The saddest thing in life is wasted talent, and in the case of Mafia III, wasted potential. They were on the right track in so many ways, but dropped the ball in a lot of other ways. I still really enjoy the game and can appreciate it for what it was, but with more time in the oven and a more clearly defined and focused experience, it could've been one of the all time greats.

The gameplay will disappoint. Cut scenes look beautiful and the intro is awesome. But you never feel like it's a mafia game. You don't get to take over businesses, it's the same animation for every boss. So every district has an under boss and a district boss, they all have the same animation so you see it 38 times in the game. There isn't a lot to do in the world other than the story so it's beautiful but empty. It just misses the mark, the main character is more of a hitman than a mob boss on the rise. I just really wanted it to be good and aside from the visual it just wasn't there.

God, Mafia 1 was amazing even today.

I enjoyed the aesthetic of this game, the time period, the music, the album cover/magazine collectables were all great for creating a vibe. What really let this game down for me was that I just felt so alone in the open world, it 'looked' lived in but it didn't 'feel' lived in, not once did I find myself intuitively going up to NPC's and seeing how they would react with me or watch NPC's from a distance as they do different things - That's a powerful feature of Rockstar games for me. Also the mission game play was repetitive as hell, I was a one Man army at all times and no one could stop me, it was just boring after a while.

A bit late to the party, but there was a location in the bayou where ther are wooden cabins and boathouses on both sides of a river that's a little community of riverfolk VERY reminiscent of the movie Mud with Matthew McConaughey. It's well hidden as you'll only see it if you go off the beaten path near a rural liquor store/clubhouse type building, but it was such a unique location. I don't remember ever doing a mission that takes you there. But if the game had an option to have purchasable living locations, that would be where I would hang my hat.

Even though the game was flawed I loved Mafia III. And I keep coming back to enjoy the open world from time to time. I think I just really enjoy open worlds that are set in a specific time period. So many games are either set in the future or medieval / fantasy times. And because of that I truly enjoy games that are set in recent history even more. I really hope the next GTA or Mafia game will be set in the 80's or 90's that would be such a nice change of scenery!
