Actually, in the US we make the sound "woof woof" for a dog. Bark or barking is just the name we give to what the dog does when making the sound. So, for example, if someone asked "what is that dog doing?" You could answer, "the dog is barking." And if they asked, "what does that barking sound like?" You could answer, "woof woof."

The name of the sound and the actual sound are two different things. If you asked an American what sound a horse makes, it is "neigh." If you ask how it sounds you would get an imitation of the sound. Dogs bark, chickens cluck, pigs oink. That is not what they sound like.
@jonasalexander3 жыл бұрын

"woof" "meow" "oink" and others are onomatopoeias. Basically just a way to represent a sound. For example : the cow went moo. Here Moo is an onomatopoeia. In different countries onomatopoeias are represented differently. In English for sneezing we say "achoo" right? In French it is "atchoum".

“What do we imitate to our kids?” Is what I ask. Think of all our kids songs. When we teach our kids, we say “cluck.” there’s no standardized way to spell … bawk… and we tend to go with what has standardized spelling. As the kids get older, we may shift more to the actual sound. But uh, idk where in the US she is from but dogs are “woof” from age 0-100. I’ve never heard any kids song that went “bark bark” or heard any baby or toddler call a dog a “bark”

The USA rep was self conscious I think. All sounds could’ve been better. Plus we say woof woof for dogs. Everyone should’ve said the animal name, the animal sound name, and then made the actual sound. So with pig, it would oink and then a sound similar to what the German guy did. Fun video though!
