I have an idea for a story I would like to suggest that you could possibly somehow miraculously execute well as the story could be about a dumbass dad and a nagging mom as your main character’s with the dumbass dad being a stupid dog and the nagging mom being a snooty cat and a butt monkey who first met each other when they were in high school with the mom as child constantly picking on, bullying, and harassing the dad when he two was also a child and has been doing all that because she like likes him and at some point overtime they would eventually fall in love with each other and get married and as the years go by they are now currently going through a disfunctional marriage with the mom living a miserable life of torture and hell while the dad just sleeps on the couch watching sports, action movies and manly things on tv and at some point for reasons I don’t know the husband and wife would switch bodies as the two would then have to live each others lives while learning about how gender role stereotypical each of their lives are. This is a rant: I how adults don't take cartoons seriously, so they just say "hey if cartoons are just stupid things for kids to watch we'll make a bunch of adult cartoons that are stupid things for adults to watch," without looking into the depth and complexities that some kids shows have. I know not all adult cartoons are bad, but I just wish that there would be more serious cartoons for an older demographic that aren't just comedy/drama. I find that there is more complexity in a show like steven universe than a lot of adult cartoons. (I am aware there are exceptions) I just wish that there would be more cartoons with a similar style to SU, Adventure Time, Gravity Falls, Ok KO, etc. Their aren't too many quality kids cartoons to begin with, and if they were for an older audience I feel like there could be even more masterpieces that are looked at through the ages.

there is one cliché I particulary LOATHE on every single appearance, be it a good or bad movie, I just can't stand the "Liar review", which the Nostalgia Critic mentioned as something he hates too. We've seen it a lot, such as Sing, Chicken Run and Bug's life. That cliché when the protagonist spends most part of the movie sustaining a lie to achieve a goal, and the whole schtick is busted, and then we have to spend those long minutes having the hero moping, ostracized, everybody mad at him just for the plot to move without needing it. Perhaps the ONLY movie it never bothered me with it was Mulan, because this cliché was necessary for the plot and character development and actualy affected the finale in a very important way.

With Disney's old movies, they had style. That art style is one reason why the movies are loved. The Lion King style is still the most famous way to draw lions. That is why Disney was so unique. Each movie had it's own art style that fit the setting. The live action remakes remove any original style the originals had. Why the hell would I want to watch a live action Lion King with realistic lions when I can just watch the original with it's unique style that helped lighten the movie, since it is an interpretation of a relatively dark Shakespearean play.

Live action movies can have interesting, distinctive visual styles too, if their directors actually give a flying fuck. Most (if not all) adult cartoons try too hard to be ..adult. They always have unnecessary violence, swearing, sexual references etc. usually because anything animated is correlated more with children. Wan Shi Tong: You think you're the first person to believe their war was justified?! Countless others before you have come here, seeking weapons, weaknesses or battle strategies! Aang: We had no choice! Please, we're just desperate to protect the people we love! Wan Shi Tong: And now I'm going to protect what I love. (Wan Shi Tong spreads his wings; the library starts to shake and flood with sand) Wan Shi Tong: I'm taking my knowledge back! No one will ever abuse it again! I can agree with this, to an extent. I can get behind "adult humor" to a degree, but it's when the humor claims to be adult and instead just runs on juvenile and gross-out gags that it becomes very bothersome to me. There's also the ongoing issue of adult cartoons lacking any real ongoing story to engage the viewers; I feel like one of the only Western shows to really even try lately is Bojack Horseman. It feels like a lot of these adult cartoons have a free pass to ignore the story writing process entirely just because they've instead written 5 million toilet, sex, and shock jokes that appeal to grown men and women with the minds of children. It's very frustrating to me.

Tbh, it's not so much that Rocko himself or the show is "edgy" and more that it portrays adult life in a brutally honest manner, presenting it in a decidedly unglamorous and unglorified light. I'll tell you why rap themes don't work most of the times, it's because it doesn't fit the aesthetic of the show. It's just for a marketing gimmick or to seem "hip with the kids". But great shows like Samurai Champloo and The Boondocks have amazing openings, because hip hop is the aesthetic of those shows. Those two shows are filled with hip hop culture. So therefore it doesn't feel forced and out of context. Also the lyrics to those two shows I mentioned are deep and tell a story about the show you're about to watch. Hell, The Boondocks opening was literally inspired by Samurai Champloo. You can't say Danny Phantom was the only one that worked, and not even explain why....Danny Phantom's theme is fire, don't get me wrong, but I'm surprised that's the only one you like.

