My cat used to pull the back legs off crickets and then let them go. I was so confused when I kept finding these weird, black bugs. It wasn't until I realized that they only had four legs each that I understood that they were really crickets. That and finding the abandoned cricket legs on the basement floor.

Our thoroughly domestic cat employs a mind control technique of hunting. He will sit and stare at me, then look toward his dish until I give him food. When I take him for walks on his leash, he tries it with birds and squirrels, too. His disgust at my inability to catch birds and squirrels for him is depressingly obvious.

I find it amazing and eerie that so many of these small cats resemble the domestic cat! I mean, if I were to run into some of these out in the wild my initial thoughts would be that it's just someone's house cat out on a prowl.

It's not an uncommon thought, I educate people on small cats at an AZA facility, we have 4 of these species, and almost every visitor comments on how some of them look like they're just house cats. Coincidentally, 2 of them *are* in the same Genus; Black Footed Cats and Sand Cats share the same Genus as House Cats, only separated by species! Felis Nigripes (Black Footed Cat), Felis Margarita (Sand Cat), and Felis Catus (House Cat)

As soon as you said “outside your window or under your bed” I knew it was gonna be the house cat :) I have a kitty and as far as I have had her. Her kill rate is 0% bc the one spider she actually tried to hunt, I had to vacuum, bc she thought it was under the door, and didn’t want to look when I showed her where it actually was…

While you certainly can't have one, you can check to see if any nearby accredited Zoos have them! In the USA, I know that the Greensboro Science Center, Hogle Zoo, Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, Living Desert Zoo, Birmingham Zoo, Brookfield Zoo, and a number of others have them. Also check out the Black Footed Cat Species Survival Plan and Working Group!

Thank you for highlighting the damage domestic cats can do! People often take it as a personal attack when I bring it up, like I'm criticizing them as a pet owner. I'm not! All I'm saying that keeping their cat indoors is a net positive for them, their cat's safety, and the environment. Cats are the single most invasive species on the planet; hopefully the more people figure that out the better things will get.

People need to fix their animals and support TNR programs in their communities. Chances are there is somewhere nearby that has problems with ferals, strays or cat colonies. Just finished going through trapping/TNR for 12/16 of the colony around my house. The other 4 will be done in January, hopefully.🤞😸
