There are other scenes that are cannon which you could use as examples, but ik they wouldn't be as dramatic for the video so I cant blame ya, but I thought you did better research than this tbh. Also yea, if you read the wn unofficial translations, they are gonna be pretty bad. With Linia and Pursina, its also fucked up, but it shouldn't be too surprising as a turn of events given the situation and character, he is being enabled by his environment and his current mental state is not rational in that moment. This DOES NOT justify his actions, but the scene itself existing justified, since it shows how fragile Rudeus is, and how he is still capable of doing horrible things and feel justified if he doesn't check himself. 6:39 Your example is fine, but it also isn't all that different from many of the actions Rudeus takes, example, episode 8. Similar context, and if we bring in the cut parts from the LN, its even more clear. Rudeus has sexual trauma, he has been isolated from people for decades. So after a conversation with the girl's father, where the father tells him he'd leave his daughter in his room, he turns him down. Yet when he gets to his room, still drunk btw, he sees that girl sitting on his bed, (not against her will, but potentially coarsed by her mother), to Rudeus this is an opportunity to get something he thinks he has been desiring for 30 years, something deeply tied into his insecurities and trauma, but he tries to scare her off by saying he might try something. However, this girl, Eris, who he has become closer with over the past few years, says she is okay with a little bit of sexual activity, at this point, he losing control of his inhibitions (which are still very weak at this point), he has the brain chemicals of a horny adolescent too. He starts to take things to far, Eris stops him immediately and swiftly kicks him to the ground. Immediatly, he reflects on his actions and feels shame at himself for hurting someone he cares about because he couldn't control himself. He resolves himself to apologize immediately. Eris, who does have a crush on him by this point, decides to forgive him, but tells him to wait 5 years before trying to do anything like that. After she leaves, he says, "Thank god I didn't do something worse.' THAT is the attitude of someone who is remorseful and is striving to be a better person. Your idea of a good and bad people is also just frustratingly vague, 'good person' seems to just mean "someone whose actions align with my ideals and moral standards, with 'bad person' meaning the opposite. So you're point about a good way to write bad characters doesn't tell me much about where the line is, since your example is one with very similar "justifications" as a similar situation in Mushoku Tensel (above). MT is shows flawed people, who sometimes do things that makes your skin crawl, and then shows you that they are still humans and can be good people. Anyone is capable of change, for better or worse, that's the point. A person can still become a good person even without receiving what one might consider adequate external punishment for the past actions. Its dirty, sure, but its realistic. Rudy does become a good person over time, though I don't he'd ever consider himself as such, since no one hates his past self more than he does! Its the people around him that see how he has matured who decide to accept/forgive him in spite of all his serious flaws, because he chooses to keep walking forward, to improve himself and the lives of those around him with every step. If you can't stomach that rough journey, then you don't have to read or watch it, but don't dismiss its purposeful writing on a false premise that its just fanservice, pedobait, edgy, or whatever else you might label it, just because seeing certain scenes played out in such detail disgusts you. Okay, I think Ive said all I wanted to say. I know I had a lot to say, but I still found the video quite entertaining regardless!

Really good and thoughtful analysis. Though some of the things in the show and LN still leaves me questioning if it's necessary to include. Especially what he does to Eris in episode 6, does this scene really add something that we didn't already know, or should it be interpreted as "comedic", I'd like your opinion on this. Also this next one (Slight spoiler for LN18) where Rudy thinks to himself "if only she wasn't my sister, then I might be tempted" about Aisha, kinda insinuating it's the incest part that's the problem not the fact that she's 12, though I might be misreading it completely.

rudeus chosing not grape a kid and instead SA her to then be stopped by said child and apologize doesnt make him a good person or stops him from being a groomer its the exact opposite him being remorseful doesnt undo the act he SA'd her and in the latest episodes we see him j*rk off in a barel to eris who is like 12 and another child who is even younger and he goes all the way sleeping with eris when she is like 15 rudeus is not a good person he is a pedophile doing a couple good things on his life will not change that, even later on he marries roxy who looks like she is 14-15 (despite being the "300 year old loli" trope) we see that his "tastes" have not changed he just got married to 3 wifes 2 of whom he groomed and did nothing to redeem himself, its not words that make you a good person its actions of wich rudeus barely has any that are good in comparison to his bad ones

