Haha, I remember this from the first ukulele book I picked up (Li'l Rev's Ukulele vol 1, from Hal Leonard.) Thanks for the memory. About 1970 there was a TV series with John Pearse on making your own dulcimer. I had a go, never managed to get it in tune (my luthiery skills I suspect).

I have noticed that the nut height is really critical. They are a simple instrument, but, of course, difficult to get perfect. The one I have recently purchased is pretty good. Made in Indiana.
