As a game dev student, I'll tell you this: Most AAA companies make a product, something to market and be sold. A "game" in the most surface level way possible, with all the aspects a "game" should have. Indie games are not made by the sales or the marketing people. They're made by the artists, looking to not just create a game, but an experience worth playing. Artists want to make, well, art. And indie games are what you get when artists have the final say.
@timmtheguy Жыл бұрын
I one hundred percent agree. When looking for a game to play, always go for the small studios first
@KinoGhost Жыл бұрын
I'd also go to say that, with AAA, if the game fails its really not a huge loss to the company. They can take the hit. Now with Indie devs, a lot of them cannot afford for their game to fail from stupid bugs or scuffed launches. The game either runs and plays well with minimal bugs, or the company can just die off. Its not easy making a game, especially if that company has 1-10 people. That coupled with their pure passion to make not only a game, but a work of art makes the perfect storm of a game that is not only fun, but a memorable experience.
@pallingtontheshrike6374 Жыл бұрын
indie successes tend to have a good amount of money behind them already (nothing big, so called “petty bourg” level typically, just not wage slave paycheck to paycheck) and are playing on that scale, so they can afford to put a long time of really trihard work into it. AAA typically ends up majority shareholdered by some wrinkly boomer billionaire who sees the profit numbers and says, for all intents and purposes, “number must get bigger!!!!” hence the gap in marketing and product quality.
@raiskader3560 Жыл бұрын
not totally accurate but yes, AAA and to some extent AA games put a lot of money to make their game (up to 500M and 50M respectively) so the sales strategy is to minimise the risk and do a clean game, even if it means making a game too similar to its predecessor. Indie and Triple I have way less a maximum budget (5M and 10M) respectively, and that's why they can take risks, because for publishers, it is less of a loss if the game sells badly. The problem is the correlation between the risk you are allowing yourself to take, the team you put behind it, and the budget you allow the development of the game to have.
@KinoGhost Жыл бұрын
@@raiskader3560 You probably know more than I do on the subject. I'm just making a conclusion from what I know and see. It does make sense when phrased that way though.

It makes me happy to see Risk of Rain explode in popularity. I bought 10 copies of the original because I enjoyed it and I wanted all my friends to enjoy it too. It was a great hidden gem on Steam. Then, they announced ROR2. By that time, my friends and I had played over 300 hours of the first, gotten all the achievements and discovered every secret. We talked about 2 non-stop for the next couple years until we finally got to buy it. Now, we are back to where we were with Risk of Rain 1, save a couple of the hardest achievements and unlocks. It's a great game, and it sadly had a delayed payout for Hopoo Studios. Despite that, they poured their passion into this game, and people are starting to take notice. Now, this isn't my favorite game of all time, but it's one that you can bring up with your friends on a day where you are bored of everything else, and almost always get a group together to play. It's not a crazy unique game, or that unique of a story even. But what it is, is stupid fun. "just a couple rounds" turns into a 5 hour session that nearly crashes your computer with the number of enemies and bodies on the screen, and before you know it, it's 4 AM and you have work in 4 hours. It's games like these that keep me interested in gaming at all.

Honestly good stuff. Been playing RoR2 since its early access days and it never occurred to me how polished it was, even back then. No Bethesda-level bugs or crashes, if the game did fail at some point it was because I was intentionally breaking it somehow. Then again, I guess that's what true polish is - something so seamless you don't notice the effort that makes it so, unless you're really looking for it or have experienced so much worse in the same areas. Great video dude, keep it up!

I think the reason that I keep coming back to Risk of Rain 2 is because I don't have a reason to stop. You've beat the game once? Ok, do it with a different survivor or artifacts or difficulty or gamemode or strategy or maybe go for a completely different ending entirely, not to mention getting every achievement and logbook entry. You get so much polished content that feels actually rewarding to get through because instead of being some arbitrary quest list where the only reward is getting it done, the reward is trying and failing and eventually succeeding to complete the task in the first place. Most of the really strange parts of game are also tucked away and don't affect your run if you ignore them, like the Lunar items or the other endings. You don't need to get every ending as every character with the hardest modifiers, there's no reward for doing it, but the action of doing is and the options given by the game feel like a reward itself for going out of you way to get skilled enough to even try. Good game, I will continue to be addicted for the rest of my life.

