Sadly #5 hit home with me, mostly from the beginning of the episode. There was one point when I was in college that I was entirely Squidward. My digital arts class was asked by the theater department to make a poster for their upcoming play and when we were done that they would pick one student's work to be used. I easily sunk 12 hours into my piece and my art professor who was excessively critical and always finds that one thing you need to tweak told me "Don't touch it" which is probably the best thing he could ever say to someone. However the theater department had a different opinion and tore into my piece calling it trash while pulling what they thought was art concepts out of their ass. And to make matters worse they picked the poster by the guy in the class who only started to put his together literally 10 minutes ago cause he forgot about the project entirely using nothing but Microsoft clip art and text. They told him it was an artful masterpiece which he decided to roll with, all while sporting a huge smile. I know that not all critics are this stupid and everything you said about the episode is very valid, but sadly I can personally say the critic in the episode does exist.

It was a very frustrating point in my life and I still look back at that with some lasting frustration, but I did learn an extremely valuable lesson about how to handle rejection and dumb clients. I always try to find a silver lining or at least take away a lesson to learn from the situation.

I watched season 5 with my friend in preparation for my review. After watching half the season, she literally groaned every single time Patrick Star appeared on screen. Weather he was doing anything wrong or not, just his face was enough to make her angry. THAT is how frustrating episodes like Pat no Pay are. The scariest part of all of this is that Patrick's horrible behavior is oddly realistic. There are plenty of people in real life who act EXACTLY like Patrick in on the bully-side episodes. "Yours mine and mine", "Patrick's Staycation" and "The Card" might seem absurd to some, but I have dealt with people in real life who act just like Patrick in those episodes. Yes, there are people in real life who are genuinely that horrible. It sounds a lot like how "Narcisists" are described.

Narcissism is instead a mindset of fulfilling your own need at the negligence or expense of the needs of others. It’s a basic instinct and not necessarily bad. But Narcissists usually have a mix of overinflated narcissism and an overinflated ego. The brand it takes in Patrick’s newer incarnations is a wish to fulfill his desires at the cost of others wants and needs, and in doing such massaging his ego. Narcissists usually expect no punishment for their actions, usually because they received none growing up. Squidward has an ego, sure, albeit a fragile ego rather than an overinflated one, but this usually shows up in him thinking he’s more important/talented than he actually is. (And to be fair, Squidward has some actual talent, as seen in the critic bit, and overinflated/fragile egos are common in the art world.) The worst it usually makes him do is overconfidence and shortness for SpongeBobs and Patrick’s antics. Squilliam is what Squidward would be if he was a narcissist. And Squiliam and post-movie Patrick actually share a scary number of traits.

