I would had loved to read one of those books John talked about but I have to be real with everyone... I have never seen those books before and didn't know they even existed until a few months ago... and I'm in college now. I don't think I ever saw any of these books in my book fairs as I grew up and I would typically try and find a quick and easy book to buy from them. My schools as I grew up didn't have these either, nor any of the teachers. Its not exactly a Dr Sues popular book. In fact, I learned of many other books besides these in my library. I'd be dumb founded to even go to my local library and find one of those in their archives and (lastly) its not something Barns and Nobel or other book stores put out front for kids... But I do want more people to read these if they are as good as John says.

Todd's actually the main reason I love the show. He's literally the perfect character in my perspective. He goes to a school where he has to scale thirty floors each day and then scale them again at noon because he's sent home early. However, that doesn't stop him from working EXTREMELY hard to be the best student he possibly can be. In one episode he did all his homework until graduation just to keep Mrs. Jewls from leaving Wayside. In another he was principal for a day and made many drastic improvements to the entire building while not once stopping to worry about his own personal benefits. Furthermore despite constant abuse from Maurecia, dealing with Myron's idiocy, sitting through Dana's stupid rule analysis, and getting sent home early for doing nothing wrong, he still moves on with a positive attitude! I think making Todd the main character was a great idea because it could motivate small children that they can still be successful through pain and humiliation. I have no idea why they chose Todd either but they portrayed his character really well and I find him truly inspiring. His positive attitude, powerful endurance, and the bravery to face tough challenges daily make him the best student anyone could hope to have and there is no mistake in centering a show on a character like that. QED

True, but Animated Atrocities #14 taught me "It is not noble to take someone else's s**t and abuse" so I really think Todd should have made Mrs. Jewels leave Wayside for sending him home early for no reason. I dunno why she so mean to him. November 15, 2019, 3:53am

The issue is just that the Show always spits on it. Usually if you have a Charakter like this - you want them to succeed. If the show does not want that, they STILL have to make the Charakter succeed, or see when tropes get boring. Like the whole "Hes always in trouble and always have to go home with the Kindergarden bus" schtick. It gets old. Also the whole "Missunderstandings from adults that make the Child MC miserable" can only go so far - it gets annyoing very quickly.

personally, i liked the simple aesthetic in Total Drama. i don't think it's a style that every show should have, but it was fitting for that one. it's a cartoon making fun of reality tv. it fits to give the characters close to human proportions (i say "close" because the heads don't always seem the right size for the bodies) while keeping it cartoonish in art-style. i think that if it looked more real or anime-like, some of the comedy wouldn't been as funny.

This comment will probably get buried right now, but I'm going to try to shed some light on "Canadian cartoons" and why they tend to suck. Canada has Canadian Content laws for television broadcasters. Basically, at least 60% of content on any given channel must have Canadian origins or at least some sort of Canadian involvement. Unfortunately, this results in a lot of very low-budget productions making it to air because they don't have to compete with productions from other countries in terms of quality. Now, admittedly, part of the reason CanCon exists is because Canada's population is so small that our entertainment industry just doesn't HAVE the budget to compete with, say, the US and the UK, but when a channel is trying to fill 60% of its slots with Canadian Content you're bound to get plenty of stinkers that only exist to meet the CanCon requirements. This is also why we had knock-off channels like Teletoon, YTV, and Family that showed Disney, Nick, and Cartoon Network shows rather than having those channels air in Canada (although IIRC that's changed lately). That's not to say there's no good CanCon, of course. But Teletoon was particularly notorious for producing crappy CanCon because it was a "cartoons only" channel with no live action. YTV and Family weren't "cartoon-only" channels, and a lot of their actually good shows ended up being live action, like Dark Oracle or Are You Afraid of the Dark, or fun game shows like Uh-Oh. Live action shows had a smaller budget and could often continue longer and be more plot-focused than the animated shows that could be made with the same budget. Teletoon, being animation-only, was (and still is) notorious for producing shows with 13 episode runs and then airing them over and over and over and over again to meet the CanCon requirements. A single 13-episode show could have a primetime slot every weekday night for 3+ YEARS. This was especially true with adult cartoons, which tended to be awful. Look at Crash Canyon and Fugget About It. Unfortunately a lot of our better shows were international productions and whether or not the show was cancelled rested entirely with the international partner. Teletoon LOVED Clone High and wanted to continue the show, but just didn't have the budget after MTV pulled out. Look up "Canadian Content rules" for more context. IIRC these restrictions have been relaxed lately, which has allowed for Canada to finally get channels like Nick and Disney, but it gives a lot of context to Canadian animation pre-2015.

I have an idea of how they could have made this cartoon work from a story-telling perspective. It may be strange, but hear me out: 1: Have the main character be Ben/Mark and not Todd. 2: Have the first episode be based on the chapter where Ben/Mark joins Mrs. Jewels' class. 3: Have the second episode be based on the Chapter with Mrs. Gorf, wherein one of Ben/Mark's classmates explains what she was like through flashback. 4: Have every subsequent episode be based on the chapters that followed, with Ben/Mark's classmates explaining what school was like up until he joined. The list goes on.

thinking about it, the way the show could've made the connection between Myon's character from the book and the TV show Myron is this: basically keep all the back story about how he lost his class presidency, and have THAT be the reason he's become a selfish lazy brat. "I lost my presidency because I cared about the well being about Dana's dog! So why should I bother?!" It's honestly so unbelievably simple that I'm shocked the show didn't do that.

