Tangled will always feel like one of Disney’s most well constructed movies to me. All the characters are great and have amazing chemistry, the plot feels very natural, the songs are amazing and it has one of the best Disney couples. The bedroom scene is probably the biggest nitpick of the movie, but it’s hard to deny that it’s much more satisfying for Rapunzel to piece everything together rather than it being told outright to her. Easily my pick for the best of 2010, but I can see the case being made for both Toy Story 3 and HTTYD as well

Romance in movies where the relationship is not the entire focus of the plot will _always_ feel rushed compared to series or romantic movies just because of time constraints.
@eaglefan25693 жыл бұрын
Exactly this. With how limited a movie's run is, anything that isn't a priority in its run is going to naturally feel rushed. Film makers have to pick and choose a focus to dedicate the film to so the overall story they want to tell is told, and anything not directly to that cause is likelier to be weaker. Not to say films can't do a good job with multiple facets during its limited run, just that it has less opportunity to do so than other mediums.

Something HTTYD has going for it (that a lot of people probably don’t realize) is it’s incredibly realistic portrayal of inventing and engineering in general. Hiccup starts building something and it doesn’t work the first time, so he continuously goes back and experiments with this design, making adjustments and improvements as time goes on. And it doesn’t stop when he gets it to work. He is constantly working on making Toothless’s tail, along with all his other gadgets, better. All his gear shown in later movies and the show has a practical purpose, from fireproof armor designed to look similar to a dragon to the pockets where he carries stuff like knives and his map. And the engineering uses actual physics! The stuff Hiccup makes is grounded in reality and not “oh this works because something something long technology words” that most movies do (it’s even more aggravating when they’re movies that pretend to care about that kind of stuff. Looking at you, BH6). Idk as a kid who loves engineering and knows stuff about aerodynamics I appreciate HTTYD for how it does all that stuff.

Hey, Cellspex, I can understand why you ranked Shrek Forever After so low; heck, even I didn't like it when I was younger. But I highly recommend watching Schafferillas Productions' video on why Shrek Forever After is an Underrated Gem. Love your videos, btw! Keep up the good work and I can't wait to hear your thoughts on future animated stories!

I remember when Alpha and Omega was being worked on by the studio I was working at in India. The terrible horrible era of my life. They hadn't paid anyone for 6 months. Not that the salary was anything. Most of the work was being done by interns working for the experience or a stipend of $3 a month. But hey, the animation is my passion and I should be happy for the opportunity. Hope all the American studios that outsource their work for cheap exploitable labor burn in hell. Sorry for the rant.

One thing that I think is worth mentioning about Arriety, that surprised my when I watched it, is how good an adaptation it is. It really nails the tone and the characters, from what I remember. I think the biggest change is they introduced Spiller who wasn't in the first book but the change works and I think it shows an understanding of the source material. The Boy (he isn't named in the book) is also a bit creepy in the book.

I never got a cheerleader vibe from Astrid. She's on the ball, serious and puts in the effort. Hiccup may be the dreamer who can find novel solutions, but Astrid is practical and efficient. Her problem is that she was working on the false pretense of what dragons were like because that was what was given to her by her family and fellows.
@steamboatwill3.3673 жыл бұрын
Couldn't she have been the protagonist instead?

I think CellSpex meaned this in the context of the trope. 'Oh, I am the cold badass girl everyone loves and I could have any boy I want, but one fly-scene with the nerdy outcast is enough to decide that he's the most desirable men of all time.' And yeah, with that I personally can't argue - Astrids personality could have been so much better if they let it develope slowly and not like a whiplash between arrogance, jealousy and suddenly love, especially in the first movie.
