This is why network TV is dying. Look at pre-1990s TV. Sitcom episodes routinely ran 24-25 minutes or even more prior to the 1980s. Now, they barely reach the 22-minute mark. Time that used to be used for plot resolution is now used for advertising.

The whole idea of abusing the status quo and never having characters learn anything _really_ gets on my nerves. It's probably the laziest way ever to write a comedy.
@LibraGamesUnlimited7 жыл бұрын
Oh I know, worst example of this was the episode where they were all stuck in the house due to a hurricane or tornado or whatever it was. Meg finally stood up for herself, put the whole family in their places and set things right. Then, for some B.S. reasoning that boils down to "have to re-establish the status quo" they had her take it all back and everything returns to normal. Not only does it suck because her telling them off was right and a long time in coming but it also made the whole episode pointless. The only thing going on in the whole episode (aside from some weak story about Brian eating mushrooms and having a bad trip) and it's made moot by the end. By far the worst installment of that whole shared story between the shows (followed a close second by "The Cleveland Show" episode where they spend the whole episode browbeating Junior for not beveling in God (depsite not showing any outward sign of being religious themselves and even taking some hard shots at people who are, from the characters who say they're religious, especially Donna), then, when Junior saves the day they give God all the credit and pretends to agree to resolve the issue. In fact the only really good story was the "American Dad" one where Stan kept insisting on being in charge and making all the decisions for his family, all of the making things worse. Add to that the bit about Roger trying to get rid of a clingy one night stand and Steve driving everyone nuts showing off what he's learned about architecture. It was the only one that was actually funny and had a point.

You know how this episode would be so much better? *Brain texting on the couch when his phone instead plays a jingle. He taps the screen and answers.* Brian: "Hello?" *A few seconds of silence, Brain going bug-eyed halfway through.* Brian: "Dylan? Why are you calling?" Stewie: "Dylan? Your son? Haven't heard you mention him in ages!" Brian: "Yeah, I try to keep our interactions private; it's the closest thing we can get to some father-son time." *time passes* Brian: *texts* You never told me that you were going to be on a sitcom! Dylan: Do you ever listen to your voicemails? *quick harmless cutaway to Brain clearing his voicemail cache* Brian: *texts* ... Oops. *cut interaction with Brian and Dylan* *and then proceed with the episode as normal, Dylan also ratting Brian out for being alcoholic, overzealous and BRIAN.* This. This would show Brian as a responsible parent, give an explanation as to why we haven't heard from him for a good while, and actually give Brian some humility; something he NEEDS. And there's no salvaging Peter's arc, just extend Brian's storyline to cover 22 minutes.

The wrist slitting joke is even worse than just telling kids how to self harm. In 10th grade, there was this group of kids who were talking about how kids that struggle with self harm are just attention whores because "like they said on Family Guy, across for attention!" Mind you, these kids were saying this stuff about other students. This joke gave them "proof" that their reason for gossiping and bullying was legitimate and promoted the idea that self harm isn't a real problem.

TheNumberedAgent2 The people who choose that are already emotionally vulnerable, often bullied and coming from a bad home, and in an age when they are pretty impressionable. There is a reason we do not try 14 years olds as adults for crimes, damnit, blame their parents, blame their school, but its more complex than them being "idiots", and Family Guy only makes stuff worse in an attempt to be edgy. Sure, you didn't do it, but depression isn't the only factor that cause one to do that. In fact, lack of attention - which, despite what idiots on the internet would have you think, is a real problem especially for teenagers, and desperate cries for attention is not attention whoring, but a sign of neglect- is more likely to cause self harm than genuine depression (which will probably make you want a painless suicide or nothing, most of the time). Most of the people who self cut have no real friends and a neglectful or abusive family , plus teachers who just do not care, and Family Guy is actively making their life more miserable by shoving this joke on their impresionable asses.