But this...this pink starfish isn't even humane any more. His spirit is nothing like the Patrick we know. I agree with you, as many beloved and popular shows tend to go downhill when they overstay their welcome in the public eye. Though it may seem like true creativity is dying off, I don't feel it is lost, but merely drowned out and/or suppressed by what I'd like to label as "shiny, stupid, awkward shit". I might be hated for saying this, but to all those Mr.Enter haters out there (or to people who are just unsure of what a critic is supposed to do) I thought that a critic's job is to be 'critical' of something, which, in my brutally honest opinion, means to look at even the smallest detail and give out pointers on how to improve these, or to say why they are good. I just felt that I had to get this off my chest, as I feel that is what a critic is supposed to do, otherwise, how else are people supposed to improve? Not to mention that Mr.Enter is especially critical of cartoons, because kids are highly susceptible to the environment around them and their experiences, which includes watching cartoons, and most kids see these characters as role models. Here's what rubs salt into the wound on Pat No Pay: Mr. Krabs was not only being fair, he was actually being generous; he gave Patrick Krabby Patties w/ extra cheese, and because there was never an actual mention of a cost of the Krabby Patty during the entire episode, I can only assume that Mr. Krabs was going to charge Patrick for normal Krabby Patties w/ only one slice of cheese. See it any way you want to, but we never see Mr. Krabs trying to con Patrick out of more money by putting extra cheese on his Krabby Patty. 3 step process to fixing the "Toy Store of Doom". Step 1: Skip the filler, and go to them waiting in line for the store. Step 2: Actually have a "DOOM" in the ep. Say, the store was made from wood from the Flying Dutchman's old boat, causing it to be haunted during the night..... It's an idea. Step 3: Fighting. I can buy Spongebob and Patrick using bubbles, but have the bubbles DO SOMETHING. Like, have an impact on the toys, be it force or by causing the soap to make the toys slip and crash into stuff..... Or even making the bubbles short circuit some of the toys. Do all this, and you might actually have a good episode. Some cuts here and there, and it's perfect.... THIS COULD HAVE BEEN GREAT, GUYS!!! What’s even worse about “Oral Report” is that I just realized that it was one of three episodes nominated for the 2011 Kids Choice Awards. And it actually won, against The Penguins of Madagascar (which had higher ratings at the time). Think about it, that failure of an episode was good enough to be nominated and it won. That is just insulting. Seriously, the three Penguins of Madagascar nominated episodes ("Cute-Astophe": the one where Private becomes upset with Skipper when he begins abusing a newfound ability of Private - being able to knock people out using his cuteness. "King Julien for a Day": the one where King Julien and Skipper switch teams for a day in order to try and understand each other a bit more and end the negative connection between them. And "Maurice at Peace": the one where the penguins mistakenly believe that Maurice has only twenty-four hours to live and have to search for a certain flower) were of higher quality than that Patrick's a Prick episode.

I can see a way Big Sister Sam can be modified to be good: Instead of her being a heartless psychopath, be a misunderstood but understandably really strong sister and she starts to break down when her raw strength begins making things worse, especially since Squidward is accusing Sam of doing these intentionally similar to how the villagers saw Frankenstein's monster as someone heartless when he really wasn't originally, just hideous and really strong too. Sam eventually snaps and tries to beat up Squidward over it but then Patrick and SpongeBob get in the way and tell her they are aware of her problems but solving it by using brute force on another misunderstood creature isn't gonna solve the problems, it'll just make Sam a hypocrite. Sam then drops Squidward and uses her hard strength to put Squidward's bones back in place and notices the day of the reunion is over and she gives one big and crushing hug to all three before she goes to the bus and says, "See you in the next reunion... big bro." she winks and then it ends by the trio waving her goodbye, maybe ending with a joke of Squidward's tentacle breaking again and then he asks loudly, "Can you fix my arm again?" Can this work?

Well unlike the writers during these Pre-Hillenburg-coming-back seasons, I care about my characters. If I want karma to come at them, they can if they deserve it. And at times, they do suffer, but that's because many can see them as a threat. Take a look at one OC of mine Derp Muleta. She's 7 years old and was taken to become part of a hideous experiment to become an inverted clone of Dark Amulet, my main character. The name was supposed to be an intentional insult similar to Bizzaro and Superman, but unlike Bizzaro, Derp is aware of her problems and tries to be a hero to avoid going down the dark path her creator has become. It's made even more dynamic from the fact her left side of her face is infected by the negative emotions from both Dark and herself named Red, who constantly tries to make Derp give in and let Red take over entirely, only to realize later on they need each other. What good is a concept if there's no counteraction? It's like having a story where a character never has to deal with a villain. And there are things keeping the two together such as bravery and pride as at times, things can't truly be defined in a certain way. Now, they're fine sharing the body and understand their philosophies. It's like those stories where the main characters help the villain redeem themselves to become an ally instead of just beating them to death because they're evil.