Shields do not directly affect osp. The issue with shields is they need 9 seconds to regen fully, and if you have 2+ then you can't get osp until your shields recharge, which may take longer than your health naturally regenerating.

Welcome to the club! Roguelites are always about the adventure, not the loot and trinkets you keep at the end. Play to *play*. Not to just fill out progress bars, reach a credits roll, fill out a map, scratch off side mission checklists, nor stuff your inventory with items just because. Release mere progression. Embrace play.

thats why i love risk of rain both 1 and 2, coz while theres the standard roguelike fun where you just play, theres also so much to unlock and unique ways to do it, so even if i dont beat the run it gives me something in each run to do which makes it significantly more enjoyable for me

THIS GUY understands the game. So many people try to say "oh if you're not playing on Eclipse 8, you're not playing the game right." I personally enjoy playing with Command, Sacrifice, and Swarms, because there's so many fun item combinations you can do with it. It's not overly difficult, but it still keeps me on my toes enough to make me want to play it. You should play the game the way you enjoy it, and that's what matters. Also this video was hilarious. The bison steak part turned me into a hyena.

I highly recommend Dead Cells. It's another indie roguelite, having meta-progression where you're always getting closer to a goal, even if your runs don't turn out well. The gameplay is very skill based as opposed to luck. Just about any weapon and item will get the job done, and designing a build through your run is very satisfying. Finally, the runs aren't too long or grueling. Maybe 30 mins to an hour on a successful run, beating the final boss. I never feel like I'm lingering in the same place too long and there are many unique, interesting locations and routes to spice up your runs, offering different challenges and rewards. Plus, there is plenty of variety and "end-game" content to justify spending a hefty amount of time with the game.

Redfall is a modern tragedy. Arkane's games are some of the few triple A titles I actually enjoy, but Redfall was made solely because some corporate suit said "hey this genre is popular, go do that". Arkane is known for deep immersive sims that truly let you decide how to play the game, and seeing them add to the pile of looter-shooters that are never good is deeply disappointing.

You told the musics and the stages go very well together. That’s because on some stages developer team kept the OST in mind. For example in the last stage (the moon) the soundtrack for that map was already made so they built the map around that music. They really got the ambiance right
@andrewnash5932 Жыл бұрын
They also completely redesigned the whole moon stage because the original version was probably the worst level design in a roguelite I have ever seen. If you didn't build movement speed there was a shoehorned in several minutes of walking with nothing to do. I dropped the game entirely until they fixed that abomination.

Honestly it's surprising how much you have to do to crash the game. I've also found that some people who lag or crash more often can remove most of that by simply turning off the money and exp effects. The difference in lag is astounding.

@DeciDeci_ Жыл бұрын
Sorry to break it too you but this game doesn't really want you to break it at all. It has some of the most boring and restrictive passive items I've seen in a roguelike and he overhypes this game greatly.
@Beshar_ Жыл бұрын
@@DeciDeci_ +1 to that, I gave it a chance and after 11 hours of gameplay (with dlc) I had 2 runs where I could get multiple of the same item that actually did anything when stacked, both were common items and one made me regenerate health when not moving and second one was increasing my movement speed, nothing "gamebreaking", useful or at least fun. Also to get the items you have to farm enemies to get gold to open chests. And for the items with higher rarity - in most runs I don't even see them. Oh yeah and level design is as bland as it could be, you move around copy-pasted terrain, finding the teleporter to next level can easily take up to 15 minutes of running in circles because everything looks the same.

@@Beshar_this is just false information for the sake of bashing the game every item stacks its buffs in some way. They all might not be noticeable, but none of them do _nothing_ when stacked And if you don’t know what an item exactly does, thats what the item logs are for in the menu

@@DeciDeci_ risk of rain 2 is the only game that where consistently I was able to play the mini game of "how long can I go before this crashes". The item stacking get patently absurd. I've had games where for minutes on end I couldnt see what was happening on my screen because of how much clutter there was, and if I touched the keyboard I'd go flying off the map because of how much movement I've stacked. Saying the passives of items are bland is kinda revealing cause it misses the point of how the items work.