@@Krowsn In ep6, the scene shows the worst parts of Rudeus when he given the opportunity to act on his more fucked up sexual desires. You are meant to be disgusted, but since its from Rudeus' perspective, and he doesn't have good self awareness in that moment, he doesn't see just how deplorable his actions are, and so the seen takes on a comedic tone. Since Eris herself isn't mature either, and she has grown up in a less than savory household which uses their maids for sexual pleasure on a regular basis, she takes the whole situation a lot less seriously than it actually is. Rudeus is lucky she isn't traumatized by the whole scenario. As for its greater purpose, it's to directly contrast a similar setup in ep7, where he ends up stopping himself from touching Eris while she is sleeping next to him after he starts seeing her as a person, rather than an NPC love interest in an Eroge game. Rudeus is NOT as mature as people seem to assume he must be based on his age. People can get older without actually *growing up*. By LN18 Im pretty sure Aisha is older than 12, however, this has been a consistent hang-up of his, where Aisha had it basically beat into her head by her mother (Lilia), that she must serve Rudeus just like she served Paul, with all the messed up implications that might imply. At first, Aisha doubtd everything her mom said about how great Rudeus is, but once she meets him and he saves her and her mom from Pax with little issue, she starts believing every word. As a result she develops a sort of complex about her brother, it's weird, no denying that, but it isn't because she is actually romantically interested, its more of a habitual behavior to sexualize herself like her mother taught her. I believe only realizes what she is doing is not what she really wants around VOL20, and discusses the subject with Rudy a bit. When Rudeus makes weird statements like "If only she wasn't my sister" its not because he actually has any intention of making a move on her, its merely a thought in his head resulting from her constant clingyness and the often flirtatous behavior she does towards him on a regular basis. So he thinks that if a girl who wasn't his sister acted this way towards him, he probably would fall for them. As for the age thing, I don't think he is really thinking that part through, as he just thinks her body is inherently attractive. It is weird, but also not pedophilic, since what he finds attractive about her isn't really related to her being a child. Ofc, if he did make a move, this would not hold up as an argument lol. Im just saying that the thought is not a crime in and of itself. Kinda a long winded answer ik, but I wanted to be specific. Hope you have time to read it. (I didn't reread it yet so there might be some confusing sentences I missed)

@@doodlegame8704 The comparison to ep 7 definitely makes sense. By LN 18 Rudy is roughly 18 so that makes Aisha 12-13, but it doesn't really matter. I can see the constant "pushing" from Aisha could result in an "intrusive thought" from Rudy but if I remember correctly he does have some similar thoughts from time to time. Obviously there's no real harm done by that, but I feel like it would've been really nice to see more changes for the better through thoughts like this after the development he has after Paul's death and especially turning point 4. Finally, someone with some common sense! So you do exist somewhere out there! While watching both SDS and Mushoku, I thought there was something wrong with me, because I couldn't buy into the hype - I couldn't see the "brilliance" of these series, I couldn't see their "awesomeness", their "originality", their PEAK!!!! And all this, because I was too busy being disgusted with Meliodas molesting Elisabeth, Ban getting a being that looked like a 10yo child pregnant and King Groomer raising his future wife since infancy. And of course, there's Mushoku - how is this peak isakai? How is this the best? Dude is basically a 40+yo who is given all the tools necessary for taking revenge on his previous failure of a life where he got bullied for not hitting the gym and going to therapy. Since the first episode, I thought the story was fuc*ed since the guy has his previous conscience after getting reborn and was perfectly aware what was happening when Zenith was breastfeeding him. The fact that he kept Roxy's underwear to pray and worship is beyond messed up, and then there was the ED he got after fuc*ing his, 14yo at the time, cousin. The absolute cherry on the dog turd was an entire season of him trying to cure his ED, molesting dog-girl-chan and cat-girl-chan, and finding that the cure was fuc*ing his childhood friend. I feel Mushoku would have been digestible if it were just a fantasy - the fact that it's an isekai ruins it completely. Maybe I'm too old for anime right now. Maybe teen me would have found these series fun. If so, teen me needed a shrink.

The way in which you write a flawed character is by writing their flaws and wrongdoings in a way of which deepens the character and furthers the plot in order to feel as if it was necessary to the story as well as to not justify their wrongful actions. A show that does this well is "It's always sunny in Philidelphia". They do shitty things and commonly in media, we're inclined to view the main character as moral or the good guy but because they are evidently so flawed and malicious, it makes it so that whenever Charlie says a homophobic slur or when Mac was a closeted transphobe, we knew not to root for that because they are already bad people. But in order to potray a flawed character in media, you cannot glorify what they do unless it evidently (non diegetically) condemns their wrongdoings. For example, a story where the Charismatic, charming, attractive Mc, in secret, is a sadistic serial killer and the writing condemns their actions through the reactions of their victims e.g: the victims weep in dreadful anticipation, begging, throwing away shame whilst doing so, praying they see mercy as snot and tears run down their face. Because the victims are sympathetic, the Mc is evidently in the wrong no matter how charismatic and likeable and a message is conveyed.

Yeah, it’s more about the way a story handles the characters and contextualises their actions than the actual character itself. I was on the fence with s1 mushoku, as in general I felt although rudeus was a piece of crap, the show new that, and his disgusting actions had serious consequences but man, I didn’t feel good watch season 2. Also felt like the show was objectifying the female characters more and more towards, making their character centre around rudeus without much else. Still enjoyed bits of season 2 but was left pretty unhappy by it, and I’m guessing it’s only getting worse right :/
