Something unexplained in the anime is that the Teleportation incident teleported anything living. It also destroyed a lot of the affected area. So not only people, other races, even MONSTERS were getting randomly teleported (with a chance of being instantly killed by or killed shortly after the warp), there's also a lot of destruction to those areas before deterioration from abandonment even happened. Also, imagine something like a vicious monster or a tree randomly ending up in your house.... Or someone getting teleported into solid ground....
