This is a real tough one for me as it appears to be a very nasty growth and infection. I’ve been treating her for several days and my prognosis is 50/50 at best. If this is a growth and an infection it really compounds the issues. The large growth is now roughly the size of a pecan and incredibly vascular. I will continue to treat but do not have great feeling about her as there is possibly something worse going on inside her. K

I just love you, Kevin!!🥰💖🔥🙌🏾 I'm a woman and my kids are my partners in the hobby & ownership, so don't freak out, I'm female, lol 😂😂 I just love you SO MUCH!! I have quite a bit of veterinary schooling, training, and experience, and I'm tellin' ya, Kevin, you are a natural at this, and I thank God for you, I love animals, most especially reptiles and parrots & birds of prey, and it is REALLY HARD, sometimes almost IMPOSSIBLE, to find a veterinarian to work with me and all my animals, and yes, I do most my veterinary work on my animals, myself, as an example vet tech & assistant, and I can tell you've got this, hands down. Awesome job, guys!! 🥰🔥🔥🙌🏾🙌🏾

I think this is a bit harsh. I doubt vets don't want to help, but you can't have the same amount of knowledge about all animal species and reptiles are not the most common animals you see in vet practices. Luckily there are some vets that specialize in these animals.
@sarahhubbard5659
@sarahhubbard5659 3 жыл бұрын
@@nicolehenriksen4981 I know it may seem harsh, but it's reality in many areas. We often don't take into account insurance, licensing, and many other factors. It isn't a character flaw for many vets to say no. Our reality is there are very few qualified, experienced, affordable Vets to care for these animals.

I'm one of the veterinarians that watch your channel and I absolutely love all of your medical videos. That Boa is a very sad situation though. That mass could very well be a tumor and not just an abscess/granuloma. Only time will tell. Even though all of your medical knowledge is anecdotal, it's usually spot on. Thank you for all you do for the reptile community!!!
@NewEnglandReptile

Yes I was saying tumor too but wanted to get antibiotics doing it’s job and immune system going to get a better handle. Started gentomycin last Monday two shots in. Good news the infection does not appear septic as a white snake would turn pink. The tumor looks likely to be just that. Not an abscess as it’s not doing what they do. It’s incredibly vasculated and firm. Need more time in before I decide the next invasive action I am thinking. K

That’s how I’ve always felt about nursing. Everyone says “be a nurse, they make good money”. But it takes a special kind of person to be able to do that and not lose it. I’m not one of those. I’m too empathetic, it would absolutely kill me to constantly see people suffering and in pain. I do, however, have the utmost respect for those that can and do whether it be for animals or people.

Seeing people in pain is hard. Sometimes you can help and other times, you aren't able to do much. There have been many nights when I have been unable to sleep because of smething going on that day. Many tears have been shed with families, and alone as well. I love watching Kevin's teaching videos. The beautiful boa broke my heart, and I hope for a great prognosis.

@@janicemorelock5791 thanks for your years of service. I can’t imagine. My mom has been a respiratory therapist for over 40 years and she was usually able to deal with the sad cases except every once in awhile something would happen at home like our kitten dying one time that just was too much combined with a really depressing night at work. I love learning from these videos too. I don’t own any snakes but I used to be highly phobic of them until I watched enough of channels like Kevin and Snake Discovery that finally warmed me up to them. I actually picked up a little baby checkered garter snake the other evening to move him off the road so he wouldn’t get smushed and considering how scared shitless I used to be of them that’s a miracle lol.

I’m a licensed veterinary technician pursuing a specialty in exotic animal clinical practice. While I respect and admire your willingness to perform procedures on your animals, the large boa should have been taken to a veterinarian. I work in exotic animal practice and I have seen snakes develop oral tumors. The scary part is that with certain tumors (particularly mast cell tumors) poking and disturbing it can cause a cascade effect which will increase the rate of metastasis (cancer spreading). In the future, I would recommend taking a fine needle aspirate of the mass and checking for infectious material or cancerous cells under a microscope before attempting any further treatment. Doing this beforehand can help reduce trauma to the mouth and stress to the patient. Also, for patient comfort, general anesthesia to remove the mass by a licensed surgeon, whether it’s an abscess or tumor. Sending the mass to a pathologist for biopsy would definitely confirm it’s composition. Please keep us updated on the boa’s progress! I hope to see it recovering well in your next video!