Oliver Hayhoe I’m cringing at the fact that he said that Steven Spielberg directed Back to the Future. But it doesn’t surprise me the least bit. Nobody ever gives Robert Zemeckis ANY credit. Despite the fact that he’s made a LOT of fantastic films and has influenced Hollywood over and over again, nobody ever recognizes his name. It’s like what Sean Myster said, when people see movies with Steven Spielberg’s name on it, they automatically assume he directed the film, regardless of if he actually directed it or not. And as much as I love Steven Spielberg, that shit fucking pisses me off to no end. ESPECIALLY when this happens to movies that Robert Zemeckis directed. Nobody EVER gives Robert Zemeckis credit. Even Michael Bay, one of the biggest douchebags AND one of the worst directors in Hollywood HISTORY, gets more credit than freaking Robert Zemeckis. I’m dead serious. I once made a poll on a Teenager Community on Google Plus on who people think is better, Robert Zemeckis or Michael Bay. And Michael Bay got WAY more votes in a landslide. The fact that people will recognize Michael Bay’s name considering that most of Michael Bay’s films that he either directed and/or produced has made loads of money despite being literally the same exact bullcrap while people have no clue who Robert Zemeckis is considering that his last 2 Films he directed have bombed in the box office despite that he actually put effort into the films disgusts me to hell and back. Cliches are based on archetypes. Cliches are not bad. Many good movies and shiws are based on usual archetypes we all have in our mind and that help us to feel related to characters and situations. The difference between good and bad movies are not that the good ones lack of cliches, but that the good ones know how to use them properly. It's like to put salt to food. I feel Big Mouth is intentionally made unattractive due to its subject. It's a cartoon about kids going through puberty and discovering their sexuality, and if they were made too attractive, the accusations of it being child pornography would double. The unattractiveness of the show helps in not attracting kids, and helps de-sexualize the subjects they're discussing.
@TheHadMatters5 жыл бұрын
I'd have the same issue with that as I have with any criticism of sexuality being displayed anywhere. I am pretty sure normalisation is the only way to truly effect progress in abolishing neediness, stereotypes and selfish expectations. It's not pornography if all it does is acknowledge that children have sexual desires. Showing that, *and* showing that not all desires have to be acted upon, many actions have undesirable long-term consequences, and that adults have no right to take advantage of those circumstances and their power positions is much more impactful at shaping people's ethics than denying those circumstances (even if you do include the second half - because then it just becomes top-down sermons no one relates to themselves). Obviously I only mean "showing that" in the truthful dosis that makes sense. There is no need to cram these things in anywhere - they don't usually make for great plot anyways. But you don't need to create unrealistic abstracted versions of your story to avoid it being porn. If you worry that your story is porn, and you want to tell a real story, just tell a different story.
@nine3005 жыл бұрын
That didn't occur to me (I've never heard of this show), but also I can see how it might reinforce a feeling of awkwardness and discomfort with your appearance which seems to be more intense for kids in that age range. Hayley had to suffer through it as well on American Dad. When I saw her being handcuffed by her father in the first episode, I decided 'Fuck this shit!!' and changed the channel. -_- I still don't watch it (or any of Seth's nonsense) these days but I was lucky enough, one night, to switch to an action sequence where Hayley was beating up her father. Needless to say, it put a satisfied smile on my face...until the ending of the episode made me change the channel again in disgust. 9_9 I see nothing but animated humdrum in Seth's future.

I’m just generally so sick and tired of Disney remaking all of their animated movies. I’m extremely angry and upset that my favorite film of all time is getting a totally unnecessary live-action remake. The original Lion King is a timeless, animated, masterpiece and one of the greatest films of all time. Everything in the 1994 film was perfect as it could be and it still continues to be loved to this day by fans and other people out there. There are no humans in this movie, so it’s not even going to be live-action, but rather photorealism CGI??? It absolutely disgusts me knowing that in about 2 years, whenever I talk about my favorite film, I’m gonna have to refer to it not only by its title, but by either saying “The 1994 one” or “the animated film.” 😡 I don’t support Disney doing all of these live-action remakes of their classic animated films and I don’t want to give money to this. To me, it feels like the remakes have become the new “direct to video sequels” trend Disney’s doing. 😒

Some of the live actions movies have been fine/competent, but I have not seen one that offered me anything that the original film did not. The closest I've seen to a LA adaptation of a Disney film that recaptures the spirit and charm is the Aladdin Broadway show, and that's because the changes they made in service to the format also worked with the vault material they adapted, and they let characters like Aladdin, the Genie, Jafar (though it helps that he was the same actor as the original film), the Sultan, etc. take liberties with the characters to feel natural rather than force a change onto the story or stringently adhere to the existing version.

