I think the reason why Anime is so pervasive with German imagery is that the Germans POWs from WW1 stayed in Japan. Thus the influence of Prussian Armies and the fact that Japan was heavily influenced by Europeans during the Meiji Restoration made them compatible with Imagery. Another aspect is that Japan HEAVILY lacks the context and impact of fascist regimes like the N*zis. And thus they focus on imagery without realizing the messed up context.
@tylersmith31398 ай бұрын
It's pervasive with WW2 German imagery, not WW1 and there weren't many German POWs in Japan in WW1. There was barely a German military presence in the Pacific and they were easily overrun. The German imagery in anime outside of Attack on Titans is clearly Nazi imagery and it stems from Mangakas who were fans of Fascist Japan idolizing other fascist states like Nazi Germany. Attack on Titan is blatantly fascist. War is portrayed as inevitable and life is portrayed as either destroying all your enemies or they will destroy you. The whole world irrationally hates Eldians, wants them dead and they can't be reasoned with and the only way to stop them is to kill all of them. Oh and the good guys who stop Eren from completing his genocide are proven wrong in the end when 2-3 generations after them, Eldia gets blown up. Not to mention, little things like Paradis Island flourishing in the Epilogue(under a Yeagerist/fascist ethnocentric Autocratic monarchist government similar to WW2 Japan), the entire political system of Paradis Island and how only individual actors are scrutinized, but never the actual militaristic, fascistic system of Paradis that leads to a few aristocrats taking power because apparently, autocracy becomes ok if it's a single monarch and military running the country instead of a bunch of oligarchs)

The term forced diversity has the same energy " you got this job/acceptance because you are black" despite the fact that affirmative action had a extremely high hurdle to overcome, it just forced colleges to accept a non-legacy student and allowed them to factor poorer backgrounds(as alot of poc majority schools often lack ap classes, not due poc intelligence but because pocs,from a statistical standpoint, tend to live in neighborhoods where rent is the majority way to pay a house,so schools tend to not have the high property tax fund for ap) while twisting jobs arms to actually for different kings of qualified employees(best example of this was when california killed AA for contract jobs. The before showed businesses were willing to give qualified non-white contractors of 17 years a chance. But the second they were given to just use"jimmy bob the contractor of 17 years" they did. 11:36 attack on titan has "three sides" the marley, the eldian and the facist yeagerist. Yes the yeagerists are facists. The manga hints that. That african character doesn't say the word fascist but he says, "I can not support a xenophobic group like you" you have to remember the idealogy of fascism doesn't exist there because the 2nd world war or the first world war has not happened there. The manga shows how a group of xenophobic, ultranationalists can become blind, commits genocide and destroy the country. The manga clearly takes the side of antifascism. Marley and paradis uniting to stop a xenophobic mass mudurer eren. It has always taken the side of antifascism. By supporting paradis, marley or anyone oposing the fascist. But I don't get the impression that Isayama or the story is trying to equate these two very different peoples. Likewise, there could be connections between Paradis and Japan made with having a brutal past and some people wanting to move past that but in the show those who subscribe to the Eldian nationalism (Yaegerists) are portrayed as the villains while the protagonists (Scouts) choose to protect the rest of the world.

@datguy3581 Жыл бұрын
@@Peasham Eldia is not just some tiny island nation. They enslaved a large part of the world for centuries. That’s why they are hated or feared throughout the world. And Marleyan propaganda as well as Marley’s own use of Eldians as slave soldier validates that fear. There’s also the fact that Paradis island has been unable to form diplomatic ties with any nation. The whole point of the story is that they are not justified. The genocide is not justified. The massacre in Liberio is not justified. Anytime the harming of civilians is depicted, it is not justified. There are characters who try to justify said action are the villains of the story. Eren betrays his friends, his cause, and his country. He abuses Mikasa and Armin. He commits acts of domestic terrorism against his own people and his enemies. In the show/manga, the Rumbling plan which was supposed to be enacted by the Eldian military would be a show of force to make way for negotiations. They were going to hit only naval targets and military personnel. The idea would be that it’s brought about peace with minimal bloodshed. The point of Eren’s character is that he has always been a bad guy. He was always violent even when he was a child. He thinks that harming those he believes are standing in the way of his freedom is justified. But it’s not. The show makes a point that all of the main Eldian characters (aside from Floch who goes on a total power trip) oppose him. Even Pixis who is a relatively patriotic individual is against him. Hange denounced Eren’s genocidal plan citing how much they’ve learned about the outside world. They’ve met many good people outside the walls and many of the people who do bad things outside the walls were misinformed by an authoritarian regime. Onyonkapone’s speech and character in general embody a lot of the themes and messages that AOT embodies. He along with many other foreign volunteers sought to liberate their homelands from Marley’s rule but they also genuinely wanted to help the people of Paradis island. They sacrificed everything for people they didn’t know. But still they were turned on by some individuals in Eldia. Those soldier (the Yeagerists) are depicted as somewhat sympathetic because they are afraid and they think aq they are protecting their island. But the show pretty clearly depicts them as in the wrong because they are selfishly putting their own people above millions of innocents. Some of the people who were killed in the Rumbling did contribute to the conflict. Many of the Marleyans did take part in the war effort which systematically killed the people of Paradis. for a century. They have blood on their hands. That’s how many Yeagerists justify their actions. Liberio hosted much of Marley’s military and the people who supported them. The anime made the decision to pair the flashback of the representatives of Eldia meeting Ramzi and his people next to the beginning of the Rumbling. The refugees in that camp were just like the Eldians in that they had lost their homes to war but they still were willing to reach out to outsiders and shared what little they had with the Eldians. That’s the type of people the Rumbling would destroy. Attack on Titan is fundamentally a cautionary tale of ultranationalism gone too far. It’s a story about people who are so scared that they look the other way as atrocities are committed because those atrocities benefit them. But in the end, everyone suffers. While Eldia does take some influence from Japan, it also takes influence from many other countries and should not be seen as a stand in for Japan. That is not the intention of the author and is not supported by the core anti fascist themes and messages of the show.
@Peasham Жыл бұрын
@@datguy3581 That's a cute reading of the situation, none of which counters the fact that the updated ending of the story proves genocide is the only way to protect the tiny island nation alongside the people being genocided being completely okay with it. When you write a story wherein the only option for your protagonists and the safety of their nation is genocide, and then specifically write in scenes both proving that was the only option with scenes of the people genocided accepting their genocide, you are making Japanese ultranationalist propaganda.

