My dad was in the Air Nat Guard, crew chief on a C-130, did two rotations to the sandbox in the mid-2000s. He gave me the backpack he used, the one the military issued him, so I had a backpack for high school. That backpack did two tours in the desert without so much as a scratch or tear. By the end of the first semester of 10th grade that thing was falling apart. Military needs to test their stuff? Give it to a teenager. Hell, they'll have to get used to using it anyway...

One of my last times I spent serious with a group of marines we ended up after the first couple of weeks getting confined to base after dinner. It was a loose first couple of weeks. Even Top was confined by the LtCol for a little bit. In the end it all worked out and we had a ball and no punishment or anything to jeopardise careers came of it. We all learned a valuable lesson in spacing the fun out. I still have fond memories of it all.

I was certain the pic was from some mishap. Didn't think it was an ocean drop though. Thought of the first Abrams death in Iraq was a gunner that couldn't escape from a flipped Abrams in a canal. Figured it was from something similar, but not the ocean. There had to be a load of equipment that came back needing some extra special cleaning after a mishap like this one.

The p'bottle scenario actually happened to me. Little village in South Iraq, I waited till we were about 500ft from the village and threw it on oppisite side of the road but one kid saw it...... USAF here. When I was in basic, my MTI told two other trainees and myself to go throw our sister flights dorm. Said if we didn't do a good enough job, he'd throw ours. So, we went in, took all their uniforms out of their lockers, laid the lockers on their sides, took the bed frames apart, stacked them neatly on the lockers, laid the uniforms out by element formation, and stacked all the mattresses in the shower. MTI came in scowled, and walked out. One weak ass pic does not the whole AF make. 😂 (Although in their defense, all the branches are quite a bit nicer in BMT than we used to be.)

Ok, but no joke, I think you had an unwittingly brilliant idea, use the military for civilian R&D. The military gets to explore a bunch of cool new tech that might have applications on or off the battlefield, the civilian sector gets absolutely amazing field testing data, and the national debt gets chipped away at with the fees the military charges for the service. Legitimately would love to see more dual purpose programs like this where it both serves a public and private function. And as a massive side benefit Army/Marine grunts get to absolutely trash cool tech as a stress reliever without having to foot the bill. Just imagine the marketing effectiveness of being able to market your new phone or watch or whatever as "military tested". That's definitely worth a good bit to the private sector. I swear a "marine proof" phone could cost $5k and people would still buy it.

They just take your pay straight back? I'm not a veteran but I worked for the government and got overpaid once, when HR noticed they just sent me a form to tell them how much they could take out of my future paychecks until the balance was right.
