I love how there are scenes where you can actually kinda see the depth, a cel is casting a bit of a shadow on the background, because there are evidently THAT many cels layered on top of each other and they were hitting the maximum. And then in some scenes like the IRS while Kent Brockman is interviewing the last-minute tax-filers, you can not only see that, but the point where the background characters become one big solid cel with no movement. and it's like, yeah, so much nostalgia for that era, but that's not a problem we have in the digital era.. you can easily run a quick simple movement loop in the background to keep the eye from noticing, but most of the time these days they don't, and even front and center characters are just standing still.. because even though animation is about .01 percent of the labor it used to be, it's somehow treated like it's 10 times as expensive to pull off at any level of quality.

What makes animation cels even cooler is the fact that a lot of companies threw them away after their initial use. Making a lot of cels from specific shows even rarer! It's cool owning a one of a kind piece of art from your favorite TV show that has it's own behind the scenes history to it.

@BonaparteBardithion
@BonaparteBardithion 3 жыл бұрын
@@howiegruwitz3173 Lack of storage space and reason to keep them. Home video didn't really take off until the 80s and DVD wasn't for another ten years, so it wasn't standard practice to keep the original for remastering. There's a lot of shows from the 60s that don't even have the masters of the final product anymore because they didn't expect to rebroadcast them. For the first season of Dr. Who, several episodes only exist as secondary recordings (via filming a TV). On a related note, all those film reels that are sent to theaters aren't preserved either. The other side of the cell is kinda like when you hide the outline layer in digital art

That's amazing. I love stuff like this. Especially something as iconic as the Simpsons from an episode that literally millions of people have seen. I myself have an animation cell from the Akira anime movie.

Taking about animation cells is still deconstructing the process of creating media so this video still feels like your usual M.O..

100% on board! I own two animation cells, one from Sailor Moon and the other from Tenchi Muyo and they are legitimately the best collectible of all time! I have them both framed and displayed with the episode that they are from. Also what you said about the emotional connection and the themes of the episode is 100% true

Heheh, now I wanna get an Initial D cell. That show broke me out of my "I don't care about cars" phase of life and made me open my eyes. there's a couple for $600, because its from the 90s, but I'm 100% adding this to at least my wishlist.

Thinking about how many traditional animation cels must currently be out there gives me an existential crisis. If ever animated character on an animation cel came to life, they could easily overthrow and annihilate the entire human race at least 3 times over

awesome video! half of why your channel is great is your passion, videos like this and the arcade cabinet ones are always welcome additions :) also we never turn down simpsons content here edit: loved your explanation of it and showing which scene each piece comes from. never knew that!

Oh dude, this made me decide to look up what animation cels I could find for one of my favorite shows as a kid. Some are expensive ($100+), but I found some cel sketches that are only $6??? And I... wound up buying one of the $6 ones. It's an adorable sketch of one of my favorite characters, and something that was part of something that was part of my childhood. Though it's an impossible situation, I think of how psyched kid!me would be if I could go back in time and say "hey, I have this!! this is part of the show!!" Thanks for this video--I don't think I would have looked this up otherwise.
