Mark Anderson remembers coming to Byron Dragway some 15 years ago with his dad. At that time legendary Byron Dragway track owner and promoter Ron Leek had a fondness for the Ford Lightning performance pickup trucks. Mark's dad ran the ford dealership where Ron would purchase the trucks and then have him modify them at the Anderson Ford Motorsports facility.
Jump ahead to late April of 2021 as Mark returns to the "Playground of Power" some 15 years later to test his '86 Ford Mustang. The temperature had cooled down overnight to the low 50's with light northerly winds, clear blue skies and low humidity. It was the perfect weather for making horsepower and with a freshly prepped track Mark took advantage and put on a show the whole day!
After the first of what would be 3 wild wheelstanding runs in a row, I just had to go check this mustang out! As I made my way around the car Mark came up and answered all my questions and explained more about the car. What really blew me away was the engine, which at first glance looks massive. Mark races the car in the NMRA/NMCA factory stock class where you have only 3 engine options. You can run a sealed stock coyote engine, an old pushrod 302ci or a 2 valve 4.6 V8 out of a F150 pickup truck. Mark's choice is the 2 valve 280ci 4.6 with stock heads and naturally aspirated with 380hp. Mated to a G-Force 101A 4 speed and a stock mustang 8.8 rear with a 4.88 gear along with very small M/T 8.5 wide rear slicks this combo just flat out works! #NMRA #factorystockmustang #foxbody
