I feel like one of the major things holding modern anime back is they don't seem to have an ending. They're all adaptations of ongoing manga/light novels/etc so their endings are usually something along the lines of "stay tuned for season 2" or "read the manga to know what happens." Older shows like Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop were so impactful because they told a whole story - their endings have a sense of finality to them, and their protagonists experience an entire character arc throughout the show.
@heinrichagrippa56815 жыл бұрын
I think that sort of varies. Most anime are manga or lightnovel adaptations, and only a few actually manage to cover the entirety of the story they're based on, whereas anime originals are much more likely to be complete since the stories are usually designed around a set number of episodes from the outset. I'm pretty sure it's been this way for decades, but the inconclusive adaptations are mostly forgotten, while anime originals and more complete adaptations (that are also good) are remembered as classics. I suspect It's similar to how the '60s are considered a golden age of classic rock, but if you were to go back in time, you'd find the top 40 music was actually filled with garbage that no one even remembers anymore.

That is why some of the best anime ever made are originals. Not based on a story from some other medium (Manga, LN, VN ect ect)
@Hyperversum35 жыл бұрын
This is a standard tho. Adaptations, apart from rare (Monogatari series) or specific situations (HxH) are not on par with the original, because they are that, adaptations. Their original medium Is another one and they were written for that medium. I never got the hype for Fate Zero/UBW as animes. They are good, but they aren't 10/10 or whatever. The novels, on the other hand, are superb. The issue Is that when you change the format/the medium something gets lost. Stay Night in particular suffers from this. It's a big epic, built by 3 different stories which show differenti result and themes starting from the same characters and ideas. They are NOT different series or products. Reading/watching UBW before reading/watching Fate it's like reading The Two Towers before The Fellowship of The Ring. You complitely fuck up the internal order and you lose entire backgrounds and events that were needed to understand UBW. So, it's UBW a classical anime? Mhh, I don't think so. It's Fate/Stay Night a classical novel? Yeah, It Is. It's one of the most famous and important visual novels. And if you didn't get It from how I am speaking of It, my favourite, together with Higurashi and Steins;Gate

I think you'd be surprised how many old anime "classics" weren't the most popular or most watched of their time, but instead grew more recognized or acclaimed by the wider viewership over time. I think that's the main problem with the thesis of this video, a "classic" won't necessarily be the most popular or watched when they come out.

In the contrary, it's crazy how a lot of animes that came out over the past few years and were exploding in popularity (e.g. SAO, SNK, madoka magica) got gradually forgotten and/or the hype completely died out.

There's a big thing on this topic that hasn't been mentioned by this video, or anyone here, and I find that sorta odd. Basically..... What did undeniable classics like Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, and Serial Experiments Lain all have in common? The kind of anime that stays with you when you saw them? ..... They're all anime originals. Hell lets add more modern ones like Gurren Lagann, Last Exile, Texhnolyze, Code Geass, and Magika Modoka while we're at it. Ghost In The Shell can get away with this too because its source material and Stand Alone Complex are basically two very different universes. Virtually all modern anime today are basically manga and light novel adaptions, die-hard fans know exactly how the story progresses so there's a sizable disconnect between audiences that read the source material and the anime-onlys. Which hampers an anime's staying power the way I see it. Anime originals completely negate that issue and if they're great, everyone watching is equally invested on an episode to episode basis. That's besides the fact there's more new anime that has been coming out *_every single fucking year than there was IN THE ENTIRE DECADE OF THE 1990's._* Oversaturation is real and that's modern anime's biggest obstacle. We could have the next Neon Genesis Evangelion that changes anime for the better but it would hardly matter if people can't tell it apart from the hundreds of other recent anime that are on everyone's backlogs.
@Selfhigh5Tv5 жыл бұрын
The current climate for the last decade supports a deluge of LN/VN/Manga adaptations to support a few 'originals' every year or so. It's all about money/opportunity cost and guaranteed sales vs risk on a new property that doesn't sell. "shrugs" It is what it is. The hardest thing/most expensive thing to do is be creative. So they put all there money in adapting other peoples work because it is more cost efficient and requires less if any at all creativity to do.