@quinnalexander38257 жыл бұрын
It's stupid. Cutting isn't about suicide or attention or 'results'. Self harm is mostly, if not solely, about self-punishment due to some sad idea that they've somehow done wrong by existing, brought on by bullying. They don't feel they deserve comfort, that the bullying is somehow their own fault, and so they cause themselves pain to 'punish themselves'. It's really sad and the fact Family Guy doesn't know this is disgusting.

Even if it's your own family." Diane gives her family another chance after a lifetime of abuse, thinking that the death of their father would make them more grateful for the family they still have. But they don't change; they're as awful as ever. At the end she decides not to forgive her family and leave them behind for good. Her life becomes better for having done this. they cant do heartwarming for a few reasons: 1. family guy is really only driven on its jokes and always has. the plots have always really just been methods to enact new jokes/situations. making an episode based on an actual plot requires you to be primed to take things seriously. 2. the jokes are quite often dark anyway so dark situations cant be taken seriously. meg's entire character for instance is being constantly abused. every character's pain and suffering from the get go is primed for being another joke. 3. a show like rick and morty can be dark but its based more so on absurdity. the characters can be assholes but they are characters. family guy characters are only barely characters. they have about as much depth as that priest and rabbi that walk into a bar.

@Dez8617 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry ... I came off as rude in a previous reply. Allow me to explain, I understand that the job of a comedian is to subvert people's expectations and use shock value as a tool for humor. I should point out that I find the work of Louie CK and Chris Rock to be absolutely brilliant at times. In it's earlier years, I really enjoyed Family Guy and had a lot of respect for Seth McFarland. I'm also physically disabled - a demographic that was - and still is - repeatedly poked at in the show in an effort to get laughs. Did I find these jokes funny? Not really. Was I a little insulted? Sure. But, I understood the point of including these elements - to entertain, to get laughs. If a comedian hasn't offended someone in their career at least once, then in my opinion - they haven't done their job. But, when Family Guy preaches it isn't trying to shock or subvert anymore, it isn't trying to be 'edgy' or funny or get laughs - it's trying to discuss a serious topic in a serious way with its audience - and, when the writers of the show have no experience with/ knowledge about a particular issue and try to add its two cents - it just comes off as idiotic, dangerous and really kind of painful to audience members that may be dealing with these issues. Let me put it this way, if Family Guy were a person - a psychiatrist tasked with helping preserve the mental well being of those in need, it would've had its license revoked a long time ago.
@Dez8617 жыл бұрын
Turquoise Cheetah I agree. But, there's a difference between a joke in poor taste, and an attempt to deliver a serious message being done poorly. South Park, as you pointed out, has a healthy balance of humor and serious commentary. Matt Stone and Trey Parker create satire so well because in regard to the issues, they're actually aware of their own views, certain implications, and they know what in Sam fuck they're talking about unlike the writers of Family Guy. Did this episode anger me? Yes. Did the world stop turning because of a botched moral? Not at all. But, just as you have a right to be offended by a shitty portrayal of a rapist or rape victim on some made for TV movie, I have a right to be offended by this episode. Why? Two reasons. One: I thinks it has knowledge that it clearly doesn't, and wants to be taken seriously. And Two (the much more egregious offense): It stated, point blank in this very episode, that it knows it appeals to fourteen year olds. As Enter pointed out - impressionable kids. If I can watch this as an adult and feel hurt by its backward attempt at a moral, I can only imagine how they must feel watching it. My main point was, there is a difference between something perverse done for laughs because the intent is merely to entertain. When something is done poorly to influence opinion, provide commentary, or give advice to an impressionable or afflicted audience that's when a problem occurs, that's where a line is drawn. There's no saving the show at this point in terms of comedic value or elsewhere - but, all anyone is asking is that it just sticks to the idiotic humor and leaves real world commentary to people who are smart/experienced enough to write it.

Its a means of escape or release from a variety of issues that the person is facing, like depression as mr. Enter said, which is why the demographic of 14yr olds is so prone to self harm. The peter and the knife joke just urks me to such an unbearable degree that i had to vent about it

PPG reboot was cancelled in 2052 when they made a character resembling Anita Sarkeesian's daughter, Tan, and it got so much heat on Tumblr (Yes, it still exists.) The PC phase was finally over in 2043 when a few men told them they''d stop their sexist ways if the PC police would shut up. They've finally made peace with each other. And for the record, Alex Jones was thrown in jail 3 months ago.