It's made very clear to the viewer what's going on, with constant references to it (that whole line about idiots being blissfully unaware of how stupid they really are). The upsetting bit really is that Spongebob is being made a to look like a fool in front of Patrick's parents- but it turns out they're not even his parents anyways, so it doesn't really matter in the end. Spongebob looks stupid in front of some random starfish, but Patrick looks stupid to the audience. But of course, that's just my interpretation. I am definitely biased by nostalgia, and I'll admit this was never one of my favourites either, so I'm not gonna disagree with you. Just offering my point of view :)

You could’ve easily made the episode with Patrick’s sister work by having Patrick react to the destruction but make it clear he doesn’t want to upset his sister. Like, he mentions losing her when they were kids so he’s trying to make her visit perfect as he’s meeting her for the first time in years. I really don't think the "boating school" concept was necessary for SpongeBob in the first place. The writers only put it in so that kids might relate to going to school, except SpongeBob was too old. But the show was just fine without it. If you're going to make it a running gag where SpongeBob never gets his license, there's only so many good jokes you can make out of that unless you want this show to have some growth and changes over time. Which the writers don't.

jack ludolph What's worse is that most writers actually KNOW when characters are unlikable. In the early drafts of Toy Story, the writers realized that Woody was such an unlikable dick that he pretty much deemed the whole movie unwatchable (And the test audience said that they didn't want to see him grow and learn his lesson, they just wanted him dead), and so, they rewrote the whole script to make Woody more likable. The writers of modern SpongeBob probably don't know they've made SpongeBob, Patrick, and Mr. Krabs unlikable. Or, they DO know, and just don't care.

Yeah, Squidward acts like an ass, yeah, Spongebob pushes Gary to near-death, but it's hilarious on the way there and the ending rights the wrongs. Squidward loses the race, Gary gets the girl, Spongebob learns not to push people past their limits, Patrick acts very altruistically and has the trophy engraved for Squidward, it was misspelled, but Squid laughed it off, and Sandy kicked Spongebob's ass for being sexist. Everybody won in the end. Good, solid episode.

I know it's doubtful, but I hope the creators of this show realize the damage they've done to Patrick with that single line in The Card. I remember as a kid Patrick being one of my favorite characters, both pre movie and even a little bit post movie. But after hearing that, I can't see him as the same lovable idiot anymore. Now all I see is a horrific monster deliberately causing pain for all the people he pretends to call friends. While this is the type of cartoon that doesn't have z long term story and is just purely episodic, like enter said, this line has a drastic effect throughout the entirety of the series.

There's an theory in the comment section that I feel really makes sense in season 6-8. Perhaps the Patrick that WE KNEW is in the episodes where he is genuinely nice but in patrick's a prick episodes after Karate Star, The Horrible and Sociopathic Patrick is the One who grew from the Hand Patrick Ripped off. And this one's goal is 2 things. Destroy, and Cause misery. Like the classic evil clone storyline but it persists through out 2-3 seasons. My ending for I'm With Stupid: Patrick says one final line, and Spongebob can't take it anymore. He runs off. Patricks' parents call him an idiot again. Suddenly, he starts to realize that the only reason his parents were not calling him an idiot was because of Spongebob. Patrick runs out to get Spongebob back. He begs, and does everything he can. Spongebob tells him off, and Patrick considers it. He tells Spongebob that he's stupid and that Spongebob should not have to do that. But then Spongebob tells him that it does not matter, and that as long as he does not hurt anyone, it will be fine.

Here's how I would have done Karate Star. As Patrick begins using his new found skills more and more, he gets more and more arrogant and destructive, eventually prompting SpongeBob to call him out and face him in combat. Despite his best efforts SpongeBob is unable to defeat Patrick, relenting that he's created a monster. With no other options left, SpongeBob turns to the only person who is skilled enough to defeat Patrick, Sandy. Have Sandy challenge Patrick, who gloats arrogantly, then have Sandy totally kick his ass and humble him. By the end of the episode Patrick apologizes for his assholery and promise not to let power go to his head ever again.