I'd argue Kill la Kill fits the bill. It's almost universally regarded as a great work and isn't based on a manga, though we'll see if it's as strong in 15-20 years as Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop are now.

Completely agree. I was never that big of an anime fan, but I wanted to give up the medium entirely when I realized that most of it is just one big ad to sell the manga, or visual novel, or whatever else is the source material. This was back when Re:Zero finished airing. Ironicly, what restored my interest is AoT S3 Part 2, it showed me there are still fantastic shows coming out that will have some sort of closure and are focused on actually delivering a great story rather than being an advert for a great story but in a different format.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is my favorite work of fiction about an interstellar war ever. I loved it despite a few factors that worked against it, like: the many German character names and the seemingly hundreds of characters were not easy to remember at first, it was more character and less action driven that I was expecting from a "space war" anime, and the classical music score (nice of you to do the same by the way) was not what I was expecting. That said, it still managed to break a large number of my expectations...like there were genuinely good and bad people on both sides of the war. It's way easier to tell a story with a clear bad guy, even if you get people to root for the bad guy...and here the antagonist wasn't as bad as I might expect. It's also rare to see so many background characters get their own arcs so that you can see the effects of the war from so many different perspectives.
@Iskelderon Жыл бұрын
In a setting that's built on top of "WW2 allies fight the Prussian Empire in space", it's kinda to be expected to encounter plenty of German names.
@realityisascam Жыл бұрын
German names are actually a + and yeah it's a very character driven anime. Some idiots nowdays claim the character writing is shoddy because all they can appreciate is over the top anime and the deepest characterwork they've ever encountered is Dostoevsky

Or at least, I think Runescape is a better MMO than most and its combat is certainly nothing flashy, even though I think it’s pretty good in its own simple way. In a similar vein Black Desert Online is often praised for its combat but it just doesn’t do it for me, even though you can own land, furnish houses, fish etc kinda like Runescape it just lacks that charm and longevity.

I mean that was something classics didn't have to compete with: These days you can learn of things INSTANTLY, FROM ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. Classic anime had a local community. Internet was primitive, websites for streaming barely existed, so word of mouth or a community board on a website was the only way to get the word out. These days you are likely to see an anime in: memes references pictures before you even see said anime. Alot of people today are comparing the "dance" in Ending Theme of episode 6 of "Kenja no Majo" to the Chika Dance of "Love is War". It's a changing time.

I think the biggest factor is the way current anime is released/consumed by the community. Before the only series that got released outside of Japan (whether via official licensors or fansubbers) were ones that were already extremely hyped up and successful in Japan, think your Cowboy Bebops, Evangelions, and Death Notes. So this created a situation where we were getting less, which made everything we did get more significant, and there was also a selection bias because so much of what we did get was really good. Obviously nostalgia can play a huge factor in this as well. Today, however, with simulcasts, we have near immediate access to what is available in Japan, both the good and the bad. Without licensors and fansubbers serving as “tastemakers,” the fandom has to sift through everything to find the hot shit. But really the biggest impact of anime distribution of today is that there is a never ending flow of it. And as a result of social media and people always wanting to be on the cutting edge and part of the hip conversations, anime fans are always moving on to the next “big thing.” In summary, I think we do have a lot of good modern shows, but the constant influx of new shows of varying quality, lessens the impact of the arguable “classics” of our time.

I just think it's too early to think about classics of the past few years yet. For example, I would be very surprised if Mob Psycho 100 and Made in Abyss aren't considered a classic in years to come. It doesn't matter if they're not finished. That doesn't stop us from considering stuff like Spice & Wolf a classic. You do make some good points about how dense the anime world is becoming so it gets harder and harder to watch stuff from the past and keep up. Movies and books are like that too. Anime is joining them now.