I want to add another layer to how AWFUL the cutting "joke" is in this episode. They specifically say "horizontal for ATTENTION." This is adding to the stupid mentality that if someone is self-harming, they're doing it for attention so people will feel sorry for them. If someone who actually self-harms hears this, they may start to believe they're only doing it for attention and feel WORSE because of it. The "joke" is harmful and it makes me disgusted hearing it. Also, thanks Mr. Enter. I had actually heard this "joke" before but washed it out of my brain. Damn this show for not letting me forget about it.
@PhoenixRising877 жыл бұрын
I used to cut. I'll be 30 next month, and the last time I did it was within this past year, so it wasn't just me being an "emotional teenage drama queen." I actually have major depressive disorder and anxiety issues, and those together are a nightmare sometimes (since at their worst, the former makes you numb to everything, and the latter makes you a nervous wreck afraid of everything that could possibly go wrong ever). The reason I cut was purely as a learned coping mechanism. I went through times when I was feeling so much...shittiness inside my psyche that I just needed something to distract myself from it. Physical pain, even in its smallest amount, helped with that, which is why I started cutting. I managed to unlearn it (and took up other coping skills, like deep breathing and drawing on my arms with Sharpies instead of cutting), but I really can't stand "jokes" like that. As a teenager, I was often accused of faking my depression symptoms for attention, and I honestly think I didn't get the most help I needed because of it.

Isn't the whole "stupid teens for attention" thing in the first place just a ridiculous excuse? Like... the world makes itself so shitty that an entire generation of people tend toward self-harm (as well as people outside of that generation doing so too, but having been around for longer and having more typical independance than teens probably knowing how to hide it better... therefore teens get the focus), and its reaction isn't "holy fuck we've gone so seriously off course we're actually dieing from it... we need to fix this NOW" like it should be... instead its reaction is "pff... people, amirite?" like an asshole. Like... if someone were to be actually cutting for attention, then... well, why ARE they seeking attention? There's a reason behind the craving of attention, even in that. Why be dismissive toward it? Why laugh it off? That's the opposite of what needs to happen. Why are people so fragile that they can't deal with the idea of the other person 'winning' by getting that attention? Maybe they need that attention. What's wrong with that? I know it's not typically true in the first place, I'm just saying what a disgusting reaction to default to, even if it were true.
@Thomasmemoryscentral7 жыл бұрын
Here's another thing disgusting on the cutting joke. When Meg of all people tells Peter the way for self cutting properly, the episode makes it like you need to cut yourself in a certain way to gain attention. I'm pretty sure if people saw you with BLEEDING WRISTS THEY'D PAY YOU ATTEMTION WITH CONCERN FOR YOUR MENTAL STATE! Btw episode, Peter is not getting sympathy for purposefully shooting Quagmire, THINK! Plus why have Meg of all people tell Peter that? Hadn't she suffered enough already?

@tjm6447 жыл бұрын
That is not the direct reason Family Guy is what it is today. The show would have been cancelled all the way back in 2007 or so, give or take, however people wanted more, so Fox brought it back, twice! It was around this point that MacFarlane probably realized he could probably literally live off the show for the rest of his career. So, in essence it is as much the audiences fault, if not more, that the creators and/or the producers that the life of generally any content goes on past its prime and still go on with little to nothing produced after its prime to be enjoyable in the long run. People showed those in charge the content makes them profitable and why would any sane person kill a goose that lays golden eggs.