"What is the problem with a character being a different race than the source material?" Simple, we like the source, do not change it we like it how it is we are attached to the character as it is and we do not like people changing them for arbitrary political reasons.

@@Peasham What source material is Fate based on that they changed? Fate has a whole multiverse bullshit going on so there is in fact a male Miyamoto Musashi in fate as well that is from our wold. And thirdly what political reason was that done for? Like I said people hate when you take a character they are attached to, and change him. You are arguing in bad faith as your example doesnt fit what what I said whatsoever. Its the same reason why people dont shit on miles moralles for being black, because he is a different character from peter parker from an alternate universe or whatever bullshit marvel is using now. Just dont take an ALREADY ESTABLISHED character and change him. Dont make a historical drama and gender and race swap characters. If you want to make a parody where stalin is a woman you can romance go at it bud i couldn't care less. But if you want to make a documentary about ww2 then i expect stalin to look like his fucking portrait.

@@thrax1831 All Fate media spun off from Fate Stay/Night, an adult visual novel whose main cast contained Saber, a female who is explained to be the real king Arthur, whose true gender was hidden from writings due to immense sexism, this being a focal point of the story and her development as a character. Furthermore, not only is king Arthur obviously a fictional character, Miyamoto Musashi basically is, as a good chunk if not most of his life had always historically been mythologized. They have, as you've said, taken already established characters well known for their identities and swapped their immutable characteristics exclusively to spread the author's political agenda. Sounds like grounds for outrage to me. Also, to even imply that people don't whinge incessantly about Miles because he's black is hilarious, to state it outright is embarrassing.

@@Peasham Well I dont see people winge about miles because he is black, but because marvel is trash. And again you are ignoring all my arguments and spinning your own little story. Lets simplify it for you. People get outraged when you: - race/gender swap a character in a historical drama - race/gender swap a beloved character from some beloved IP King Arthur in this instance that you mention is not a specific character from another IP. Like what part of "established ip" do you not understand? Nor is it trying to portray a historical figure in a historical context. Again, King Arthur is not a character from an established IP people love. It's a public domain character basically, and there are more takes on king arthur than you can probably count. People aren't attached to King Arthur as a concept but a specific rendition of him from a specific IP, and if you were to reboot the IP they like and gender/race swap him people would go ballistic. But making a parallel world with different takes on some characters that is for all intents and purposes a blank slate was always allowed.

Also radical feminists with persecution complex's like to place themselves above men and even use left racism to demonised straight white men so typical gamergate stuff. At the same time they'll equally denounce transgender people (mainly MtF) and sometimes gay men. So the idea of left and right being a black and white concept or a spectrum can't happen because those terms are concepts that are purely cultural, historical and based on beliefs.... a lengthy definition of political if accounting the historical part as crime. Anime itself is generally not political to have LGBT themes is irrelevant because what is considered ok Japan may not be ok in the west. I'm not saying Anime can't be left or right its just the video itself is aimed towards toxic minorities in fandoms, hate groups and Japanese history which accounts to nothing when talking about Anime.

You don’t get to draw the line where it benefits you. There's often times quite a big difference. Ethnic minority groups rarely get to see themselves in good roles, it's often times they're the oppressed class, and even when they are in a good role, it's as a doctor or sports player or cop or politician, roles that are likely unattainable for them, unrepresentative of them, and often times institutions that they grow up hating. Race swapping to make a character white instead of black more often than not had/has racist incentives behind it, and if it doesn't, it accidentally reproduces racism largely bcs of this part of the character being removed. Yes, their skin colour shouldn't matter but bcs of centuries of racism that is still perpetuated today, it does, and we can't dance around the issue willy nilly. While creating new characters that represent ethnic minorities is a better idea, race swapping from x minority group to being white, is not equivalent to swapping from white to x minority group in any way.