For those who don't know: he tweeted that he might rescind what he said about the death of classic animes if SnK (Attack on Titans) managed to keep the same quality that Season 3 has brought. It is only fair to rate AoT upon re-watching the entire series. Season 1 and Season 2 were criticized for character writing and generic plot, but many of these faults are explained in season 3, and based on the manga, season 4. Everything comes together in full circle now, so I'm willing to overlook the faults in S1 + 2 if these faults are actually deliberate on the author's part to express his message and explore the theme. Since the show has not concluded, it remains to be seen whether or not it will become a classic, but as he said, it has all the potential to become one.

Stock Characters and tropes exist for a reason, and thats because they are effective. Hayao Miyazaki has criticized the modern anime industry as being overly dominated by otaku culture. And to an extent I agree. The imperative to create underage female characters that appeal to fanboys who want to collect as much of their "waifu's" merch has taken over much of the industry's attention. There's some really good shows these days, but SO much of the anime industry is preoccupied in churning out hollow content trying to appeal to the trashiest aspects of otaku culture. And nearly all modern anime have an almost entirely high school age cast. It didn't used to be that way in the past. Having a cast of diverse ages and backgrounds I think can add so much to a story, and help a show connect with a broader demographic.

because it fulfills the most important criteria- being relevant to anyone and everyone. Like it is something that we all take for granted since every genre is so well defined and mature nowadays we rarely get a "classic" which is but a show that is not bound by any single genre AND the fact that the story it tells is being told from scratch and it has been done so well throughout. AOT has it all, the hype, the depression, the plot depth and epic character development, it could very well be our generation's evangelion. Being relevant for ages requires something different and ingenious. You're immersed in the story the moment you first lay eyes on it, keep advancing through the plot and when you see anything else released in the same decade, its only then you realize that "Wow, I'm surprised no one else has thought of this before!".

I'd argue that Made In Abyss despite it seemingly being unfinished (manga is still ongoing and farther ahead than where first season ended) has the potential to be considered a classic at some point if not already even if it is left as is. If they can continue to adapt from Made In Abyss' manga as well as they did for season 1 it will no doubt be a classic when it's finished. There are others I'd say have a chance at classicdom but Made In Abyss is the best example I can think of. Made In Abyss' world brought on the largest sense of pure almost childlike curiosity that no other literary world in any medium other than maybe 1984. Throw in a small but entertaining cast that at least for me still comes up in more than a few conversations and for more than a few reasons. It's story is endearing and enjoyable for (this is purely my opinion but still supports the argument it has that classic potential) 100% of it's runtime. While the only mark for becoming a classic that I can see is that as a whole it doesn't have any aspects that are new or unique to it, it isn't redefining anything genre or otherwise and the last reason is more aimed at shows that have been around for at least 10 years or so it doesn't apply yet but is also in my eyes one of the top reasons something becomes a classic and that is notable influence to the genre or anime at large, and sense this hasn't been around as long as JoJo or EVA it hasn't had the chance to prove it's influence.

9:30 beautifully said: classics exist because we feel the need to look back. When anime as a genre used to more of a scarcity, well compared to today, due to lack of supply and accessibility, people look back at those good ones. It's the same with movies, to arguably lesser but noticeable extent. "Over-saturation" of shows today is def a good thing on the market and consumers, but it does make the competition more harsh and pressures companies to put revenue above everything else first (RIP Studio Ghibli). The next time we start to have classics might (and hopefully not) be when anime industry starts to fade away from general consumption. I hope that day never comes, and I hope new classics may still arise even in today's saturated market.

Well, its hard, if not impossible to outdo it i'd say, especially the movie, the levels of badassery there (especially in the last fight) are so high nothing ever came close to it before or after until now, i'm losing hope anything ever will (even opm last fight was like 5/10 compared to that, if not lower). Although there are some anime that can compete in how good they are overall, and not that specific scene, say Trigun, maybe Hellsing, and probably some others i can't name straight up.

The growing trend of seasonal anime is the prime reason for it. Now, hardly any anime comes out which has a complete story without any sequel/seasons. Can you seriously think an anime like Monster would come out in these coming years? You'd need the Dragon Balls to make that happen.

