Hey Cellspex Loved your worst to best list for 2011. For 2012 do you think you could watch and talk about Tinkerbell: Secret of the Wings AKA The best Tinkerbell movie. I loved the animation, score, and has some charming moments with the characters. I’m a little surprised you’ve never talked about them once. Because I found them perfect examples of guilty pleasures. So could include secret of the wings in your next list please. P.S. Phineas and Ferb: Across the second Dimension movie came out in 2011. If you’ve watched it where would you have ranked it. For me I would rank it in 2nd place above Kung fu panda 2 but below Arthur Christmas.

In my mind Rango did die, but not in a physical sense. When Rango crossed the road and met the man, the "actor" inside of him was what died after realizing the role he now serves as the sheriff of the town.
@thirdcoinedge
@thirdcoinedge 25 күн бұрын
It's also fitting that the Spirit of the West is essentially just...Clint Eastwood. Not the Man With No Name, but the actor himself, acting as a mirror for Rango as someone whose identity has largely formed around his place within the genre of the Western that Rango has grown uncertain of committing to, providing the advice of confidence he needs to accept his necessary function within the narrative in a nice metatextual aspect to the film. "No man can walk out on his own story."

Exactly! That scene alone shows how Rango not only respects the western genre, but evolves it today using previous medias and interpretations to build setups and twists in its story. @@thirdcoinedge

Rango is by far one of the most underrated masterpieces I have ever seen. Its visual style is ahead of its time, the script is gritty and mature but never forgets its heart and emotional depth, and Rango is a wonderful protagonist with an amazing arc. I initially didn’t like the movie as a kid cause I didn’t get it but as an adult, I appreciate its ambition and story so much more.

Another element of the original Hoodwinked that makes it more charming was that it was independently made and that the animation was made to work within the limitations in sort of a Rakin Bass way. The only real thing that was added once they got a larger distributor was most of the celebrities and a few edits since the film was basically done at that point. The sequel had the Weinstein Company exert more control, rewrote it from top to bottom, hired a director who didn’t even see the first movie, and even the original creators and Patrick Warburton were disappointed at the results which says a lot especially since Patrick was involved with the first when it was being independently made.

Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd Dimension also came out this year! And I noticed a funny coincidence! If I had a nickel for all the times Disney Channel made an original movie based on an original series released in 2011, I’d have three nickels! Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened thrice! This movie, The Suite Life Movie and Good Luck Charlie, It’s Christmas! And they haven’t had an original movie based on a original series until this year with Big City Greens The Movie: Spacecation. I made a playlist of reviews for each of those 2011 movie in case you’re curious.

Me and my family went to go see Rio when it came out, and when we were going home there was a giant plume of smoke off in the distance, and a lot of helicopters over head. Turns out a massive man made fire broke out where I lived (this was in Texas during one of the dryest parts of the year), and it ended up destroying most homes and ended up killing a lot of people. There’s still a giant empty space that used to be where homes were. Rio saved me a traumatizing and potentially life threatening situation, my home ended up relatively fine thankfully but we still lived incredibly close to the fire. So uh…thanks Rio!