Ugh...this show was such a disappointment. On it's own, it's just a bland, mediocre mid-2000s cartoon. As an adaptation, it's even worse. I loved the Wayside School books when I was in elementary school. By the time the show started airing on Nick, I was already outgrowing the channel but wanted to give the show a look anyway because hey- it was an adaptation of my favorite books as a kid! And what we got was...a real letdown. I always felt like the series was REALLY easy to adapt to TV form; they took a perfect opportunity and threw it out for unnecessary changes and stock cartoon cliches. Nothing more annoying than wasted potential.

I'm from Canada currently taking a broadcasting and film course. When I was at Chorus Entertainment (the company who owns Teletoon), their attitude towards there work was incredibly corporate. They focused more on appealing to their target demographics rather than trying to make anything of artistic merit (they really emphasise their appeal to women and children). It also doesn't help that Canada has the CRTC which requires broadcasters to show 60% Canadian content on their channels, so these cartoons are essentially mandated.

totally spies was produced by marathon media. i think it just aired in Canada and was made in france like martin mystery and lolirock. if i'm wrong about this sorry because their is a huge difference in animation quality between shows like totally spies and total drama kinda hard to think their were made in the same studio

You're right, actually! Totally Spies! was made by a French studio called Marathon and was brought over to Teletoon around 2002 or so (I think it aired in Europe and the US first). Total Drama was made by Fresh TV and its animation is somewhat of an anomaly when compared to its other cartoons. The cartoon the studio was working on before it (6teen) had a style that looked very different and sported no outlines, and that style was later used for another show, Stoked. Their other cartoon, Grojband, is animated a bit closer to Sidekick style-wise. I don't have a fucking clue where they got the idea for Total Drama's art style from.

Double standards? This happens to thousands of little girls across Canada every day Stephen. Theyre bullied by boys and when they tell a parent or a teacher theyre told "aw sweetie, he just likes you!". Does it happen it boys? Yes of course it does. But it is more likely to happen to girls statistically because girls are shyer and boys are more careless at that age. Have you ever heard of hair pulling? Boys in schools will do this do Girls constantly and its never addressed as harassment or bullying by adults but as "aww he just likes you :) "

Holy shit! When you where talking about how timeless the books were it got me thinking about a book we read as a class in Middle School. It was called "There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom". I'm from England but I remembered that the book was set in America and it was so timeless that I didn't know it was released in the 80s. I looked it up and what do you know, it was written by Louis Sachar as well. This guy's a really damn good writer.

Nachover 9000 I think DHX is a Canadian company. Because of this, all the voice actors have to be Canadian as well (to protect them from being screwed over by American voice actors), and thus most of them are based out of Vancouver. Tara Strong's the only one part of the main (or mane haha) cast in LA, but she was born in Canada so she still qualifies. It's why she's part of a lot of Canadian content, like Xiaolin Chronicles and MLP FiM.

13:20 This is one of my major problems with not just animation, but entertainment in general. I hate it when a female character (who might actually be one of the main ones) constantly hits the male protagonist out of sheer comedy. The Tsundere trope is so overused to the point where it gets tiring and passé. It's the equivalent to jump scares and gross-out humor, some might find enjoyment out of it, while others (such as myself) feel really uncomfortable and would probably hate the overall character as a result. I'm not saying that _every_ female character has to be the shy or spunky girl who's extremely positive 95% of the time, diversity is great and all, but I feel like there should be more than just "girl hits boy because it's funny." And even then, I feel like that more nicer characters should be in the limelight a little more than the hyper-violent overly aggressive types.

Which is why I couldn't get into things like Neon Genesis Evangelion or Toradora, both are good shows don't get me wrong, but I just didn't like the Tsundere characters. And I was pretty let down by the ending to the manga of Nisekoi, because Chitoge (the Tsundere) won instead of Onodera (even though she was originally the promise girl), which is why I only watch the anime and never acknowledge the manga. I just don't like Tsunderes, and I never will.

He's talking about this show that spits in the face of the books that practically shaped his character, and that have a special place in his heart. The animation itself is solid, but the appearance does look a tad cheap in my opinion (this coming from someone who does really like the show). That being said, it's very distinct in its own right and has both good and bad qualities to it. There's been some pretty bad animation errors in regards to its character modeling, but I do like the variety of shapes, heights, etc. It also feels cheap compared to some of the other shows that the same production company has made (6teen and Stoked).

vcom741 Total Drama's style works in its favour. It's not a soft show so the thick lines are actually pretty fitting. While it can appear stilted or "cheap", it still manages to look pretty good in action scenes, which I appreciate (making Flash expressive is hard haha). And to be fair, Steven Universe is supposed to have good animation but even then, it's riddled with weird inconsistencies. So there's nothing wrong with liking the style, even if someone else called it "bad"!

