On the American tank, the bulge is indeed an extractor. That model T-55 however, lacks this component, and has a muzzle brake for flash suppression/dispersion.

Looks like I was sorta half-wrong. :-). The T-54A and B had this according to Wikipedia: "Originally, this had a small muzzle counter-weight, which was later replaced with a fume extractor."

Those'll both be a long wait. One is being done by RAZBAM, so that'll take forever. The F-1 is being worked on by an absolutely tiny (if extremely talented) team so I expect that will also take a very long time.

More very entertaining uploads by GR, thanks guys! Some real nail biting moments there, I think we all got drawn right into the action here. Looking at photos of Cuban aircraft at the time I can say they definitely had MiG23MF exports, which is equivalent to the Soviet version and not the downgraded 23MS however this doesn't necessarily mean they had R23 missiles available for whatever reason. They also had the MiG23B series, which looks just like a MiG27 but has the engine and variable intakes of the MiG23M/MF so retains the MiG23 high altitude performance. The MiG27 has an engine with a simplified afterburner and redesigned inlets which are not variable geometry for its low altitude strike role, but this is not the version Cuba had, they had the much more powerful 23B which, with stores jettisoned would be next to impossible to catch on the run. It's just surprising to me since it shows just how close the relationship between Cuba and Moscow really was, this was really their top shelf equipment they were handing over, shy of the PVO best of the best. Cuba also had a ton of MiG21bis, more numbers than the 23MF and 23B which would've been their pride and joy and my guess would be sparingly used, sort of like MiG29 in Saddam's Iraqi air force with only the best pilots given those and mostly older models flown by everyone else, which also means if you see a swing wing MiG there's an undoubtedly well trained pilot in it. My guess is that like the way Iraqis used their MiG29 in conjunction with groups of MiG23 as lead ships the Cubans probably used their MiG23 in the same way with groups of MiG21, eg. Iraqis would have one MiG29 leading a flight of 4 MiG23 in the Soviet trained method of using PVO leads (1-4 MiG25 or Su15) together with flights of Frontal Aviation (4-24 MiG23M) essentially as controller aircraft; or in another case Iraqis would have 2-4 MiG29 come hot and turn cold on a flank to distract a Coalition strike escort from a larger group of 4-8 MiG23 coming farther out on the other side which were the actual engagement force. Worth mentioning however the 23ML/D we have modelled is more advanced than the 23M/MF with more powerful engine, lighter weight, some airframe modifications, updated fire control set, newer radar and updated missiles and according to Soviet appraisal is capable of tangling with the early F16 production series where the older 23M really wasn't, so if we're to believe that then the MLD in game is far more capable than the MF the Cubans had, which is still significantly superior to the 21bis and 23MS you'd expect to see in Soviet friendlies as opposed to satellites. With that in mind I think it's quite fair to use M2000C as a substitute for MF1 as well as Cheetah from the perspective of bridging the gap between MiG23MF and MiG23MLD performance, especially considering that aside from slightly newer and slightly better equipped avionics and defence systems the Mirage F1 was regarded as comparable to the Cheetah/Kfir in terms of speed/handling. And whilst the F5E is a fair representative of the Mirage III at lower altitudes it certainly isn't when going vertical and the Mirage III fleet was taken offline for tear down reconstruction during the Cheetah program at the time of the conflict, with the F1 carrying the weight of SAAF fighter forces. If doing more missions for this conflict my vote is for BluFor to get M2000C rather than F5E as a reasonable representation of Mirage F1, there shouldn't be any Mirage III available at the time whilst being reconstructed as Cheetahs and the 23MLD is superior to the 23MF the Cubans had anyway so it seems a fairer representation. Going by photos however it certainly does appear the MiG21bis far outnumbered the MiG23 in Cuban service and was the main fighter type of the day, but the 23 was pride of the air force certainly. The Cubans also received a large shipment of SA3 SAM systems to cover their offensive at that time so it's not like things are going to get any easier. An interesting note about the F5E is the reason it was chosen as the aggressor aircraft for the US: it was found of all fighters available to the US it most closely matched later versions of the MiG21 at lower altitudes in all respects of performance, obviously the MiG had superior speed at higher altitudes but at BFM training regimes it was virtually identical. But my impression is they were talking under 12,000ft and you guys had some serious elevation in the combat area to begin with didn't you? I don't know at what altitude the F5 degrades significantly to the MiG21, just that all the reading material cites their equivalence at low altitude.