I think it's pretty telling of the show's writing as a whole that, from what I can see, Seth McFarlane uses Brian more than any other character to express his own worldviews and opinions. And considering he's arguably the most detestable character IN the show... that probably says something about the entire show's motivations and focus.
@Maybethistime156 жыл бұрын
That was exactly how Seth used Brian in the earlier episodes. And that used to work. The problem is that now he has stopped being involved in creating the show and and only does the voices. And the writers now have no idea how to write for him and its so easy to just make him an asshole. The show has no idea what it’s doing any more and it’s kinda sad tbh

it's funny, my biological other half whom I hesitate to call a father tried to come into my life 20 years later in my life. he's an ass. He's extremely racist, he's extremely xenophobic, hypocritical (I mean he once made a post calling out women who leave their children to their dads and never coming back when he literally did that to mom and I), homophobic (I never told him that I am dating another girl for that reason), and believes in all the political conspiracies. And he's illiterate as heck. The only reason mom liked him back in the day was because he was cute. Fair enough. and yet, I gave him a chance to redeem himself despite having a step-dad who I consider my real father now. I got angry at his oh so wrong it hurts political posts (he was the type who'd believe The Onion's articles and call your legitimate sources fake) but never commented on them. If I did, it'd be pointless. But he got into an argument with mom. I told that I was on her side and agreed with her. He called me closed-minded and "take off the rose colored glasses". He called my cousin, who has a PhD, a moron and blamed her for his calling her a moron after I called him out. "if she didn't wanna be called that, she shouldn't have made her post". No, she was trying to correct you, you ass... After he tried to assure me that he doesn't have anger issues, I told him "You know who does? I do. I have serious anger issues! but I don't go out blaming my anger out on other people. Maybe if you didn't wanna be called out, you shouldn't have made your comments!" He blocked me the next day. But he was right, I was wearing the rose colored glasses. Not because of politics, but because I thought he was going to be a better person. I'm sorry about that, this episode of "He's your father, would you rather not take any risks at all?" message infuriates me. because I tried. For those with all the Brians out in the world, if they don't care about you, they're not worth your time. Be better than them, be strong because there are people out there who are willing to help. Stay strong and I hope you can escape them. I'm lucky this was just a Facebook fight. Not everyone has that luxury.

+JGB Creations-Actually to me, looking back, it was Love, Blacktually (and the title is cringeworthy enough to indicate what kind of episode it is.) Same season mind you, but it was in this episode where Brian came out as an atheist (because Seth MacFarland "coincidentally" is an atheist too. . .Who would've thought) when. . .it was never established Brian veered into an theoretical/philosophical/religious territory before. He falls in love with a woman he barely knows, a woman who CLEARLY isn't interested in him anymore, even cheated on him, but he can't take a hint and is outright stalkerish with wanting to get back together with her. . .despite that she cheated on him. And he's willing to manipulate a supposedly good friend with getting back together with his ex wife who cheated on him so he could score with the woman who cheated on him. Screw you. You can even argue Brian became unlikable all the way back in Play It Again Brian where he takes YET another pass at Lois, despite before, being smart enough to realize Lois is married and they won't ever be able to work out but Love, Blacktually was where I noticed something was truly wrong. (Basically, the recurring storyline that Brian was "unlucky in love" and fell in love with the wrong women-blah blah blah-was tired at best.) But Not All Dogs Go to Heaven was REALLY where Brian fell into being a vindictive ass. He took it WAY too far. To be fair, Meg took it way too far when she became an evangelist (because subtlety? What's that-asks Family Guy writers) but his problems always stemmed not particularly because Meg was taking too far, but because she believed in a religion HE didn't agree with. That was all it took. Because how dare someone believe in something you don't? They are mindless sheep that must be publicly flogged for being the idiots are? Naturally, that's exactly what Brian does and even goes so far as to be truly mean and vindictive as to say there can't be a God because Meg is ugly and her family is mean to her. Like, literally, what the. . .actual fuck? And Brian completely tears down Meg and shatters her belief, knowing her family verbally and physically abuses her, that there is someone out there that does truly love her. Even if it's God, WHY would you take that away from anyone? How evil do you have to be not only to tear down someone else's religious beliefs that don't align with yours but to even tell that person God, a benevolent, merciful being that loves you, that you hope someone CAN love you at all, can't and doesn't exist? That. . .that is just plain UGLY.
@hariman77276 жыл бұрын
There is a point where Brian and Stewie go from opposites and opposed to each other, to agreeing with each other and commandeering a tank to destroy a Walmart. That's the beginning of Brian's downfall. Also, I've experienced people literally saying to my face that they think religion is crazy, or stupid, to my face. Or going "but your religion defended child molesters!", or "but the crusades/inquisition!", or "But you're a bigot because religion bad!". Okay, that last one is more of paraphrasing of more general views that come through the mainstream news. The rest? All pretty much quoting people. So... yeah. As much as people complain about "getting religion shoved in their face"... I get to deal with people calling me and my faith stupid, crazy, and focusing on the absolute worst moments of the Christian Church, while ignoring the message behind the religion, AND ignoring the good done by the religious over the centuries. Stories like catholic priests who put their lives on the line to smuggle Jews out of nazi occupied territory, or who spend years on Missions helping people, putting their own lives aside for their Mission, and so many more examples.

