Some of the stuff Mafia 2 did was so unique- running out of gas, having to obey the laws, going in lots of restaurants/stores buying stuff. It's a shame more devs don't try to add new/unique mechanics like these in their games.

Michael S, it appears that Mafia 2 was also designed to have few npcs and stuff to do because it was the story they were focusing on more and the game world was really secondary just there as a 'backdrop' and not as a 'playground' like GTA or Skyrim. In fact, before I bought M2 some people were saying that M2 wasn't a typical open world ala GTA/Elder Scrolls because you couldn't do much in there away from the storyline. Luckily, it worked for me. The story was so engaging that I didn't care that much if the game world was, though attractive, almost dead.

It's kind of ridiculous how channels like this that meticulously and articulately discuss games without all the typical arbitrary bullshit are in the minority while all the gimmicky channels have sub counts numbering in the millions. I honestly hope this trend catches on where KZbinrs make the GAMES the focus of their channels, and not fucking lame ass skits, forced humor, fake outrage, overly opinionated reviews, and stupid gimmicky series'. *Cough AngryJoe/TotalBiscuit/JimSterling Cough* Keep doing you, ACG/Karak. One thing that really bothers me is the physics on his jacket. It is a combat jacket and would have been made of a fairly heavy canvass type material giving it quite a lot of weight. In the game it bounces around like it is made of jelly. Only a small thing, but something i noticed quite quickly.

The other way this game disappointed me was that it wanted the racial aspect of it to impact the way people react to you in the game world, but really nothing happens. The police look at you but wont stop you. You can drive like a crazy person but they dont stop you for any reason. People will cuss at you but not get aggressive. Some will just stare. It didnt make me feel cemented in the world because the AI didnt act like I was even there some of the time. I completely agree that this game feels unfinished. A real disappointment to me at least.

Can you tell me a little bit about what is happening with the shadows at 39:47? I have noticed this in a lot of games and I've tried researching it. The best I can tell it's some kind of level of detail switching. It drives me absolutely nuts, I would almost rather the game keep a lower level of detail than have this blatant ridiculous transformation happening three feet in front of my character. It constantly draws my eye and I know some people hate the word immersion but it shatters mine.

I am really enjoying Mafia 3 due to its great setting, interesting characters, solid story, awesome music and top notch voice acting. As far as the shooting is concerned, it feels good. The hand to hand combat is alright and the executions are brutal (albeit the same each time). Mafia 3 has a lengthy solo campaign, numerous optional missions, collectibles to find and upgrades to attain. However, the game's biggest problem comes down to the structure of its missions. You always end up either eliminating the main bad guy or interrogating him. Granted, there is a different twist for each mission (destroy or steal a vehicle, sabotage weapons, eliminate a certain target, etc). The game does so many things right which makes the repetitive nature of the missions all the more noticeable. The game doesn't shy away from racism, police corruption and prostitution (things that were prevalent in the 1960's). Hangar 13 delivered by making an edgy game that explores subject matter that doesn't get touched on in modern gaming. Its a shame that such an amazing game gets held back due to its repetitive mission structure. Another issue is in regards to the sunlight which is way too bright which does bothers the eyes quiet a bit. Also, I've noticed a lot of texture flickering on the PS4 version. I don't know if anyone else has experienced that issue or not. On the plus side, I've spent a pretty good amount of time playing the game without experiencing any crashing problems so far. As a side note, I heard that Hangar 13 utilized the same motion capture technology that was used in L.A. Noire which is why the voice acting and facial animations are so good. Thanks for another great Walking the Walk video. Keep it up Karak!

