I don't think Tom noticed, because he just quicly hovered over it in a shop, but they did change Orbert's Story, so it's no longer strange and random, but instead it wants you to go into lot of ? events. (Useful if the map ahead is filled with them). Also classic Tom questioning the viability of an orb after one bad shot on a map that wasn't really built for it lol!

I think, and this is not for sure, but I think tom could've lived and beaten that final fight if he had gutterball'ed all the shots and not detonated any bombs. The red bomb guy does flat damage, so if all the shots go into the void with no pegs and the discards for it, theoretically it'd take 4 shots to win? Maybe though.

Had a similar build about a week ago with lots of refresh synergy. I picked up the pegs can refresh into bombs relic right before the final boss. I oneshot the dragon... and myself on the first turn. 10/10, would blowup again.

I think on the final boss if you just aimed directly down without hitting anything it would have one-shot all of them and done no damage to you. It should have dealt 40 x 90 = 3600 damage.

I believe if you took the relic that refreshes each time an enemy dies would help. Because that'd have healed you 6 HP each time something died as well. That and firing the doctorb in the final fight might have been enough to save you.

Tom saying he read the patch notes, doesn't know about the new laser orb, mole/muscircle interaction, and skips shock orbsorber which would have reduced the red orb damage (resulting in only 102 damage at the final boss instead of 156). That being said he likely would have still died depending on what shop items he went for.
