Respectfully, I don't agree with many of the comments on here. I've ridden trails in the UK for decades, dating back to the days of RUPPS, and have done numerous MCC Trials etc, but sorry guys, whilst the farmer did make a drama about not much, I don't think you were blameless. You weren't racing, but you were hardly pottering along either. If there is a farm around, or a sensitive area, why not take it slowly. When he 'confronted' you, wouldn't it also have been better to switch of your engines, takes your lids off, get off the bikes & just try to take the steam out of things. In the PR battle re land access, t's not the biking community that need persuading. Not sure this video does bikers many favours.

I'm entering the lions den here, but I'll give it from the farmers point of view (I was a farmer and ride enduro). The by-ways come from a forgotten time, they were there as an agreement between landowners to allow each others staff to cross the neighbours land to get to their land for work.....they're 4ft wide because that's the width of two people either side of a coffin. There was no thought given to motocross etc when the rights were given, so the rights are not fit for purpose. I do see it from either side, but from the farmers point of view, you are given right to THEIR land....their HOME, because of a right/law that was put into place for very different reasons. Politically it's a non starter. There are few farmers and many more dog walkers/bikers so is left in place for no reason other than votes (or lack there of) for dog walkers etc. Remember, you are given rights to someones home because of an old law misused. I have been where you were and have been annoyed with farmers myself not being respectful. You closed the gates and wasnt being reckless.......however, the farmers on the losing end of this type of right/law.
@EnduroTravelR3 жыл бұрын
Haha brave comment here 😂. No in all seriousness, can completely understand what you mean and what your saying, but as the farmer like you said the byway has always been there so choosing to live there you have to deal with what comes with it. It’s like buying a house next to a school and asking the kids not to play at lunch because they are too noisy, or living near an airport and asking planes not to fly... You can’t expect others to stop or think that you can be abusive towards others just because you don’t like it...

@airindiana2 жыл бұрын
Prob is with that way of approach. Regardless of how it started hundreds of years ago, no farmer alive today was around during the inception of those paths, their land wasn’t modified during the creation of the byeways only to find people changing the law under their feet. That would be one thing. Any farmer today inherited/bought the land with those structures in place for hundreds of years along with what that legally means today, in todays world and who was using that right of way before the farmer came along and who can continue accessing it.

I hate motorbikes especially those without number plates because in an accident they'll hit and run and because they get into my local public open space which is motor vehicle free and dig up the grass down to the chalk. I thought I had you when you left the first gate open but you dismounted and shut it. You've got number plates and your using a byeway open to all traffic so you have a right of way and the speed limit is 50mph. You were traveling at around 20mph, you hand good visability and reaction time ahead of you, I didn't see any animals and there were none loose on the route. On a long gentle downhill in dry conditions I can do 20 mph on a bridleway on a good mountainbike, so I can't complain about your vehicle handling. The farmer had a genuine concern for his animals but he did not have the basis for a complaint or a reason to lose his temper. I notice you withdrew without threatening him or riding motorbikes straight at him. You did everything right which means that I'd have to coexist with you if our paths crossed in the countryside. There are however sunken footpaths on the North Downs that are being destroyed by irresponsible motorbike and quad bike use, they are cutting into the chalk and reshaping tracks that have been there for thousands of years. As a walker I don't want a countryside full of anti motorbike barriers and motorbike prosecution warning signs.

@@davidrobinson4118Watching the video again the motor bikers don't like it when the farmer photographs their number plates. The blue no. 7 motor bike has his number plate facing upwards so it cannot be read. Since this video there has been a massive outbreak in the use of motorbikes without number plates on public footpaths and public open spaces in Kent. The motor bikers are systematically destroying anti vehicle gates to access property they should not be in. The motor bikers will threaten or attack anyone the photographs or objects to them. There has been a lot of rain through this winter and the surfaces of public footpaths are being turned into swamps by the motorbikes, trees are dying because motorbikes are riding both sides of them. At the moment the sheep and cows are pregnant, motorbikes going near farm animals will cause miscarriages. Some of the motor bikers express their true selves by wearing WW2 NAZI helmets! Sadly Kent Police are a bunch of incompetent fools who arrest First Aiders instead of hit and run drivers and we can expect the situation to become worse and walkers will be run down and left to bleed out.