Well MrEnter I wanted to say thank you for this review. I too enjoyed the Wayside books immensely, I still remember being in my school's library curled in a chair as I read the wacky adventures of the class on the 30th floor, the nonexistence of the 19th floor and Ms. Zarves, the way Joy stole her classmates' lunches, the way that one kid was kicked over a fence and the ghost of Ms. Gorf returning as potato salad. The Wayside series was one of my favorite series as a kid, and when I first saw this show I remembered I really tried to like it, I used to record each episode and was eager see what they came up with. But you're right, it was absolutely mediocre, and beyond that, it left such a little impression on me I actually can't remember most of the episodes, even though I've seen almost all of them. The books are memorable, but the show is not, and honestly that is sad. I think of the biggest disappointments was the episode that dealt with Ms. Zarves and the 19th floor, because in the books Allison went to a strange other world in one of the most memorable chapters of the series. In the episode it's shown as a boarded up vent, and literally was a small part of the episode. That kind of rushing over details is just really frustrating. On the bright side, if I were to trust anyone to remake the series, it'd be you.

I think what made the Wayside cartoon a failure for me is that it doesn't capture the kids very well... not just that they have almost completely different personalities, but... well, in the books, the kids were plausible as little kids. Even if what happened around them was totally bizarre, it was still plausible because they still talked, acted and overall felt like genuine children. The kids of the cartoon... do not look, act or feel like real children. This is a common problem for cartoon kids, of course, as not all writers are as good as Louis Sachar when it comes to writing kid characters -- but here it's especially blatant. The students look, act and feel more like teenagers, or at least caricatures of teenagers... except for Myron, who looks, feels, and acts more like a caricature of an unusually stupid adult man. (Really, giving him that haircut was not a good idea... it makes him look like he's suffering from premature baldness.)

I remember loving Wayside because I was 9 when it came out, so I was the perfect demographic. I also related to Todd because I’ve been the new kid in a unique class that looped. What I find interesting about Wayside is it was one of the few times when a western animated cartoon was about a weird school and the adventures the characters had within it. With shows were the protagonist is a child like Loud House, Ed Edd man Eddy, Codename: Kids Next Door, and Fillmore the kids and their friends are the unique feature rather than the school. What made Harry Potter so well believed by kids is it took a boring concept like going to school and studying, and made it a place you’d want to go to. Usually only anime makes shows about weird schools like Soul Eater, Food Wars, and My Hero Academia. So it was interesting to see a western cartoon about a weird school. However, like most anime about new kids going to school like Rosario Vampire, Todd is a very bland protagonist mostly because he’s a passive protagonist rather than an active one. Most of the show is him reacting to the weirdness rather than causing it. The only thing separating him from other useless male protagonists is the fact that his hair is orange rather than brown. Also I feel like it would’ve made more sense for Myron and Principle Kidswatter to be father and son. They’re both fat, black, have pink hair, are selfish, and are unaware of their own stupidity. Plus Myron’s egotism and power tripping would’ve made more sense because then he could be like, “My dad’s the principle! So if you don’t do as I say I’ll get you suspended.” They changed so much about the show it wouldn’t have been too much of a stretch. As an adaptation, I completely understand your gripes with this show considering you grew up with the books. My favorite book growing up was Junie B. Jones. If someone turned that book into a tv show and ruined all the characters, I’d be pissed too.

As a fellow fan of the books (my first experience was a teacher reading a few chapters a day back in elementary school), I do agree with the video. Especially as I'm not so sure that Wayside School is even as remembered as something like Spider-Man, Garfield or TMNT. As such doing an adaptation for money in my opinion doesn't make sense. You either do it because you're a fan who wants to give it additional life or you don't do it at all. Plus, like the Super Mario Bros movie (which arguably has guilty pleasure appeal), if not for the name being used it would likely fade into obscurity.

Don't forget, when you are making a kids show, you are NOT making it for the kids. You are making it for the parents to approve to their kids. Just like when we create songs for commercials, we aren't making it for the products, we are making it for the teenage girls. Sadly, as a person who's job is to advertise for the entertainment industry, creating stock characters and scenarios is the best choice. Why try to create something unique or fantastical when you can create something that will work for a short lived show that will piss off no one? The Way Side TV show was never intended to go past 50 episodes, even if it exploded with popularity. It was DESIGNED to make some money, keep your employees working and move to the next project that was in the planning phase. When you make a risky project, you are risking your job. No one likes to mail their resume everywhere before your family is on food stamps. You can ONLY take risks when you can afford them.

From what I understand, the reason Canada makes a lot of crap cartoons because they have a rule that a certain percentage of all media must be Canadian in origin, probably to keep its entertainment and culture from being enveloped entirely by American movies and shows. The effect of which is a bunch of people get a little money to make a show quick and cheap so they can say that yes, at least X% of their stuff is in fact Canadian.

JoJo only avoided filler because the manga came out in the 80s and the anime in the 2010s. and Season Zero...they took a minor character, made her a main character, and made her annoying as fuck.