The "joke" about cutting really got to me. When I first saw this episode, I was in a really bad place with my depression. I had tried committing suicide multiple times, and now I knew a way to try it again hopefully with results. Even now as I'm recovering and it seems as if I'm not suicidal anymore (thanks to medicine and therapy), I still have this knowledge, this way to know how to end it all. I would be fine with this being in an episode of a TV show if it were about someone who was seriously trying to kill themselves, but was given the support they needed and all that. If it wasn't treated like a joke. Family Guy is my motivation to make an adult cartoon. I want to right the wrongs it made. I want to have characters that have heart, that genuinely care for one another, despite their faults. Humans are flawed, which is what makes us human, but what else makes us human is our ability to care for and love one another, to feel sympathy and empathy, and to realize when a joke can seriously damage an impressionable teenager who's already trying to kill himself and now you've given him another way to do it.

But screw him and his intentions, and imagine the *consequences* of someone hiring a ghostwriter whose works eventually turn out to be more and more abhorrent. That person would probably have their career irreparably torn apart. And attempting to solve it by revealing that he HAS a ghostwriter at that moment would likely be treated as an excuse to pass the blame and just make things worse, among other issues. The abhorrent ghostwriter wouldn't be the central focus or a source of comedy. It would be the antagonist.

I honestly don't get the hate on Enter. He speaks the truth, mate. Family Guy is just shit at this point. It wasn't even anything special when it started, but now... NOW.... holy shit now.... It has just become intolerable. All the characters hate each other, and when the writers decide we need more sympathy towards them, they make episodes like Life Of Brian, where characters that have been neglectful, abusive, or just plain wrathful towards each other come together in a "emotional" moment and mourn their dog's death. Okay, that could actually come across as emotional, if they weren't still complete assholes to each other! The Griffin family just shrugs off this life-changing moment and CONTINUE HATING EACH OTHER. If that wasn't enough for ya though, Brian was revived. Wow. Way to solidify the fact that Life Of Brian was only for ratings. Jesus. Rant over.

And if you're saying that it's a comedy show... whoa ho ho have you got it twisted. Firstly, most of the humor is from cut-away gags. Not to say that cut-away gags are completely unfunny, hell no. The Critic used them masterfully. Family guy, however, uses them when they write themselves into a corner and can't tell any good jokes. They disrupt the plot there, because they have no relation to what is happening and basically are just brought up out of nowhere with no relevance to the situation at hand. Secondly, the animation in the normal jokes is completely lazy. The characters quickly flash between movements in Family Guy, and most of the time, the only movement is with the mouths, making the animators closer to that paycheck by having to do less work.

midbus does things The episode was called "Life of Brian," not "Not All Dogs Go To Heaven."

Nylocke Dragon of the Cold Steel That's something that annoys me. When someone still gets flack for something that they did in the past, even though they've improved since then.

Troin Glad you agree. Hell I met one person who said Enter was an asshole for what he did back in the day, I told her how he apologized and improved and said she didn't care and still called him an asshole, AFTER she said she was glad he apologized

You poor guy, I'm so sorry you have to put up with all this. I'm not even done watching this, but I can hear the pain in your voice.
