and artists' analytics. First, focus on the reactors as they are the ones who promote your favorite artists. Help them boost their algorithms by watching their entire REACTOR video, and liking, commenting, and sharing, then subscribing to THEIR channel links. Pay equal attention to the artists' algorithms, as this provides the same critical benefits! Use the ARTISTS' ORIGINAL video link to watch till the end, like, comment, and share, and subscribe to THEIR channel links as well. It is clear that boosting REACTORS' and ARTISTS' algorithms improves their analytics, and ultimately expands both their fan bases. Follow these guidelines to help further the careers of your favorite artists, and to encourage new reactor subscriptions from greater fan loyalty, as have hundreds of others. PEACE AND LOVE. You never get bored with Angelina because you never can predict exactly how she will sing a song. Love the middle eastern sounding run at the end
@lengould92622 жыл бұрын
Not mimicking, you're right. There are many features of this arrangement that are unique to Angelina, no other singer has tried them. The "Hey hey hey" and the connected scream (on a breath INTAKE by AJ) are taken in spirit from a maniacal laugh section from J Hawkins himself's most well-known performance. At least the scream part of which is always ignored by subsequent performers.

Yes, I love Nina Simones version, but this was Screamin Jay Hawkins cover which was outstanding and I believe she did the arrangement herself at age 9... that is crazy... 😳 Have an amazing day 👍 Btw, if you have not heard and seen Screamin Jay Hawkins version... check it out, and you will appreciate Angelinas version even more ❤️ Crazy what she has done here.

I watched an interview with one of the judges on Norway's got talent. he said at first they thought she was mimicking, but they walked into one of her rehearsals and seen her giving instructions to the bass player. they knew than she was for real

Great reaction. Yes Angelina in her relaxed sort of way giving us the passion of Screamin' Jay Hawkins, helped by some influence from Shirley Bassey for those powerful drawn out notes. Yes for sure, Angelina is telling us a story. How can a young girl draw us in like this and somehow take us on a journey?

You need to add I'm Still Holding Out For You to your Angela song list. It will give you a appreciation of her ability and what she was capable of at a young age. It was definitely one of her better studio efforts. She was picked to demo a song that was written and released (later) by Baby Fuzz. You'll love it. Seriously, it could have been a hit. Trust me, I'm not leading you astray.

Oh yah she is so cute and adorable then she opens her mouth and the monster comes out . One other thing to remember this tribute to Screaming Jay Hawkens is that she arranged and had all her "wishes" written down for the band director; she was so knowledgeable and understanding abut the music that the band nicknamed her " the Boss "

When I think of a child prodigy, I think of Angelina Jordan. When I think of the singer with the best tone, I think of Diana Ankudinova. When I think of the singer with the best range & control, I think of Dimash Kubaibergen. But when I think of versatility & pure emotion I think of Ronnie Radke from Falling In Reverse, a band you haven't reacted to yet, who I believe is the most talented man in the music industry. Ronnie puts more emotion in his songs, lyrically and vocally than any other artist. His videos are second to none, he has a beautiful voice, and he can Rap, Rock, Growl, or sing a Ballad with more passion and clarity than any other artist. Most of the time he mixes genres in his songs. I'd like to start you off with the song "The Drug In Me Is Reimagined" which is a remake of a song he wrote and released in 2011 called "The Drug In Me Is you." I would say react to both in the same video so you see what changes he did or just skim through the original and react to "The Drug In Me Is Reimagined." Also, Ronnie does react to KZbinrs reacting to him, so you don't have to worry about copyright strikes, which means you don't have to skip or blur any of the videos because Ronnie loves it when his videos get reacted to. What a wonderful reaction to this classic video! Thank you, it was so much fun. I know, what we just heard was unbelievable but, no, there it was, live in black and white! I love the very end of the video when she is pondering if she could have done it any better. Btw, the band members said she was very nice to work with and there was no question, she knew exactly what she wanted and was doing. Her activities at school included going to singing classes. The instructors told her mom that there was no need for her to participate in the classes because they had nothing for her to learn. In fact, they suggested to mom Angelina could already be a master instructor herself! What a head shaking story the Angelina Experience is and discovering her is a joy that warms our heart and very soon, everyone in the world will know who Angelina Jordan is.

Your first instinct is pretty much on the money. The video is a homage to the song’s creator, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. It’s his silhouette that appears on the candle seen in the opening credits. Watch the original Screamin’ Hawkins version; the influence is unmistakable.

Thanks for another great reaction to & appreciation of Angelina's epic performance (which she also arranged) - at age 9. I believe her arrangement was based on the original by Screaming Jay Hawkins (as pictured on the candle in the intro). And - as young as Angelina is here - in order to understand some of her very early influencers, highly recommend going back to all 4 of her Norway Got Talent performances (Gloomy Sunday, I'm A Fool To Want You, Bang Bang & Summertime) - at ages 7-8. I strongly believe that what makes Angelina's performances so special is that she has the innate GOD given gifts of not only a beautiful voice, but also the ability to emote the essence of each song she sings direct to our hearts & souls which allows us to also deeply FEEL her music through her. Thank you. And may GOD continue to watch over & bless Angelina Jordan.