One more...just one more ranking...and then we have all the years... Also, as someone whose dad watched The Amazing Race back in the day, using the theme song for Cars 2 was a great choice. And as for some of the films on here, I feel that Kung Fu Panda 2's opening narration added a level of dramatic irony in that we know exactly what happened with Shen, but Po doesn't even know who the guy is, making their confrontation in the throne room much more compelling as we understand exactly why Shen is so amused at the situation, while leaving us eager for Po to eventually learn what the peacock did to him, as he starts to realize at the end of the scene. Furthermore, the flashback intro doesn't show the specifics of Shen's involvement in regards to Po, leaving the space open for the climactic revelation in the ruins of his old village at he comes to terms with his past and his mother's sacrifice. Unlike Tangled, the story isn't hinged on a big twist of revelation that could've worked without the opening narration - the intro leaves enough gaps for the movie to naturally fill in later, encouraging the audience to stay to see the full picture as it's revealed. I wouldn't even say it's a Chosen One story, really, because the stakes are more personal that the traditional "fated to save the world" trapping of that plot, primarily revolving around the dynamic between Po & Shen. Ultimately, I'd say the film is probably better than the first one, which, while great in its unique premise and surprising thoughtfulness & artistry compared to what came before (thank god they decided to just do a straight wuxia film rather than a parody), I feel was kind of divided in that Po's story feels less interesting than the conflict between Shifu & Tai Lung, the fight between them probably being the peak of the film with how grounded it feels, only for it to become more comedic once Po returns, making it feel like a bit of an abrupt tonal intrusion. The climax of the second film is definitely my favorite, particularly in how the technique of the cannonball redirection was set up & paid off during the final standoff (THE YIN-YANG! THE YIN-YANG SYMBOL!), compared to the first where Po defeating Tai Lung just didn't have that same impact as Shifu's fight beforehand (tl;dr the sequel has the best "skadoosh" moment). Furthermore, I appreciate that Rango is probably the best film Gore Verbinski ever made, and I'm sad to see that he hasn't done anything more in the medium of animation; even Guillermo del Toro said after making Pinocchio that he plans to fully transition over to animation one day. Also, I find that the success of the movie lies in how it interacts with genre. At first, the movie starts out like a Blazing Saddles comedy Western, poking fun at the self-serious nature of Westerns with the introduction of a witty comedic character who comes to learn and manipulate the customs of the genre for his own personal success as sheriff. However, the film gradually unveils more and more of a surprising dramatic sincerity to its story that keeps it rather compelling, mostly surrounding the main character's place as a transitory being using the trappings of the genre as a mask rather than fully accepting his place within it, which was used in Blazing Saddles as an instrument to derive comedy from and criticize the prevalent unspoken attitudes of racism within the genre, while in Rango it's a character flaw that title character has to overcome and prove himself as an individual with a place in the world. Ultimately, Rango rejects his previously malleable state of being, acquiring a clear knowledge of his identity within the genre he has become involved with, and the film finishes its evolution to becoming quite a nice tribute to old spaghetti westerns of the 60s.

Yeah sure I'll throw my hat in, because for me Tintin would have ranked a bit higher, but that's entirely because those comics got me through a LOT of bullying when I read them in the library in elementary school. Didn't even care that it was a blend of two of the comics, the characters were pitch perfect and it hit all the right notes throughout. That said, I understand why it wasn't a bigger hit, as Tintin IS a very OLD property.

Quick thoughts about some of the movies I saw in the opening lol I recently watched Kung Fu Panda 2 in the lead up to 4 for the first time in about a decade, and omg the scene of Po rediscovering his past and reaching inner peace is hands down one of my favorite scene in DreamWorks history. It's absolutely incredible. Winnie the Pooh is crazy underrated and it hurts. I'm biased cause I'm a huge fan of the characters, but it's funny and heartwarming and the epitome of a "feel-good movie". The knot scene is * chef's kiss *. It's really a shame the film released the weekend it did cause whether intentional or not it was set up to fail 😅. Also Rio slaps, idc what anyone says. Is that nostalgia talking from seeing it sooooo many times as a kid, maybe, but I rewatched that recently as well and I still think it's great. Also an instance of celebrity casting that works really well imo, everyone fits their roles perfectly

I can and will talk about A Monster In Paris for a g e s. The best version IMO is the original french version. Nothing to knock Sean Lennon's singing, but Matthew Chedid (as -M- ) not only wrote the original music in french, but absolutely rules during it. It's honestly beautiful in the french version. Also, the not-so-small references to both The Phantom of The Opera, and -M- himself, make it genuinely super fun if you like the novelty of either element.