It seems like many of the trails you are riding cut through Farms and Private Land. Hence all the gates. @EnduroTravelR Жыл бұрын
The speed limit is 60mph and that is what it is 🤷♂️ The noise of a 2T in the low gears is surely a good thing. Any noise warns people that you are coming. Don’t get me wrong I’m not for hacking down the lanes at silly speeds and we definitely arnt in this one, but im not going to drive 15mph just incase there is someone walking on a byway. You don’t get people going onto the roads and expecting cars to drive 15mph on a 60mph road because there might be a horse and carriage.
@iangrimshaw1 Жыл бұрын
@@EnduroTravelR I still think you are approaching this very much from the idea that you can ride more or less as you would on a fully tarmacked and maintained road. I'm not disputing the fact of a 60mph limit but all sensible guidance advises somewhere between walking pace and maybe a bit above 20 on a wide open long moorland Byway. The idea that a noisy 2T is a good thing would probably be challenged by any of the other Byway users and could easily be a significant contributor to the closure of the Byway to us.
@EnduroTravelR Жыл бұрын
I’m definitely not approaching it as though it is a tarmacked road. If it was a tarmacked road I would in fact be doing 60mph or close to. As you can see in the video we are doing nowhere near that speed. Haha the 2T’s definitely arnt the problem with noise and byways being shut down. If you had ever actually heard a 2T vs a 4T you’d understand the difference in noise and how silly that remark is. You can’t do anything in the UK without someone complaining and if the walkers really do have an issue I’d advise them to go and find a walking trail. There are a shed load more of them than byways so stop spoiling others fun just because you choose to walk on a byway 🤷♂️

No this is a legal byway, so effectively a road that all cars and motorcycles etc are legally allowed to ride. I understand what your saying but other people’s potential bad behaviour doesn’t give him the right to tar us with the same brush and shout at us for no reason. 🤷♂️

No such thing where they are. In simple “merican” terms. They basically have laws in place that allow people to ride on damn near any connecting trail/road between properties they want. Hence why they are so casually opening and shutting gates. If you notice the guy isn’t arguing that they are trespassing he is telling them to slow down and bitching because they were being too loud for him.. they weren’t trespassing

@@EnduroTravelR that’s the term I was looking for! Thanks! Man I really wish we had a system like that here. I mean we can connect national park trailheads by roadway and all but just being able to cut cross country in any way you want like you guys get to seems so cool.

@ukbiker1631 Жыл бұрын
@@Halfstep2024 Not correct at all. We are not allowed to ride in many places at all and certainly cannot ride on a connecting path just because it is there or across open land without the owners permission. This is a specific route known as a Byway that is a historic right of way and open to vehicles (as opposed to a bridleway or footpath that is a right of way but not for vehicles). Riders must keep to the specified route and are trespassing if they deviate off it. The farmer is entitled to place gates etc but they must not be locked. He is completely incorrect in this case about speed as byeways do not have posted speed limits so the only limit that is in force, as far as I am aware, and apart from common sense and courtesy is the national speed limit of 60MPH which they were clearly nowhere near.

@@adriantompson I think the main reason is that most of our BOAVs here are not really popular walking routes so there is less conflict of users. You do get the occasional dog walker. I did once take a wrong turn thinking the route I was on was part of the BOAV and the landowner (who had clearly seen it happen before) simply pointed me to the correct route that ran parallel but about 200m further across.

Slow it down on sensitive sections, grassy farm land / animals or even evidence of animals. Use neutral and cruise past at tick over noise.