I know how you feel man, it allmost feels like disney is ashamed of it's 2D animated past and I really don't get why. As a lover of animation I can say, these are timeless classics that also became these classics thanx to their wonderfull oustanding animation. Even in disneys not so good movies, the animation is still freakin amazing, so I really don't get why disney wants to deny what made them so great to begin with. Whoever came up with this live action remake this is certainly on my "people I need to punch" list.
@Lauren_2107 жыл бұрын
papershadow69 I actually have seen The Lion King on broadway for my 15th birthday over 6 years ago and it was spectacular. Really, a lot of the Disney broadway shows are the “live action” versions of the movies lol. In addition, I also saw the original movie in the theaters in 2011 and I had to take that two week opportunity because I didn’t get to see it back then since I wasn’t born until 1996. That experience was also great seeing it with so many people and I was silently mouthing the iconic lines and songs since I’ve memorized the first (and second film) by heart. I do hope to see Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast on Broadway someday.

Honestly, it wouldn’t bother me if it had been the movies were ones that weren’t initially popular. For example, a live action version of Disney’s Atlantis or Treasure Planet. The concept itself isn’t bad, it’s just that it’s kinda unnecessary for the ones that are already well known and popular.

I feel like Disney's best potential for good-quality remakes would be, ironically, some of their "flops". More accurately, movies like "The Black Cauldron" or "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" which I feel would've done better without Disney's "it has to be for children" mindset, and c ould clearly do better nowadays. Even if it had to be pg-13, it could still do so much more (or at least attempt more) than when BC had to "play it safe" in many respects.

Isn't the plot about how these two Spix Macaws(one of whom is apparently a socialized bird that cannot fly) are thought to be the last of their kind(the species is extinct in the wild) and are escaping poachers and are expected to bang and somehow repopulate the entire species out in the wild while there's literally only two of them..? I mean, you are as far as you know the last of your entire race and at risk of dying the way everyone else in your species has, why would you take any time for a dance party? Especially considering one cannot fly and thus cannot survive in the wild let alone be picked as a mate by a wild bird, considering...just like "we're the only ones of our species left, we're all constantly threatened by the reality that we could get kidnapped by humans and either smuggled or killed and you can't fly, let's boogie". I mean yes, in reality the circumstances are much better...there were more than 150 of the birds when they got counted 2 years ago and they'll be reintroduced in 2021, but considering the characters think they're the last two Spix, it seems odd.

I think the lack of quality adult animation is more due to South Park- people of course want to follow the leader, but they seem to willfully ignore the fact that South Park gets away with frankly horrific things BECAUSE of the crappy art style. South Park never would have survived as a live action show, and even if it had Family Guy-level animation I'd wager they'd be under far more scrutiny than they are. I hate the fact that of all the disney movies i would want to see on live action PURELY FOR AESTHETIC PURPOSES, only one has gotten made, that being The Jungle Book. The little mermaid in live action would probably look pretty cool during the underwater shots, and Hunchback of Notre Dame would look spectacular with the high views and fire. Actually, Anime has suffered from some over used clichés too. - Male protagonist is ALWAYS a wimpy, weak loser who can never stand up for himself. And either becomes stronger by the END of the series or never at all. - Female love interest is ALWAYS short-tempered, violent and never stops yelling. And ONLY changes her ways near the END of the series instead of going through character development. And sometimes, she quickly goes back to her old violent ways. - Male protagonist is ALWAYS getting abused and beaten up by females, even for things that aren't his fault or for no reason at all, and it's ALWAYS gets played for comedy. Much more common in harem animes. - Male has a crush on a nicer, kinder, sweet female, but soon falls for the violent, abusive female and marries her instead of the nicer female.

Fortuantely I didn't watch romance ones (except the ones aimed at girls, which doesn't have that), so it wasn't terrible, but that schtick was all the rage back in the day, with the harems being the worse offenders of all. Although, with the couple of expections, anime tend to have a juvenile humor, even the ones aimed at older people, so is not surprising witnessing dumb innuendos, sex jokes or cheap slapstick against a fodder (may be a male or a female or a pet). That's one of the reasons why I don't see them at all, despite being open to a valid show.