Well the fun thing about a list of older movies is that i actually watched a good number of these! Even have some really specific memories of some, like watching Gnomio and Juliet on the school bus one time and watching Puss in Boots on a slumber party. Now for movies i have something to comment on: The Tintin movie is one of my favorite movies of all time as a big Tintin fan (it's kinda funny that you mentioned the family lineage thing since in the comics that guy that is the descendent of the *evil* pirate is... actually a normal guy, and there were other villains); As a Brazilian i have seen Rio a good number of times and like it well enough, though i only ever watched it dubbed in portuguese, so maybe it is funnier in the dub; And i have watched Arthur christmas on christmas a couple times, and while i don't think i love it as much as you, it's still a great movie

With "Children Who Case Lost Voices From Deep Below", I find intrigue not only in it's general subversion to conventions like the modern army coming in to try and attack/steal, which has already happened before in that place, but also how it's a solid film about how loss can be both a blessing and a curse. It's a real strong conclusion that never fails to neglect the emotional core of what the film is trying to say. Also, solid soundtrack. It still is, surprisingly, one of my favorites of Shinkai in spite of it not getting the strongest reception by comparison.

I also love the liar revel in rango, while other liar reveals follow the setup from lying to other characters to the characters finding out said lie, rango ( while still following the basic liar reveal setup) manage to also make it a basic characters setup as the main character had no identity until the end, yes it still has the usual setup and it can be predictable, but like I said before, it is the best liar reveal story to me.

Nice to see you include some Korean films in there. Leafie really impressed me when I watched it about a year ago. I'll also definitely need to check out Le Tableau as I actually hadn't heard of it before. For 2012 I'd highly recommend checking out Moon Man and Padak. They're not my favorite of the year, but pretty solid films that may not already be on your list as they are slightly more obscure, but definitely worth checking out.

11:30 Believe or not. Someone used that death scene as the part of a Kinktober prompt. And then used my fic the very next chapter. And the Cars discord server is so much fun and made my fic/idea even more disturbing than just turning Axlerod into Frollo/Valentino. I was just writing him in the way of him having an Incel mentality of “owning” an attractive woman that belonged to a Racecar because he knew everyone was going to die in the pits. “Saving” her from being blown up in the pits with the rest of the Radiator Springs crew. That threatening the lives of the three remaining cars from Radiators Springs (Sheriff, Sarge, and Lizzie) would lead her to be more agreeable and less combative to his wants. The discord server turned Axlerod being a eugenist/fascinated (other f word) for Porsches, a broomer (the internet’s favorite word to accuse LGBT+ people), unaliving oneself, and Flowers in the Attic-ing (if you know what that is you know). Granted, it’s all meant to be f-ed up but still… I don’t touch that stuff. I’m using a lot of coded words because I feel like KZbin will delete the comment.

Has Leafie ever been released on Blu Ray or DVD in America with the uncut ending? If so, how would one be able to tell it from a censored version, does the boxart, or any of the logos look different on the case?

One nitpick about Arthur Christmas, if being Santa is a family business, how does Arthur find a wife and continue the line if they live in the North Pole where they are the only humans? Is it like Santa clause 2 where he goes to a regular town in England to find a wife? Where did grandsanta and broadbent and Staunton come from?

The intro earned you a like full-stop! Very good list as well (but don't do Cinderella 3 like that, it was actually quite good considering what 2 gave us. Honestly, the movement between 1 and 3 is rather smooth).

Tintin was actually rated PG and not PG-13, although I understand the confusion considering the bit where a man is shot and uses HIS OWN BLOOD to write a secret message before he dies.

Cell, my favorite of your Worst to Best Every Animated Films is 2012. I hope that Wreck-It Ralph is still the best despite the thing that we do not speak about (if you don't know, go watch Cell's worst to best for year 2018) existing. I also hope that you are able to upload 2012's list. Also, do you think Illumination will ever learn to get actual voice actors rather than star power? What are your thoughts on The Wild Robot?

Hey Cellspex Loved your worst to best list for 2011. For 2012 do you think you could talk about Tinkerbell secret of the wings AKA the best one. I’m a little surprised you didn’t talk about them once because I found them perfect examples of guilty pleasures. P.S. Have you seen Phineas and Ferb Across the 2nd Dimension? If so where would you have ranked it? I would make it my second favorite animated film of the year. Above Kung fu panda 2 and below Arthur Christmas.

Its films like "tatsumi" that make me yearn for something like that about American comic artists in particular Jack "the King" Kirby. I want a fil. about him that tries to emulate his style. Uses his krackle effects, bold colours hard shadows, big expressive gestures and collage techniques to create something truly unique and beautiful