@@NewEnglandReptile, Yep sadly even our Zoos are not allowed to keep snakes. Because of the fear, they will escape and decimate our birdlife and reptile species we have. Besides the Tuatara (the not-lizard) we do have really cool native geckos and skinks.. The Auckland Green Gecko looks like the four-legged cousin of Green Tree Python. It actually gets kind of crazy we are allowed some non-native species of lizards Bearded Dragons and Water Dragons blue tongue skinks and some turtles. However, we are not allowed to breed or own any of our countries native species. If you want to keep any of our native species the jump ropes to go through are quite insane. I've been very interested in the conservation of species done by many of you outside New Zealand. It really amazes me that the promotion of commercial breeding programs and private hobby collectors of species models that countries like my own can use to help these species.

Thanks I just love these videos. Where I live up north in Canada there is not one vet to look after snakes. Everything I've learned is through breeders. My snake was rescued and had gut rot and burnt his whole middle section from being on a high heat bed. Took 2 or 3 months to fix but always has a broken shed as there is a spot healed bad.

Poor little baby 🥺😭 My snake, a young Brown Rainbow Boa, she developed an unexplainable growth that is deviating her trachea. I’m a first time snake owner with her and I’ve only had her for about a year, now. I’ve spared no expense taking her to the vet and giving her medications. It’s honestly my worst nightmare! I’ve always been scared to give her shots and for about 2 months I had to give her shots and oral medications almost everyday. She did so good and is showing a lot of improvement but they’re still not sure what’s wrong but the swelling hasn’t come back and she’s got lots of energy and is happy to eat whatever I give her. It couldn’t have been a an injury from eating because she eats frozen thaw pinkies (from rodentpro). She cage pushes pretty aggressively when it’s time for her to be fed though so I worry that she caused trauma to her mandible and caused some sort of internal injury. X-rays, ultrasounds, and biopsies have discovered nothing useful. But I’m doing the best I can and she doesn’t seem to be uncomfortable or in pain. Watching you care for your animals gives me the strength and bravery I need to care for my baby Artemis.

Kevin I don't have a snake, I don't have anything medical backroundwise but your medical videos are always fascinating! So happy this channel isn't all about lunging snakes feeding etc~ There are enough of those videos out there really. Love how much time and effort you put into these snakes. Had abit of a laugh earlier when I watched the "I'm a professional", then gets bit in the chest and wrapped up video. Definitely agree that being safe and having the snakes not lunging at your hands is the most sensible for safety of both animal and staff and legal stuff. These medical and followup videos are very good to have. Long time ago when I was growing up, had bearded dragons and iguanas that ended up getting mites. Had no clue how to get rid of the mites, bath after bath they would remain. Never ever had an incident with bearded dragons or iguanas but I did have a blue tongue skink, I was about age 10 or so. Reached into the cage felt the sand and probably pissed it off. It bit me latching onto my finger, being 10 in a panic I pulled my arm back. In doing so though that broke the skinks back on the roof/wall of the cage shattering the cage glass everywhere, it then proceded to run round the house struggling. Havent really had any reptiles since! Glad you share the good and the bad that happens.

There could be No better example of why you should NEVER FEED YOUR SNAKES AND ALL OTHER REPTILES LIVE PREY!! This is a very common occurrence for people that just want to be badass and watch their snake kill something. You know what I'm saying is Right Kevin right? This poor thing looks like it's in such pain. Thank God it's in your capable hands. I don't know how you feel about this but I would imagine you agree with me. And if you don't that's your prerogative.
