When I was a child, I saw ocelots in a zoo. Being a dumb kid, I throw popcorn into their cages. They ate it with apparent enjoyment. (My mom's theory was that they liked the butter.) Since then, Ocelots have always been one of my all-time favorite animals. Gorgeous creatures!

I had one walk right up to my deer stand back in 95 in Freer Texas. He rolled around in the sand for a couple of minutes then disappeared back into the dense thicket. At first I didn’t know what I was watching then I found out that night that I had witnessed a once in a lifetime encounter. I will never forget it.

You may have misheard us. Ocelots are the largest members of their genus, not of all small cats. That said, ‘small cat’ is a colloquial umbrella term, not a scientific classification, and what is and isn’t considered a big or small cat is hotly debated. Some do consider cougars to be small cats, while many do not. Unlike “big cats” they can’t roar, but also, the males can weigh up to 100kg. Compared to around 15kg for an Ocelot, which is on the larger end of ‘small cats’. Hope this helps.

Many years ago, my aunt had an ocelot. It loved to sneak up from behind, jump, grab me by the neck, and start to play eating my throat. Oh, yep, great play for it, I really did not like it. Well.. My grandfather had a farm, and we had chickens there. One day, one by one they start to desapear. The farmkeeper thought it was ocelots, so he decide to ambush them out, scarting them, so they hardly return. He was in a plataform in a lonely tree by the hen house, watching carefully the forest ahead. And then it came the culprit: a jaguar. For his lucky, the jaguar didnt noticed him or didnt care, bu one thing is sure: he shat bricks that night.

I live in Brazil and there has always been Ocelots in the woods around my house from as long as i can remember.