True fact - from Sept 1985 to early 1986, I was stationed in Windhoek, Namibia in the SA Medical services, supplying the army and air force bases in northern Namibia (or South West Africa) as it used to be called) with medical supplies. I left the service in 1987 and we never heard of these battles. Given what we heard about the land engagements, though, we wouldn't have been surprised.

1:10:50~1:10:52 seconds, At present, Iran has exactly 12 MIG-23s surrendered from Iraq, but due of the shortage of parts, these former Iraqi MIG-23s, which were later painted with the Iranian Air Force emblem, it has been sealed and stored since 1994. It seems that these original Iraqi Air Force MIG-23 fleets received, sealed and used by Iran, in this game plot, "make the best use of everything"! It seems that the Red Army camp in this new version of the Angolan Civil War, it's even more exciting after Iran joins!

How many errors in such a short briefing! There are multiple reliable sources about this conflict, covering the air battles. Among them several books by Brigadier Dick Lord. such as Vlamgat, etc. The Cubans didn't just send "advisors" (that was their propaganda) - they had over 50,000 troops in the country by 1987 in several divisional formations. The Cheetah aircraft were not used in the conflict at all as they were not yet operational. Aircraft involved were F1A/CZ's, Impala 2's and Buccaneers with Canberras/Mirage IIIR's doing PR work. Several MiGs and Mi-8's were shot down, the South Africans lost an F1 with another written off in a crash landing at Rundu, leaving the pilot paralyzed by the ejection seat firing when it ran off the runway after losing all hydraulics from battle damage. Both were struck by SAMs. The crash-landed aircraft was later rebuilt. Major Ed Every of the SAAF got two of the MiGs in two separate engagements. The Angolans and Cubans had very dense SAM networks including SA-3/6 and -8 and volumes of AAA. One of the latter launcher and radar vehicles was captured by the South African Army. The tank shown here allegedly used by the SA Army is incorrect. They used rebuilt Centurion tanks and locally built AFV's. The object referred to on the end of the barrel of the tank is not a silencer or a muzzle brake, it is a gas extractor. A muzzle brake 2/3 of the way down the barrel would hardly work very well.... The battle at Cuito Cunevale was centered around the town itself which sat on a river which divided a huge swathe of territory in two. In the town was a bridge which was a key feature to the battleground. The Angolans and Cubans were outfought here, though in typical fashion, claimed victory as the South Africans eventually withdrew, losing three tanks in a minefield. The SAAF was reticent to engage the Cubans more aggressively in the air as they could not replace lost aircraft, of which they had few to begin with. Despite this, every air-to air meeting that did take place ended in a SAAF victory. No SAAF aircraft were lost in Air-to-Air engagements. The SAAF was mainly limited by the SAM threat. Combat losses besides the F1' described already included an Impala 2 (Macchi MB326), an AM-3C spotter aircraft, a Puma and at least one Allouette III the latter two to AAA. There are some fascinating books on the conflict, on land and sea launched special forces, (4 Recce) the famous 32 Battalion as well as the SAAF operations. Despite the policies of the government the SADF was one of the most racially integrated organizations in the country. Opponents on the battlefield were not judged by their race, but by their performance. Angolan FAPLA troops usually performed poorly, SWAPO guerrillas were respected as were most of the Cuban units who fought the SADF. The SADF observed an extremely professional attitude to their recording of events and operations. There is no "bias". Perhaps a point of view - but that is common to every military. Incidentally, the Cuban general Arnoldo Ochoa, who was the theatre commander and respected by the SADF was returned to Cuba shortly after the Battle of Cuito Cunevale and was executed in July 1989 on charges of "corruption".