Eric Nick I have to respectfully dissagree with that. I think they shot themselves in the foot by delivering a rushed game. Gamers letting their voice heard,warning others is a good thing. Because it's just wrong how some companies can get away with these Smash n Grab releases. They got the cash dont give a fuck about the game anymore, dont patch it etc. and leave us with a ripped off empty feeling. If you love this game more power to you, that is great. But I dont think you can the community out for making a scene about this title. I do however think that the creators of the game didnt want this, I can see this was a diamond in the rough and was just rushed. I have the feeling there was a big influence from higher hand in the troubles surrounding this game. Again I wished I could like this game so so much. Because I love(d) the Mafia franchise, but I think this was the last stop for my Mafia ride.
@ericnick44988 жыл бұрын
noLuckyStrike09 They are planning to patch the game as well as giving free content to add more variety in gameplay. I do agree it should have no been rushed but the game is literally getting unreasonable hate. We have people actually going out of there way to destroy the game and developers. Ignoring all of the good and pointing out the bad that past Mafia games had. Even going so far to call the game racism for the game to represent actual themes and tones people had in the past. It's quite sad really.
@noLuckyStrike098 жыл бұрын
Eric Nick Alright some of that I agree on. In my case it was because of the bugs and weak AI, I could not immerse mysef in the game simply couldn't. The story started of so wonderful!!! I also want to add here, I play on a pc 144hz monitor and the game was horrible blurry 720p, 30 fps and the lighing was aweful from the start I tried to play through but I couldn't. People don't buy a game for 45-60 euro for it to be "Planned to be patched".

Keep up the great videos! I love the reviews podcasts and the walking the walks particularly. Have you had any formal training in game development or is it just years of experience with studying games and speaking with developers? As for Mafia 3, I really loved most of the aspects of it, especially the story. It got so much right particularly the city, the soundtrack and the main story missions, but the lighting and weather systems just made it bizarre looking at times and I really wish they would have fleshed out some of the district side missions with some variation or at least make them unique. The racial stuff just got to cartoon levels at some points even though that is a difficult subject to capture in a game. The shutdown to the game menu happened more times than I could count, but other than that, I don't remember any major bugs that were more than annoyance; did get stuck in places I wasn't supposed to be a few times. The game didn't live up to my expectations, but I would say it was good.

Great breakdown. Very detailed, as always. I lost the comment I was working on but yeah, lots of things about the world that I noticed, good and bad, but overall I think it's impressive. I just wish it had more time in the oven. Interestingly, although bugs were a major point of discussion, the gameplay got more criticism than I expected. I know that some expected a sandbox, and Mafia has never been what I'd call a sandbox. Here the criticism is probably harsher because the world is so big. I've heard a lot of complaints about it being empty and repetitive. People generally expect more to do in such a vast game space. I guess it didn't bother me because my frame of reference was Mafia 1 and 2. Although I wonder if the world is too big for its gameplay, I think that hemming in this world, condensing it, would do it a disservice. If it's all about creating a sense of place, you've got to make room for that place you're looking to capture. I really thought this game would be a sleeper hit. Not sure what the sales are like up to here but clearly it's not been received as I had hoped. Overall, I think it's pretty good, but that they've missed an opportunity here. I guess I would blame the publisher for that. There's just no way Hangar 13 wanted this game out the door so quickly! Because they've put too much love into it to release a damn beta. I can only hope that we'll get another Mafia and this isn't it for the series.

Thanks for doing this video man. I really wish I hadn't bought this game, like you said the lack of interactivity and things to do in the game killed my desire to play it. Interesting video, although I wish you had talked more on the lighting in general not just dynamic weather effects. For example as I'm sure you've noticed because everyone has to have noticed this, when you're in some areas it's like the lighting around you will for lack of a better term, bleach your character. Or he becomes almost chameleon-like. The light just doesn't connect with your character in a realistic way. I really don't know what that's about and I thought you could've elaborated on that. It looks so bad. Happens a little in this video when you're towards the back of the store at the end there.

I beat the game from start to finish, i'm a big mafia fan, but so many aspects of mafia 3 are simply terrible and the world for mafia 3 is one of those, it feels extremely dead even in cities with npc's which barely react to what is going on, they simply do their thing and that is to walk down the street back and forth. There's not many places you can enter and you can't interact with anything compared to mafia 2 , strange and in many ways not finished and lacking personality.
@vishansilva85468 жыл бұрын
franky Mafia 2 was also dead as an open world and Mafia 3 open world really didn't really feel all the dead TBH I liked the way npc's reacted to me and the way certain districts looked but Thts just me loved both games.

Vishan Silva Mafia 2's open world was still better than 3 in my opinion. Npc's reacted more to what was going on and you could go in restaurants and eat and have your shoes shined and a bunch of other little things. The little things add up and sadly Mafia 3 lacks most of them. Search up Mafia 2 vs Mafia 3 on youtube and click the first video.