Exactly. In current anime climate it’s almost impossible to make a full adaptation of a manga, especially one that’s not popular.

Honestly, probably the closest we have to a modern "classic" is JoJo. It has had such a huge prevalence across not just the anime community but across even general audiences in memes and general cultural influence. It has consistently been of very good to outstanding quality and, Part 5 in the states at least, was hugely popular almost off the bat. I get that it might "count less" per se because the manga came out decades ago, but in terms of the 2012-present anime, I think it would fit the definition of a "modern classic".
@grey61834 жыл бұрын
I mean true, but Araki is too smart to try and explore themes that would alienate people. Part 7-8 deal with a lot more of heavy stuff, but it’s still a simpler enjoyable series at heart.

I can’t stand the “gayness” of JoJo. It’s too much for me. Half naked men with girly cloths, stripper names, poses, female faces and haircuts. Also licking, kissing and god knows what they do to each other. Art style and animation is quite impressive though. But Nope! That’s not a classic but will be remembered for the memes. 😂

I believe the reason classics have died is also because the anime fanbase has grown, and a sizeable mainstream has formed. Most shows also cater to this mainstream audience, which means that alot of shows are being made that capture a big portion of the fanbases attention to shows that cant stick to memory because a similar show comes along every season. So staying power and popularity are becoming increasingly harder for a show to achieve. Which is why I think the most important factor is your last point, "The feeling of nothing quite like it existing". Which I still think happens today as well. Take Rakugo from 2016 for example. I dont think anything quite like it exists, and its an excellent anime. Golden Kamuy is another example, even if I am not that qualitatively impressed by it like with Rakugo, I do think it has a incredibly unique vibe to it.

Never heard of Rakugo. Golden Kamy? Did not reach the needed quality imho. And it is not finished either. Which btw is the main aspect why it is so hard to create a classic in today's anime industrie. Most anime series are just infomercials for their source material. People never expect for Index or Konusuba. not even for OPM to ever see the end of the story. Having one season as free sampler on TV and afterwards switching the medium to manga or light novels has become the norm. You can not build a classic on such a weak foundation. No Game no Life Zero has the chance to become a classic anime. No Game No Life itself? The chances are rather slim. because we never will see the end of it. The serialization has to go on until all steam is out of the franchise. And as the manga or LN will die long before it's anime advertising, they will just stop with the anime long before we even getting close to an end. The only exception are those big shoenen stories like Naruto and even with those we have an example in bleach how they will die together with their source material. Even with those we are no guarantee for closure.

Their are no more classics because: 1. Emphasis on quantity over quality (it makes more sense financially because we still eat it up) 2. The lesson we learned in the first Incredibles: If everyone is special/super, no one is. Despite the first point, their are more really good shows airing simultaneously so everything has a hard time standing out. Most of the classics had their own dominating period and didn't have to compete with one another.

"Gigguk said he went back to watch some classic anime in the midst of all the anime he's been watching lately. The classics not only stand out for its time but if you were to take a classic from history and throw it into a modern season then (story-wise) it would still stand out. So saying that there are just too many anime nowadays to stand out isn't a good argument. From Psyko"

Made in Abyss is very good but I don't think it can get a Classic Status later on
@MagicalGirlUsagi5 жыл бұрын
As stated by Gigguk in his video, its the incomplete nature of a lot of shows that hold them back from getting that classic recognition. Even if Made in Abyss does get another season, it would have been a long time since the 1st season. And sure, there is a a manga you can read, or you can just cross your fingers and be patient, however that sort of thing is a turn off for the average consumer. A lot of classics, like Spirited Away or Ghost in the Shell, are considered so good they are even watched by people outside of the niche that is the anime community. So its not just what makes a great or an amazing show, as even I agree Made in Abyss was an amazing series, full of beautiful visuals, amazing storytelling and an amazing soundtrack; what average consumer is going to pick up an incomplete show?