Unfortunately, the reason adult animation is always comedic is due to so many people believing that that's *all* it can be. As Roger Ebert put it - "Every time an animated film is successful, you have to read all over again about how animation isn't 'just for children' but 'for the whole family,' and 'even for adults going on their own.' I just want to point out that movies which are based around a large cliche, aren't always bad. the bad part is when they do that and don't do something else that's way different. Zootopia, for example, is based around "You can do anything" and is a world of animals. the biggest cliche in the universe. Even with this, it's still a good movie because takes those cliches to level, and put a new spin on everything else. like how it points out: yeah, you can do anything, but it's not going to be easy, you'll have to work really hard, and things will go wrong, and not everything is going to work out perfectly, but you can work through it get past it. it also has a commentary on racism, which you may think is good or bad, but you have to agree that it does it pretty well, and points out many non child appropriate problems in a PG way. Sorry for such a long comment and if you read all the way through it please criticize my short essay, to help me do better next time. Also thanks for reading it

I'm a story driven person. I like watching things for the plot and character development, not to see the same shit and the same jokes in every episode, so I heavily agree with #8. That's honestly why I watch more anime than American cartoons (but a looooot of recent cartoons here are more story driven and I love that.) Now I can give you a list of tired anime cliches, the biggest ones being in romance/slice of life type shows.
@ItsOver90000007 жыл бұрын
Also I gotta comment on the "Danny Phantom is the only cartoon to do a good rap opening" because that's just a lie. A cartoon like The Boondocks wouldn't work with any other type of genre BUT rap/hip-hop. And just because it's not making new episodes doesn't mean that the animation still wasn't great for its time. I honestly forgot that show came out over 10 years ago. It doesn't feel that long. Plus that's one example that wasn't just a straight comedy.
@thenew45597 жыл бұрын
I agree, although anime as a whole has its own problems. I don’t know what you are referring to though when you say recent western animation is becoming more story based, I can’t think of any story based American shows. To me they only seem to be getting much worse, much less story based and more episodic, with a few outliers such as the samurai jack reboot, rick and Morty, etc.
@jackgarcia59267 жыл бұрын
While Anime has far more variety in terms of genre, each genre is plagued by the exact same tropes and cliches, to the point that all animes pertinent to a certain genre feel like Carbon copies of each other, it is absolutely awful. There are exceptions of course, but they are just that, exceptions and the anime market is over saturated, no one enjoys digging trough garbage in order to find a gem. While Western animation has far less variety in terms of Genre's, they are no where near as formulaic as most anime. Sturgeon's law is present on both, however...

Have you ever seen The Plague Dogs? I highly recommend it, I think it avoids every animation cliche in your list. It has the same creators of the Watership Down animated movie, and the heavily dark and depressing tone is probably why it's so obscure today, as it certainly shouldn't have been advertised as kid-friendly. But trust me, it all builds up to the ending, which is one of my all time favorites, it's a beautiful work of art and has made me and my friends cry like babies when I showed it to them. I'm not telling you how to critique anything, but I would be surprised if you didn't label it as an "Admirable Animation" someday.

Even the worst cliches can be done well. Except love triangles, those are always bad.
@markcobuzzi8267 жыл бұрын
The only cartoon (which comes to my mind at the moment) that actually pulled off a good love triangle story, in my opinion, was Disney's adaptation of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame." The story is catalyzed by four men who become infatuated with the same girl (in the Disney film, it is three, since Phoebus and Pierre Gringoire are made into one composite character). The reason why I think that "love square" (or "love pentagon" in the book's case) works is because it actually serves an important purpose for the story's themes. Besides religion, prejudice, societal corruption, etc. other major themes are unrequited infatuations and how destructive it is to have warped notions of sexuality/romantic love. The story uses those relationships that Esmeralda has with the various men as an opportunity to deeply explore into elements like lust, jealousy, the Madonna/Whore complex, expressions of self-giving love through platonic vs. sexual relationships, friendship, misogyny, celibacy, the effects of embracing Puritanical mindsets or shallow debauchery devoid of love/respect/commitment, and how relationships are most healthy when both people see each other simply as human beings, without one demonizing/deifying/objectifying the other.