RiotnRespect yea your right to a degree but Mafia 2 open world still lacked a whole lot and was still dead TBH.yea it has a lot of the little attention to detail stuff like restaurant to eat and some other little things.and npc's never really reacted all tht much TBH so Mafia 2 open was still lifeless Mafia 3 is the same but npc's react a bit more in my opinion from Wat I experienced.espically when I commit a crime or point a gun at them and with certain neighborhoods I go to but Thts just me.mafia 2 did have the attention to detail stuff I'll give u tht.

The defining moment for Maifa 3 for me was, I went into a store for a playboy; and I used the front door. This little old lady (at least she sounded old) told me "to get out, you N word." This wasn't a villian, just a person. It really made me think that the 60s must've sucked. I felt very uncomfortable, as a white guy I never experienced anything like it. It's a shame they packed it full of samie missions. I feel had it been more like Maifa 2 and focued purely on story (and less buggy), it would've been a masterpiece. Awesome video.

I really enjoyed the story and the motion capture was pretty precise, but the draw distances and constant pop in really took away for me.

Awesome breakdown of the game! Still loving the game at times...but it does feel like a beta - Any idea when there releasing updates/patches?

I loved the rain effects on the game, if you notice when the ground is dry, you can see the individual drops landing on surfaces like concrete, and slowly the concrete gets more and more wet. And I agree with your comment on the interiors, why did they make laundromats that you could enter, or stores or restaurants if you couldn't interact with them aside from the occasional collectible or register/lockbox to loot? And to go so far as to highlight these locations on the map made it all the more jarring. I thought maybe you could wash your blood soaked clothes only to realize, nope, this is for naught. Great video.

Julian Watkins a lot of people seem to claim Mafia III is bad because it's an open World game period but my problem with the series is that it struggles with how that open World is designed you have all these things in here but they're just there there's not gameplay or narrative purpose so it's just like what was going on?

Something about the art style of this game puts me off. I dont know why.. Its kind of hazey, everything looks plastic or something.

Fantastic video. I enjoyed the open world of Mafia 3 but the lack of basic things to do killed it for me. It really feels barebones. A real disappointment as I was really hoping this game would be something special.

For example when Lincoln was walking through the garden while those people were drinking tea. It's quite odd to see a random big black man taking a walk in your garden. So you just continue to drink tea then?

ACG definitely interesting, watched it twice. good WTW though. I was wondering if it was going to get one. Question though, (not related) the last and only elder scrolls I played is oblivion, is skyrim worth a look?

*shrugs* I thought so but if you didn't get it already I can't say there is some reason you should stop many years of a pattern of not buying it

ACG good point. The graphical update and the intrigue of the 4pro perked my ears. lol. thanks, holla at you next video. be easy bro, and again great content.

ps4 pro apparently has the same restrictions on mods. If your doing console Xbox is the only way to fly. The S at least upscales to 4k but more importantly it has 5 gigs of mod space versus 1

@larryjohnson1508 жыл бұрын
I think this one may have been more interesting due to Mafia III's problems. By that I mean its easy when you're playing a game to spot weird issues, like ones in Mafia, but for someone like me that plays a lot of games and only has the most basic idea of how they work its cool to have an explanation of what causes it and what might correct it.
@markpartridge74258 жыл бұрын
the game is so close to being great but the weird lighting and weather effects and the skybox that looks like its from a ps1 game makes me feel like the developers didn't even play the game themselves or have anybody bug testing it. i will be pretty pissed if they don't patch this

Guess I'm the only one who loved this game yea it has its problems but overall I really did enjoy this game.yea it is a bit repetitive but I didn't mind it.i was emeresed in the open world it made me feel like I was in the 60's and the racial tension in the game was a good aspect in the game I liked tht since Lincoln was black he was not allowed in certain places I like how npc reacted when I went to a all white neighborhood they would call him racial slurs and a whole bunch of other shit.and you see police harassment on the street.its pretty well emeresed for the tht time period accurate.i like how agressive the police in the game is also.and Mafia 3 does a great job with it story and writing TBH I loved the game.
@ACGreviews8 жыл бұрын

still waiting for an open world game where people actually react when you crash into their car, most of them just keep driving like nothing happend =/