As a K-On! pfp user on twitter, seeing the other side through this video was very funny to me. And I do talk about anime and politics in real life while showing my face. Seeing the facial reactions in real-time is priceless. As someone who's political beliefs have shifted over several years, I think the "pipeline" is misunderstood by people who aren't right wing (mainstream conservatives don't count). Ben Shapiro and PragerU content will not turn you into me (speaking as a former patron). The most effective content is very niche and decentralized. Having moved to the right, I feel like "SJW OWNED" type content actually hinders the pipeline, and mostly acts to placate ineffective conservatives who conserve nothing. Mainstream conservatism keeps you in the loop, only things outside of it draw you away from it.

Its absolutely saddening for whats happening to the mainstream rw sphere in the past decades. Shifting of overtone window and optic seeking. PragerU and the Daily Wire has absolutely poisoned the well with neo-con propaganda, liberal globalist bs that they have been pushing out. The watering down of actual right wing takes is just absolutely disgusting as well. The Judiac neo-cons have been encroaching for far too long and has severely damaged the views that we should being upholding. Couldn’t agree more, it’s that type of “leftist OWNED with FACTS and LOGIC” content that encourages mainstream conservatives to content themselves with sitting on their asses and laughing at their enemies, pointing out how silly and hypocritical they are by saying things like “imagine if the situation were reversed!” and “leftists are the REAL racists!”. What they don’t realise is that their enemies know they’re hypocrites and simply don’t care because they’re literally just evil and lying/hypocrisy is an effective strategy. Rather than Judeo-gatekeepers like shapiro and prager, the most effective “right wing propaganda” is to simply observe the behaviour of leftists. It’ll make you right wing faster than anything else, providing you have a soul. As a side note, it’s a real whitepill to see this sort of thing discussed openly in the comments, especially given the kind of trash the original video is. I wouldn’t have imagined these sorts of based comments being mainstream 5-10 years ago.

A little extra context on the development in the general culture of anime these days I think maybe looking at the current culture presented by Webnovels from not just Japan but also China and Korea. These days a lot of the most popular narratives in the field come from there and mix and match between genuine creative efforts in and clear propaganda. A lot of them present simplified worlds with simplified moral construction in order to create self insert fantasies of all sort of teenage frustrations. (in essence fascist crack) Want to be a justified bastard to everyone? good the world is bad and everyone is evil, so the protagonist being evil is just him fighting back... The more nuanced and thoughtful out of these fall by the wayside as "slow" or "confusing". Characters that are self-aware and have moral integrity that isn't just thinly disguised condescension and self justification, are called whiny and boring. Meanwhile they present absolutely delusional fascist worldviews as reasonable and self evident. A lot of this stuff is free and easy to find, creating sort of endless narratives that basically just facilitate the sort of "slap back porn" developmentally stunted egotistical people are primed to get addicted to. Your favorite show is only 20 epidsodes and you need to wait a year for more. Here are 3000 chapters of a book with updates every day. and its free. Anyway this stuff fills the need for power-fantasy, but also is set up to produce anxiety as soon as the situation isn't immediately clear. essencially making you addicted to the dopamine of selfjustified violence, while making twist as traumatic as possible (for engagment) leading to regular sane stories make you anxious and still disappoint. I think there are some clear signs of an effort to reprogram the the sort of terminally online neet culture that is so vulnerable to the sort of political theories that would never survive contact with reality. anyway its an interesting field to look at maybe, and sort of relevant since we are getting more and more anime coming from that field. A place where people can live in a delusional dream reality that never ends, preventing all danger of even accidentally touching grass. all in a neat format that even the cheapest worst internet connection should be able to handle with ease. Then there are also live service style subscription versions to not just brainrot bored nerds but also milk the rich or vulnerable ones. anyway. its a fun world. and I didn't even get into the ones targeted at women. I think there are probably worthwhile elements here that are worth protecting. such as the democratic publishing model (services such as royal road and so on have that I think) but there is some dark shit. its messy and confusing and but i think it could benefit from analysis.
@geschnitztekiste41119 ай бұрын
The only valid fascist in anime is Strohheim from JoJo, who is just so absurd on a conceptual level that you kinda have to admire him. Like, a screaming cyborg N@zi who never turns good or anything, but still helps out the protagonists because the main villains are an even bigger threat than even the N@zis, essentially becoming an ally by accident. Just the balls to write this, man. And this comes from one of the most progressive animanga series out there, where themes like oppression through governments, hospitals and the police are pretty commonly criticized and where like most other characters are pretty androgynous, qeercoded, or just confirmed to be queer. So yeah, he's meant as a joke, but his role still plays with expectations in a fun way.