To say that all adult cartoons are comedy is like saying all children's cartoons are comedy, and both are false. Just because a show uses humor doesn't make it a comedy. Hell, look at Romeo and Juliet, one of the most famous Tragedies. The character Mercutio is possibly one of the funniest characters Shakespear ever wrote. He even gets a joke in his last words to the effect of "'tis but a flesh wound." Shakespeare, making Monty Python references before it was cool. I would classify shows like Bojack Horseman, "F" is for Family, and Rick and Morty as tragedies, with one hit after the next whittling the main cast away. That's part of why I find them unwatchable. In old school prose, comedy is everything that isn't inherently depressing. Adventure Time, Regular Show, Fairly Odd Parents, and to a point Teen Titans (classic) are all comedies, though Teen Titans does have quite a bit more character development. And I think that's what you mean when you say all adult cartoons are comedies. Most have very little in character development. Archer never really progresses past being a man child with mommy issues and being a surprisingly amazing spy. Every single one of Seth McFarlane's main characters is always an obnoxious, out of touch father of three and never changes. Even Rick and Morty, the "smartest" show on TV, invlolves no development, at least not on Rick's part. He just goes on being the same idiotic, selfish asshole with nothing learned from his adventures except maybe how to be more of a selfish asshole. The only time he ever progresses as a human being is to further his own selfish goals (ie. Pickle Rick). So if there's a trope endemic to adult animation, its a lack of meaniningful character development. And its why so many adults, especially younger adults, tend to cling to shows like Teen Titans (classic), Adventure Time, Gravity Falls, Samurai Jack, Avatar the Last Airbender, and the like. They have character development that, even if you can't personally relate to, you can understand. They're good stories. The steak and potatoes of entertainment where Family Guy is the deep fried Twinkies coated in Pixie Stix and cocaine.
@isaacschmitt48035 жыл бұрын
Oop! One more exception to the rule of pointless adult animation: Venture Brothers. Character progression, cheeky references, rewatchable, and in the more recent seasons, actually decent animation.
@baconbasket62475 жыл бұрын
You're way off base when you say Rick and Morty had no character development. It's not that Rick didn't develop, it's that his growth wasn't obvious. That's who Rick is: He doesn't want you to know that he changed. He doesn't want people to know his true emotion or what he really feels about his family. Putting Rick to the side, literally every other main character changed almost entirely, especially Morty. He started off as this 14 year old, awkward, passive shy boy until Season 3 where he stood up to the President. Beth even changed completely, seeing how she not only dropped her abandonment baggage, but even stood up for Jerry, which would have been the total opposite in the beginning. The list goes on, but that show glorified character growth and change.

You know the worst animated cliches I hate the most? The Liar Revealed, The Bullies, Useless Adults, and All the Other Reindeer. The Liar Revealed - Basically, the hero or villain made a huge lie about themselves and when they got exposed, instead of asking questions why they lie, they're immediately thrown under the bus and abandoned by everyone they care about or kicked out from their homes and treated them like dirt. This doesn't make the story in any shows work as this cliche stops the story to make the liar suffer because "lying will ruin your life". We know that, but can you NOT have other characters be out of character and ostracized the liars in questioned? The Bullies - Whether a jock, cheerleader, teacher, or even a nerd, this cliche was always used to give the audience a reason to feel bad for the main character who has to put up with these people everyday. I get it, bullying is also the worst thing to happen to people, but many cartoons lately made the bullies one-dimensional, since not all of them has character other than making their victims suffer because they can. Useless Adults - When a person seeks help from an authority and receives it, they know they can trust that adult whenever they have problems. But today's shows always have adults completely incompetent on their jobs or worst accused the victims of the situations of them causing trouble without getting the both sides of the story.That implies to the audience, especially the kids, to not ask help from authorities and take matters into their own hands, making things worst. All the Other Reindeer - Having the main character being disrespected and abused on a daily basis because of their past or because of their family's past doesn't work well with me. Because everyone acts like the MC is a disgusting criminal even though he done nothing bad or even met other people. Or because the MC is too different from others, so that MC is a freak of nature. It's pretty much saying that being different is a sin and it's your fault you're not normal to other people...
@Lauren_2107 жыл бұрын

I think all adult animation being comedy-based goes back to your explanation of why there's so few linear story cartoons in western media, because a lot of the genres that would work would require or semi-require a linear story like Avatar where you have to watch the episodes in order. It's a lot more difficult to really write cartoons and stories for most genres where you can start wherever you want and jump between any episodes in any order you want. There are exceptions of course, for one, an adult mystery/detective show wouldn't need a linear plotline and thus could be episodic, in fact because of the freedoms of animation, an animated adult cartoon based around detectives solving paranormal events or murders or whatever could work very well and likely would catch on if done the right way, because there's no shortage of detective and murder mystery live action / real action shows on TV today, there's even an entire channel dedicated to murder-mystery shows aimed at adults (ID Investigation).
